Emerson Custom Count/Gallery/Glossary

Jackstraw:

Look in the Gallery at the very bottom. There you'll find several photos of the pre-tactical knives. Check out the very bottom one with the wire wrapping around the bolsters!

Great job John! I'm aware of all the work it took to get Ernie to get into the safe and pull out his early "first" knives. This is a big link of history that now has been completed! Thanks again!

We just knew that picture would get your attention.

It appears very close, but the color of the bolsters and the thumb stud appear to be off.

Not to let the cat out of the bag on the next update, but you have what Ernie used to refer to as a "Model A126".

Rhetorical question:

How would you like to own that set?

Sniper308

Actually, When I asked Ernie about his early knives, he volunteered to get us the pictures. He's a Hell of a guy and he's very supportive of the Forums and the Gallery in particular.

The delay in getting the pictures was my email address exploding.

John,
The color differential may be due to my less than expert digital photographic abilities. When I get home this evening I will check the new picture against the knife in question.

So I own a Model A126. Can't wait till the cat exits the bag.

Sniper,
Please add the following to the list:

CQC5, exactly the same as the other one I have. Specwar, single bevel, 2000, silver clip & thumb stud, green micarta

Viper 2 (I think) Smaller one of the 1 & 2.

Might as well take this opportunity to add a few pictures. I'm still waiting on some that have been promised, but wait until you see the ones I did get.

Sniper308 is the proud new owner of a stunning Dress Viper MV-1. Satin ATS34 blade, halfmoon logo, beautifully Anodized bolsters and liners, file worked pivot heads, Sterling Silver twisted wire wrapped Ivory scales and back spacer. Could it get any better?

Pic Pic Pic Pic

Until next time.

David

Ya know we're going to need a picture.

It's one we're missing.

John,
Pic of the Viper on it's way. Let me know if you need another knife next to it for size.

Yup MV-2

I met a guy at the drawing who had one as his daily carry knife. Ronald, remember him. He was the one standing next to us during the drawing. (Not the guy with the hat & CQC6.) He mentioned he had (4) other customs. I think one of them was a Halfmoon 6. I don't think he was a usual suspect or even came to this forum. Therefore his customs aren't reflected in our list. How many others like him are out there?

My MV-2 has:
Black G-10 scales
Silver pocket clip
Satin Blade Marked Specwar/2000
Silver Thumb Disc

The ones Ernie had were the same except, they didn't have pocket clips & had thumb studs instead of discs. I though that he no longer used studs. Unless, they were old blades which were already tapped for the stud instead of disc and were sitting around for final assembly. Hummm did I open up a new can of worms.

Any Viper experts out there?

David, I checked my Vipers and only my 3, the oldest of the bunch has a thumb stud.

I wonder if those are previously ground blades or a return to the thumb stud. Good catch.

I posted on the NYC show thread, but in case you missed it: I already own an all black custom CQC8 and five years ago placed an order for a CQC7 to match. That means black blade, no bolsters, all black micarta scales. To my surprise Ernest made two, so I bought both. One I will carry, the other goes in the safe. These are the only two ever made this way. I also have a custom fixed blade on order from five years ago and Ernest said I might get it by the Marh show in NYC. This knife will be a one of kind too, as it incorporates the blade from one style the handle from another and the blade will be 3 31/32 inches (legal).

If you haven't already done so, Email Sniper308 with the details.

I handled a "Blacked Out" CQC8 recently and I have to say I was VERY impressed. Black blade, liners, clip, screws, ect. Very bad looking. Your a lucky guy.

I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say I'd love to see pictures.

Email them to me and we'll get them up on the Gallery. If you don't have accecc to a digital or scanner or just need tips on "How to", just let me know.

Hey guys,

Don and I have given the Gallery a bit of a face lift.

We've added bold headers for categories like "Close Quarter Combat Series", "Viper Series", ect.

Also, you will notice "Known Variations". This is a result of Don's questionnaires that have covered the CQC5 and CQC6 series knives. More of these will follow for the other models. It gives you an interesting demographic of the variations out there and how yours compares.

We have three new pictures today.

David was kind enough to provide pictures of his new Viper MV-2 (the Bastard!). You'll notice that the MV-2 looks almost identical to the MV-1. The main difference being the overall size of the knife. Specifications can be found in the '92 Custom Catalog.

The third picture is pretty interesting. It shows a transition from a Classic CQC6 to the Full Dress CQC6/Viper to the Viper MV-4.

Many thanks to all that are contributing! Keep those pictures coming.

John

Part of the new face lift has been added. If you look at the bottom of the Gallery, you will see the latest pictures to be added to the gallery. Let's see how this feature works out. Let me know.

The new pictures are nothing short of spectacular, Thanks JZ! My eyes bugged out on these babies.

Keep the pictures coming! Again, if you don't have a digital camera or a scanner, email me. We can get it done.

Hey John,
You can add a Mirage to the list of fixed blades. I just got it today. This thing is sweet. I can't believe how it feels in my hand.

Rich

Congratulations! The Mirage is by far my personal favorite Emerson fixed blade. You have a keeper there.

Don "Sniper308" is the guy in charge of the numbers, but I'm sure he'll spot your posting. I'm just the picture guy.
smile.gif
Speaking of which, when you get a picture of two, be sure to shot be copies.

John

Its a beautiful Mirage...satin blade...only other ones I've seen are black ti. A keeper indeed.

Update

This weeks update took a little longer then usual. But the wait paid off.

Don sent in a great picture of the only example of a serrated CQC6 we have. Pretty rare bird. I had originally ordered my CQC6 with a serrated blade, but changed my order before it was delivered.

Probably should have left well enough alone.

Next up is for Mr. Pre-Tactical, aka Jackstraw. As was mentioned before, I was able to locate an actual Pre-Tactical catalog. Simple thing really, being only two Xeroxed sheets and a color photo, but it really sheds light on the Mike Walker influence in Ernie's work and what may be out there somewhere.

Another score was a simple sheet that I think may be the missing link for a couple of folks here. It's not what the sheet shows, but what it doesn't that's interesting. First look at the first page of the Pre-Tactical catalog. Notice the obvious grandfather of the Viper MV-1, the A100.

Then we have the '92 catalog that actually names the Viper Model 1.

Now look at the possible transition sheet. What it doesn't tell us is the model number. All it says is "Viper", aka possibly the Viper. Comments? Theories?

John

John,
The Gallery has become a definitive reference source thanks to your and Don's excellent work. We are all grateful. Also, the "latest picture added" feature rocks. When the Emerson historians decide to do the inevitable book, this for sure is where to start. Interactive internet publishing...cool.

Don and I thank you. I can't speak for Don, but I can say that personally it has been a pleasure putting it together and it's turning out better then I could have ever dreamed.

Having said that, I would again reiterate that without the contributions of every one of the "Suspects", this project couldn't and wouldn't be what it is.

Thank you everyone and keep the pictures coming.

John

Guys;

John does speak for me when he says we appreciate all your contributions to the "Gallery". All I do is add up a few numbers, and keep track of who owns what. John is the one who deserves the credit here in my book. He has always been more than willing to contribute everything he can to make this site better. I appreciate his efforts. In fact I've offered to buy him the first couple of drinks this year at the Blade show in Atlanta.

Speaking of the Blade show, hopefully we'll have a good turnout of "usual suspects" attending. I'm in the process of making flight reservations and hope to see lots of you there!
