Emerson Sheepdog

Well don't file anything as it will void the warranty. You can take it back to the dealer and swap it out or send it to EKI.

Send it back to EKI with a note of your experience. They stand behind their knives and will fix or replace it without question. One thing about Emerson is they listen to their customers and want to satisfy them completely. This is one of many reasons I buy Emerson knives. No worries and no bullshit.

Thanks. The dealer says mine was hand-picked and the best of his stock.

Looks great. Out of the box, worked great. Briefly. Then started locking up.

Not just a sticky lock. The more I flipped it, the harder it was to close. I'm guessing that the liner lock moves over a tiny bit with each flip until something catches on it.

Now it sometimes takes two hands to close. And even that is difficult. I've already sacrificed part of a thumbnail.

Also starting to get blade play.

Called the dealer, great people who had handpicked this at my request. He said I got the best of the bunch and advised that Emerson's are known to be sticky.

I really wanted to love this. I am so disappointed.

I have one on the way and the order was placed with GPK before your post. Even my last Emerson had sticky lock: Zealot. It's their nature but eventually it gets better. Just have to make sure you don't have any oil on the lock contact surfaces. We shall see on mine in a few days.

My Emerson RangeMaster Sheepdog Bowie Flipper Stonewash Plain came in today. So far, I really like it. Nice stonewashed Bowie blade although it looks a little odd in a small folder. The flipper is very smooth. The same aggressive G-10 as in all Emersons. The titanium lock bar does stick to the stainless steel of the blade like in most new Emersons. The degree of stickiness is quite varied. I've opened and closed it about 30 times so far and I've been able to close it with my thumb with various degrees of force. I do have a strong thumb. I'll report back after a few hundred open/close cycles.

Got one today. Lock is sticky....but only if i push it open harder than it needs to open properly. Doesn't take much to open it. Detent feel is very good and strong without being in the way of a easy open.

Still wish it was bigger. Looks kinda odd to me with the little blade. That aside came sharp and fit and finish very good. Gonna be a good user.

My lock stickiness is varied even when opening it the same way with similar force. None has resulted in a lock that I cannot open with just a thumb.

The detent on mine is about medium. I can actually flick it open without any of the other three standard opening mechanisms, that is, flipper, thumb disc and Wave.

Mine is quite sticky but I haven't used it much. Many of my Emersons have been very sticky when new and using the wave to open them, some to the point that it is hurts my thumb to close them. They eventually break in but it takes some time.

They will break in over time but I'd rather have a sticky lock than not.

Titanium liner locks do not need or have to be sticky from the start. I have two Fantoni folders with titanium liner locks and they have worked great from day one.

Also, by saying that you'd rather have a lock be sticky what about when after wearing in it's no longer sticky...

They're not all sticky from the start, but things happen. When it wears in it's no longer sticky, that's right. It's perfectly fine. I was hoping someone would pick up on the fact that I was saying I'd rather have a sticky lock then the opposite which is a lock that disengages on its own. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.

Of course, a solid lock does not need to be sticky.

A bit of #2 pencil lead works wonders until break in

Alternatively, sharpie treatment. Once the sharpie wears off it's time to reapply another coating. Need to let the coating dry before going through more open/close cycles.

Reporting back on my new Emerson Rangemaster Sheepdog Bowie Flipper. I have opened it using flipper, wave and thumb disc about 500 times.

Even with many reapplications of sharpie on the lock face it's still sticky when the sharpie wears off. It locks both early which is easy to unlock and in the middle which is tough. This is by far the worst I've encountered in any folder. This is easily remedied if the factory would harden the titanium lock face like Fantoni and others do.

The firce of the flipping eventually pushes the blade off center and touching the non lock liner as the pivot screw comes loose. Need to really tighten it down but eventually it loosens up again. May need to use a drop of blue loctite.

The detent is indeed weak whereby I can flick the blade out (in effect four opening methods) but it requires force. I can flick out my Viper Maga and Benchmade 761 the same way. None of them fall out due to gravity. It requires force. Not too concerned yet.

I'm keeping it to see if I can resolve the issues. For a $216 folder with fairly inexpensive 154CM & G-10 one expects more.
