Emerson...What's the big deal?

Let's not start or continue trying to start a pissing match, everyone is going to end up wet.

I used to be an Emerson fan, until I bought my first ZT. ZT cleans Emerson's clock, IMHO:

1. Fit and finish
2. Blade centering
3. Fit and finish
4. Liners that don't wear out
5. Fit and finish
6. Non chisel ground blades

I like Emersons and own a few. Realistically, do they have some fit and finish issues? Yes. However, overall I think Emerson has some outstanding designs and I really like their product.

I also really like ZT. Do they also have some fit and finish issues? Yes. They may be in the upper echelon, however they are not immune to problems, And are not perfect. That being said, I have not found a single manufacturer so far, that is immune to any such issues as fit and finish or occasional quality control issues. As someone in this thread previously stated I like knives, Emerson makes knives, so I own some Emersons. I also own some ZT's, some Spyderco's, and various other brands.

I tend to look at any brand as a whole picture, and not just dwell on single issues. If I dismissed any brand because of single quality control or fit and finish issues, I would not own any knives.

Just my humble opinion.

emersons feel way different and way nicer after they have been really broken in and used for a while.

ive currently been carrying my emerson bulldog a lot, its a perfect size for my hand.

I love ZT's knives too, but they are not immune to 5 of those issues listed. Take a look at their now closed forum...

I have purchased 7 ZTs, and NONE of them have had ANY of the problems mentioned. I have experienced one or more of those problems on EVERY Emerson that I had owned. Not trying to pick a fight, just relaying my experiences.

Well is it not wonderful that everyone don't think alike, if we all did there would be no reason to have this discussion. Blade Forum could close down as there would be no need to ask questions, exchange information, opinions, as all our brains would have gthe same information already.

I usually get my Emersons secondhand. To me there's really not much of a benefit of paying the premium on them new. That being said, one of my favorite knives atm is a SOCFK-B, though I also have plenty of ZT's and Benchmades, and a few midtechs/customs.

However, I would like to see more ZT Emerson models... a ZT SOCFK would be awesome.

I was never a fan of they way they look. Never picked one up. Lots of other choices that are pleasing to the eye. That's what makes this hobby so great

gotta thank the OP for starting this thread. I'm pretty new to folding knives and have been looking at many brands of production folders. I'm sure you guys have gone through that phase, being a newbie scouring for that 'best value' folder.

My 'research' includes some handling, but more of the internet. Checking out BF for reviews, looking at pics and stats, comparing materials and prices. Far from comprehensive, my research however did provide me a list of must-trys.

Weird but true, I also came up with a list of brands I won't consider. Cuz I looked thru so many brands multiple times that I got a little tired, and decided to come up with that list to eliminate some brands and make life easier. Though this list was based purely on comparison of materials and price, value so to speak. Emerson was one of them, despite the positive feedback I've seen online.

guess all I'm saying is that for a newbie who has never owned/handled an Emerson, good chance he'll be wondering what's the deal???

Not hating on Emerson, in fact I enjoy watching his interviews where he talked about the origin of the wave design. He's a class act, how can anyone not like this guy seriously! But for now my only way of support is by buying his ZT/Kershaw collaborations. now lemme look at that zt0620 again...

I have no idea what you are talking about. My post was quite clear, if you don't understand I'm not sure what more can be done to simplify things.

My point is simple, but maybe too complexed for some to comprhend. If everyone who visited these forum like Blade Forum, had the same life experences, knowledge, or ideas. There would be zero reason to come, as there would be nothing to learn or share. Becasue we were all equaly in knowledge, life experencce, and ideas.

Same reason some of us choose to go the the doctor when sice, because that doctor has about 12 years of medical training most of us don't have. That training in medicine could save our lives.

What would Rocky Dennis do?

i like ZT knives, but ive had more issues with ZTs than i have had with emersons. i bought a new zt 0550 that would easily fail when i would apply even a little bit of pressure to the spine of the blade. then i bought a new zt 0566 with a framelock that wouldnt properly make contact with the back of the blade. also my new zt/emerson is impossible to open with my thumb due to the crazy detent. every company has their share of lemons.

Your point is so complex, I don't think it makes sense to anyone. If you actually have something to contribute here aside from trying to be clever, please go right ahead. People visit the forums for various reasons some to learn, discuss, and at times antagonize. Join the discussion as a member, leave the moderating to me, does that makes enough sense? Given your history, you should leave well enough alone.

Ignore the masses, listen to the cognoscenti, then go find out for yourself.

I just don't like the Philips head screws and the fact that the materials;black g10 and blade steel have not changed in the last 15 years.

I don't get it, either. The materials and technology don't match the price point. The wave mechanism is not useful, to me. I have tried it on a friend's Endura. No thanks. I also read consistent reviews of poor to mediocre quality. So, I've never bought one. Probably never will.
