Emotional attachment . What does it take ?

Like many others, I wouldn't part with knives that were inherited from or gifted to me by people that I care about. About the only other one I wouldn't trade for a new and improved version for sentimental reasons is my favorite hunting knife. I've just carried it too many miles on too many hunts with friends.

I have emo attachment to mostly everything I had custom made.
But I have some low priced prods who carry a lot of emotional value, according on who gifted it to me.
There are also some knifes I connect with when I use them, as with this Benchmade Rift that I have been caring all over the world, and he has not a happy life... Even if I love it a lot!

Sentimental. First boy scout knife, first knife my grandpa gave me. Etc.

Blood. I accomplished or lived something through it. Ex: Dui Churra almost cut my leg off and killed me. It's mine, I am hers....First knife my dad gave me to gut my first deer...again blood.

Birth. Wedding knife my wife agreed to have custom made for us. First custom knives made for my son and daughter.

Historic/death/sentimental: EK knives ww2 and VN. Old Randalls and Cases. One old Moran. Civil War and any battle used anything I keep...everyone in my family served, male.....some female.

You know inconsequential stuff

Here’s my super special BM! My sons ordered it without my knowledge and had their initials engraved. Had custom scales made for it. 710-1401, total kick ass knife with M390 steel.
Love it!

My kids are 5 and 3. I hope one day to raise them that well:)

Sentimental is number 1 and then just fond memories of use and time in my pocket. I only have about 8 knives total that I would never ever let go of.

I have a knife that I've owned for years and it's been to hell and back with me on more than one occasion.

I carried it years ago overseas when work took me there. I still carry it now on jobs. I have plenty of newer , prettier knives. But that's not the point.

This knife is scratched and a little banged up. But it still takes a sweet edge and opens/closes smoothly like new.

Like an old war buddy who you could count in to help you get through what you had to get through and get you home in one piece.

Even now it's sitting by my keys and wallet waiting for our next trek (just the dump and CVS this morning , haha , how things change).

Hey!!! Who knows??? The trip to the dump and CVS might be a memorable one!!
:D

I saw a zt562 on the aPostleP's YT channel. I caught the serial number which was 0318. I wanted the knife but got it only after Rob located the friend/customer of his that owned it. A sale was arranged and it was upgraded with a Silver/Baige Ti scale.
I plan to hand it down to my son. His twin sister passed away in trauma room 318 after flipping end over end and rolling over fully two times landing on the roof in a farmers field 1/2 mile from home. She was 23. I have other knives which tie with something of another tragedy or birth dates.
Don't mean to cast a bad post with this content. But I'm glad to have found a few knives out of the many numbered issues in the wild to "have and to hold".

Ah man so sorry to hear for your unimaginable loss! Can’t even imagine what you’v gone through but just believe that she’s in a better place! You will meet up with her again!

Prayers sent for you and your family brother.

Emotional attachment . What does it take ?
Well if someone feeds me I tend to hang around.
This is sort of true for me to and I know it was said in jest. I develop a lot of loyalty towards people that "feed me".

With knives, only as a kid have knives been gifted to me and I don't have any attachment to them at all at this point I have more attachment to the early ones I bought simply because I know how hard it was for me to come up with the money at the time, use it for years, still like it.

As an adult, anyone that knows me probably would be hesitant to gift me a knife thinking I might actually use it. Got many that never have been used. Knives are kind of personal choices and it's hard to choose for for someone else unless you imitate what they already have and like. I like Carhartt pocket tea shirts and I get gifted those because people know I will use them.

Overall, most emotional attachments I have towards knives is the result of my using them and trusting that they will do the job when I need it. But I have no hesitation replacing them if I feel like. So, is that an emotional attachment at all?

A 110 and a Vic Champ, both of which were gifts. Otherwise, all knives I’ve used on happy trips outdoors; they carry an imbedded association with positive memories.

Sorry for your family's loss ... I'm sure your son will hold onto the knife when you pass it on.

For me it was using my DPX HEST to pry a car door open that a WW2 vet was trapped in and then using it to cut his seat belt and drag him out. I feel nekked without my HEST. I feel guilty sometimes because I have a pretty decent collection and will get more but it is the HEST I give my sons.

WOW that’s an awesome knife story! How did it hold up?
