What does it take for you to become so personally attached to a specific knife that you would not be satisfied to trade for brand new one (even with compensation for any added value work/materials you put into it )?

Gift from my 2 boys! I received a 950 rift from them on Father’s Day! I usually never receive knives for gifts but was a rare occasion and not particularly a knife that I would have ever picked my self but being that it’s from them I wouldn’t dream of letting it go!

For me all it takes is a fond memory that includes the knife in question.

Like I have and emotional attachment to my Nitrous Stryker from Benchmade because
it was my first good knife and I got it from a friend that I have lost touch with. The knife
Makes me remember good times hanging out with that friend.

Experiences with the knife. Memories and stories that involve the knife make it unique. The wear and tear that gives the knife a character that only develops over time and use.

Sentimental value.
I've got knives from my childhood, knives from my father or grandfather, knives that represent something for me, and those which were generous gifts from great forum members that I couldn't replace.
Not every knife I'm gifted is instantly sentimental though, because my dad would by me flea market folders all the time to add to my collection as a teenager, and I had no problem selling any that no longer interested me.

Then there are knives like my Buck 482 that I definitely love and would hate to lose, but I'm not as into one handed opening right now as I was and don't currently think I'd even replace it. I loved it enough to Dremel my initials into the handle, but I just don't carry it much now.

Hmmm...let's see. The ones gifted by important ones, bought for anniversaries, nearly cutting my pink finger off, or spent $500 but now only worth $100 (this one is made up).

I have a KaBar fixed blade that was my dad's when he was in the Navy and a stockman pattern traditional that he carried for the last forty or so years of his life. I will never let them go. I also have a Buck 110 from the 1970s that served as my work, kitchen, and everything else knife for many years that I will never get rid of. The first two knives have a lot of sentimental value and the last one has a lot of good memories associated with it.

Have a couple such as my very first pocket given to me by a neighbor that was more like a grandpa to me ... and one that my dad carried for years. Those will never leave me until it's my time to pass them on.

And then there are a couple gifted to me that have a special meaning.

And one other that I was carrying and used on the last hunt in our early 20s with my childhood friend that shows in pictures of our trip ... just a few weeks before he was taken far to young ... but I gave him a hard time coming all that way and forgetting his knife so he used mine and after we lost him ... the next time I picked up the knife it just brought back all the years every hunt we shared ... and it is in the same place with the other milestone knives.

Thanks for all the memories old friend ... I still miss you.

I have never been gifted a knife. I have one knife that I am very attached to. It is a Parker Brother's survival knife with emergency signals on the handle. I carried that on my side hundreds of times gold prospecting the local mountains here. Love that knife.

I have 3 gifts I will never part with.
Police SS
RAT Cutlery RC6
Manix 2 TB LW

And your not touching my GBs, 940-1 or Rookie G10 either. :)

If it's a gift, the sentimental value comes with the knife. If it's one I've bought for myself, it has to earn it's value by doing what I bought it to do and by being part of a memorable experience(s).

The Large 21 Sebenza made in my only child's birthday. I polished the bevels of the handles and one of the best parts, it's a user.

It is 1 of 7, found it on the exchange only 10 months after she was born (some folks look for a particular date for years). I have been a member on here for almost 4 years, and I have yet to see another with that date.

If anyone were to offer me funds or another knife, it would have to be another CRK (preferably a Ti-Lock) made on the same day. Aside from that, it will eventually be handed down to her on my deathbed or her significant other upon the day of their marriage.

I got it for a song too, only $280ish, and it is invaluable to me. 20170312_162009.jpg 20170313_111729.jpg
