Elusive Schrades

Paul that Knife you just showed- is the same size of your Case Peanut or slightly bigger- that's a very nice smaller Knife!

Thanks Duncan. It's 3". I think the peanut is about the same length, but the cut co blades are ground so much more thin behind the edge it's like comparing an xacto knife to a hatchet. The peanut in question was a current one of course. The cut looks more like a peanut to me with the color and texture of the bone anyways.

Charlie and Paul, this one's not mine, it was on Ebay a while back. I would have gone for it but as usual I was too broke at the time. I liked it so much I saved a picture of it lol! It's about as unused as I've seen:

Beautiful knives Phil!!

Boy!!! Am I ever sorry I didn't see that one!!! Thanks for posting it, Eric!!

No problem Charlie! Yes, I'm filled with remorse as well!

Gorgeous Knife - Preemo Stag - it would have to be legit it looks too good as in the Stampings etc

Duncan, that is what I'm thinking also but it always scares me when I can find no information or other examples on a particular knife, this knife must have been a very small run. I'm thinking late 40's to early to mid 50's.

Thanks Duncan, about what I found, nothing on this pattern number with stag, wonder if Schrade ever did any uncataloged knives. The 97 part of the pattern number does correspond to other 4 blade congress knives just not 972.

Hey Augie- I figured you would have definitely seen this. With the numbers quoted under each reference for example Full Congress 9763 - do you actually see that 9763 stamped on the knife?
I could get out my Schrades - and look them up in the catalog- but that would mean digging lol.

Nope buddy, just 972 which I can find nothing on which makes it very suspect to me.

Hey Augie - sorry, my Grammar sucks my friend.

Ok...I see the stampings on your Knife, but lets take for instance the Congress I quoted from the Schrade Catalog - lets pick out the Ful Congress that has the number quoted underneath the description in the catalog....NO.9763...

So the above quoted Congress once in your hand in real life would actually have that number that they quoted in the Catalog 9763 Stamped on the blade? OR .....?

Thank you Duncan for all your efforts, I just found out it is legit and very rare, an uncatalogued knife made in very few numbers. It will not appear in any reference we have. It is an absolutely stunning knife in hand, I sure wish we could see stag run all the way out to the bolsters like this knife has.

What I said. That knife is fine. Meanwhile, there is confusion here elsewise, as Schrade CutCo (pre-1947) did not put pattern numbers on their blades. The 972 is for stag, while 973 is for bone. We are talking Schrade Walden, here, not Schrade CutCo. The 972s probably went out in a trickle or maybe just a drip, not catalogued. There are other examples of this. The milled liners often only occurred in early runs of new patterns.

Thank you Cal for all your help on this knife, I really wish I had the detailed knowledge that some of you guys have.

We know that certain patterns first catalogued as Schrade Waldens in the year 1953 had a tang stamp which ended in N.Y., omitting the U.S.A. This was their regular stamp from early 1947 until the general time frame of 1953. Since the congress knife in question here had the U.S.A. in the tang stamp we can assume that it probably is younger than about 1953. Of course there is always the question of exactly when old stamps wore out and new ones implemented.

Cal or Augie; just for clarification, that beautiful Stag Congress is 3 1/2" long, correct??

tongueriver tongueriver
Augie Augie

Never mind!!
