Emerson...What's the big deal?

No worries. Different strokes and all. PM inbound.

You use the words "battlefield" and talk of if "blood" is on your hands. Liking Emerson's is cool buy what you want, but seems some Emerson fans are deluded in to believing that in the hands of every tough guy on the battlefield is an Emerson and his life depends on his folder lol That's just so untrue its not even funny.

Tactical folders are an oxymoron As they are broken by design and will never be chosen over a fixed blade.

Personally I think tactical folders are marketed to civilians who don't carry gear such as mentioned earlier. And that's cool but pretending folders are the knife of choice on the "battlefield" is silly. Its a folder.

Did you happen to notice the CQC-7 that was carried during the raid to kill Bin Ladin?
It sold for over $30,000 at auction.

Dude what's your point? Did he run into the building with his folder drawn? Did his underwear sell for lots of money? Winkler fixed blades and axes are carried by many a soldiers and they don't sell for 30 stacks. He was also wearing boots to why didn't his brand of boots get a butt load of attention? Lol people crack me up. Do you know if the seal was carrying a fixed blade as well?

well damn. I'd buy a mini A-100 for $100 in a heartbeat.
Yeah, that's sort of exactly my point. That's about where I think that knife should have been available for (MSRP of maybe 140-150 with available prices of 100-120). At that price, it's a lot easier to ignore all the rough/sloppy f&f and just appreciate the great overall design.

I don't know what else he was carrying, but I do know that he trusted his life to a folding knife or else he wouldn't have added it to his gear.

I guess my point is that you obviously don't speak for everyone when you make such claims that no operator would carry a folder.

Just saw this. You're underwhelmed because of blade play and lock stick? Both of these things can be remedied by you. I have a Jungle Commander and love it. Sure, it had to be cleaned when I got it for it to be smooth and nice, but I like it a lot now. :)

He didn't stake his life on his folder lol did he stake his life on his multitool ? He had quite the array of tools and weapons. Anyway your a" look a seal uses it " kinda guy that says enough about you for me to end conversing with you. Anything "seal" sells to folks just like you carry on good customer!!

I think the problem for most people is that for the price point, you shouldn't have to deal with these issues. Personally, for $200 I would expect better

Please note I'm not flaming, I don't actually own an Emerson, this is just what I've gleaned from reading the 100+ threads on the topic. My $0.02

All I know is, the 4 examples that I had were pretty damn good considering all the F&F complaints from people who've never owned one. My blades were all well-centered, lockup was solid and only the newer ones were sticky for the first couple of days.

I'll admit that I carry KAI products more than anything these days, but that doesn't mean I wasn't satisfied with my purchases.

Remember guys, it's ok to like different knives.

^I agree, buy the knife you like and enjoy it. Let's enjoy the hobby.. I'm done ruffling feathers. We all have one thing in common.. we ALL like knives.

Since so many of the comments seem to be about F&F...

If you're talking fit and finish and premium materials, yes Emerson's production knives may not be as refined or as up-to-date as myriad other manufacturers.

That doesn't mean the knives are similarly behind the times in terms of function and design - in fact I'd say many of their designs are superior to many as far as ergonomics and balance goes. Emerson's philosophy seems to be to produce folding knives that are weapons first, tools second. I feel like almost all of his designs are extremely well suited to that need, more so than other knives on the market. We are spoiled by CF and exotic steels and bearing actions that can be gotten cheaper elsewhere. But for some people, the premium for his designs is worth it.

Thankfully I think Emerson himself is aware of this situation and is taking measures to open up his production to a wider audience. If you prefer premium materials and a more polished finish but also want the Wave and other Emerson design features the 0620CF is a great choice. If you want the design features and don't care about F&F, materials etc., but don't want to pay as much as Emerson's factory charges for models with G10, then the Kershaw collaborations are a great choice.

If you want a knife with Emerson's designs, with premium materials and a polished finish, AND from Emerson himself, take a look at Emerson's custom knives. They have spectacular fit and finish that is as good as any production or custom knife that I've handled.

Now in 2014, there is something for everyone.

As for why Emerson does not make these changes himself; there is something about being able to say "My company has been doing the same thing for x decades and we are still going strong and our products are successful". I personally do not think this is something to live by in most cases and it doesn't excuse producing a clearly inferior product (which Emerson knives are not). But put yourself in his shoes; he helped define the tactical folding knife and built his own company to produce his designs. At the end of the day he has to make decisions that will make him happy.

In my pocket today....

I love the one that I have. CQC7-B Carried for a long time before the blade got messed up. (had someone sharpen it before I was any good at it, and they destroyed the blade) I have since pulled it from the safe, fixed the blade (sort of) and carried it a little. I beat the snot out of it for many years without any issues. Cuts great and never failed on me.

I even bought one second hand for my dad that I fixed up. It Is the same version as mine but with the wave feature.

Here is mine after making the blade useable again.

Another Plus for me is the fact that they are super easy to take down. No special tools needed.

^ damn, that is an ugly sharpening job. I would be livid lol I think I seen that knife in another thread. Good looking blade. And I agree easy of disassembly is an awesome bonus for me as well.

The back story as I recall is that the owner actually knew Ernie Emerson prior to all the UBL stuff going down and Ernie gave him the knife at some point prior to that. It was a regular production CQC7 combo edge blade. You're right, anything remotely linked to the SEALs sells like heroin in Baltimore, but the auction was a charity fundraiser for wounded special operations members so at least that $30K went to a good cause, I think we can all agree on that.

Thank you for that info! Its great the auction proceeds went wounded vets, having been around many of them it hits close to home. Have to say wise of Ernie to give the knife to him, he got a huge free advertising just by the seal wearing it. The seal, operator, special ops label makes sales for sure. Seal operator brief underwear coming to a Walmart near you lol

I know!! I was so mad when I got it back like that. Mainly the reason it sat in my safe for the last 10 years. Just got pissed everytime I saw it. But finally made the edge decent.
