Emotional attachment . What does it take ?

Experiences with the knife. Memories and stories that involve the knife make it unique. The wear and tear that gives the knife a character that only develops over time and use.

Yes I was going to add that but you beat me to it. Other than recieving a knife as a gift, a knife being there for you all the time because you carry it can make it sentimental.

What does it take for you to become so personally attached to a specific knife that you would not be satisfied to trade for brand new one (even with compensation for any added value work/materials you put into it )?

Generally it has to be a gift or an inheritance for that sort of relationship to form. Some sort of sentimental event that transcends it's value as an object. Otherwise I may love it, but it's still a tool. Just a thing.

The Large 21 Sebenza made in my only child's birthday. I polished the bevels of the handles and one of the best parts, it's a user.

It is 1 of 7, found it on the exchange only 10 months after she was born (some folks look for a particular date for years). I have been a member on here for almost 4 years, and I have yet to see another with that date.

If anyone were to offer me funds or another knife, it would have to be another CRK (preferably a Ti-Lock) made on the same day. Aside from that, it will eventually be handed down to her on my deathbed or her significant other upon the day of their marriage.

I got it for a song too, only $280ish, and it is invaluable to me. View attachment 792364 View attachment 792365
Lucky you. I'd hoped to find a similar knife, but sadly CRK took the day off on my son's day of birth. Slackers.

I don't let emotions get involved with knives/tools, there are much bigger things in life for that. If I like the knife.... I won't sell, trade or return it....case closed, It works for me so i'm keeping it.

What is the date you are looking for?
And thank you, I know I lucked out.

That would appear to be my MO too and that includes knives I don't like.;)

I have a few junkers that I know I'll never use and have considered just tossing them in the trash... but I just can't bring myself to do it.

I contacted CRK asking what models they made that day and if they had a list of distributors they went to, hoping to track one down. They said they don't generally work on Fridays and no knives were made on that date. :(

Does any other manufacturer make note of the specific date of manufacture? I know a few that list the month and year, but the day itself?

Some of my BEER has a "born on date" but none of my knives .

Hey Bryce!
I’m pretty sure some Microtechs have the born on dates. Almost positive I saw it on my Ultratech. I’ll check when I get home for you.

Thanks Joe, but don't go out of your way. I'l save the politics for someone else and just say Microtech isn't in for consideration.

It's not a real issue. I can always just get something engraved. Would've been cool to snag a CRK with the same birth date though.

Brous blades dates their knives to the day. Shoot them a phone call and see what that nets you.
As far as customs go, you have @T.A.DAVISON traditional knives. Which would make for a nice events and dinners knife.

Looking for more brands that do so.

Oh, nifty! Thanks for that info. I like a few of the Brous designs. Might look into it.

My beloved dog died a few years ago. I was rooting around in the shed recently and found an old Magnum knife that I had completely forgotten. I bought it at an Army/Navy surplus for something like ten dollars. I might have carried it once or twice - this was before I started collecting knives. I remember that I caught my dog chewing on it and put it in a box and never thought about it again. It has his teeth marks on it. I will never get rid of this knife.

My first nice knife was my benchmade cla. My wife and daughter drove over an hour to buy it and completely surprised me with it. They gave me input on a few things to make it my own and i'll never part with it. That knife started my love for benchmade and they have since gifted me a north fork. I had a custom 707 done up for my wife. I've been bitten by the knife (benchmade) bug!

I have a beat to snot Emerson CQC-7 that I bought in 2004. I took it with me to Afghanistan in 2006, Iraq in 2008 and 2009. I carried it in India and in the field for years. The tip broke, the blade has been reground many times over, but I can't manage to toss it. In fact it is currently sitting in a few pieces as I ordered new washers for it. I wouldn't really call it "emotional attachment" but I would say it qualifies for deep sentiment.

Have one more knife to add to the list; for my first Father's Day, The Misses commissioned a custom fixed blade from @nighthaxan, Charles did a phenomenal job on the knife and even scrapped the first one he made since the Oh Mai! pattern didn't show up on the blade... How is that for integrity. All that work, and he just tossed the blade out...

Pics when I get home.
