Emergency Sheath Tutorial?

Tyrkon, glad you started this thread. Finally had a chace to try this.

This isn't pretty - but you can't beat cheap and easy -- and I can now pack my ASH-1 safely while i wait for a proper sheath. (I don't dare explain to my friends why my $400 knife is in a $2 sheath :D)

I used a scrap piece of PVC laying around, a heat gun and a rag to press it into shape. Wrapped it all with paracord and we're ready to rock! Function over form.

SplittinHairs: That looks perfectly functional. Excellent job. BTW: How long did the heat gun take to head up the plastic? Morimotom suggested it to me and I just might have to go grab one. )

Not long at all -- I had it on high for approx five minutes -- keeping it moving so nothing burned. After it was warm, it was easy to heat back up to make it pliable for final tweaks and fitting.

My heat gun is one of the $25 Wagners from Home Depot. Nothing fancy.

Perfect. Thanks. ;)

Slightly off topic.
On a whim, I tried a Scrap Yard "Sheath for 6" knives" on my CG ASH-1 and, lo and behold, it fits. They are in stock and, at $17.95 each (+ $8.95 S/H per order) they can make a relatively inexpensive home for your ASH. While they are not a sheath cleverly handmade with materials lying around the house/garage/shop, they will serve their purpose adequately until you make or order a better one.
NOTE: The SYK sheath that I now store my CG ASH-1 in was ordered last April and uses a velcro fastener for the pouch. Checking the SYK site, I see that they now use a quick-clip type buckle closure and they may have changed other things as well. While an upgrade of the nylon cloth used to make the sheath would be welcome, if they have changed the width of the sheath and its plastic insert, it might not fit the ASH-1 any longer. If you are considering this option, please call and check to make sure that they haven't changed that width. Pete/PIGmsayre

be carefull with PVC, do not inhale any smoldering from pvc pipe, it is poisonous and caustic. Dioxin and Hydrogen Chloride are both burning byproducts, one is a carcinogen and the other is highly corrosive.

Dang this thing is fugly. But it fits real snug. Blade retention. I'll try to get some standard PVC tomorrow so I can make it smoother as the sprinkler head hand some bumps and holes. At least I can carry it or throw it into my pack while I wait for a real sheath for it. ;)

But it works. :D

As I scrolled down to this pic, my first thought was FUGLY! So I had to laugh when I saw that is how you described it, too.

lol. :p:p

I cleaned it up a bit before wrapping it in para-cord. But not much. Still FUGLY. But it works and is snug. However, I need some real pants for this bad boy. :D

BTW: I am taking orders on "Sprinkler Head Sheaths"! Just $300.00 plus shipping and you too can have one of these. :D

Is there any wiggle room on the price? I kinda want one, but that's pretty expensive. That's like 3 Chuddy Bear danglers! Sprinkler heads ARE kinda expensive, though.

If you provide your own sprinkler head I'll knock off $50.00 !

Alright, this one should get some giggles. I think I am going to start a show called "Ghetto Craft". ;)

As I wait for some real pants for my ASH1 I decided to see what else, aside from a sprinkler head, that I could use to make a temp. sheath. So looking around the garage I saw an old weight lifting belt that I, to this day, have no idea how it ended up in my garage. Anyway, here is what I did.

I used para-cord to lash it together and it feels really secure. The ASH1 fits snug. But to make sure the blade does not slide out I added the Ghetto Craft bungi cord blade retainer thingy. :p

Anyway, I can't wait for some real pants to arrive. But this will work fine for now. Just toss it in my pack and go. I may add some loops/hoops for a belt but not sure.

thats great Tyrkon, you could really spank someone with that paddle!

Looks like pretty thick stock you started with too.
How long did it take you?

Well I had to stop several times to do other chores around the house but I'd say approx. 1 hour. Not very pretty but very functional. At least as a temp. I am hoping that one of our local sheath experts sees these pics and takes pity on me soon. :D
