EMP protection

Just wondering if I disconnect my batteries on camp truck will it be protected from an EMP. My thinking is that if everything is disconnected theres nothing to fry. Anyone know this to be certain one way or the other. Also will an emp fry my flashlights?

One last thing what do most of ya'll do about water storage?

Even if disconnected it will fry. An EMP produces a magnetic power surge that washes over every electronic equipment, that according to the intensity and lack of shielding of the device, will fry everything electronic if in range. If I'm not mistaken, simple electric circuits, like an old flash light can take it.

Keep bottles of it in the basement.

An EMP induces electrical current. Even if you don't have the battery it won't matter.

Though really, if an EMP hits like they say it could we're all fraked (BSG!) anyways.

Anything with an IC chip is toast

Transistors probably will not fare much better

My 1969 Volkswagen will run just fine as long as I adjust the points once in a while and I will do ok whistling instead of listening to the radio.

I keep (8) gallon jugs in the basement. There is a hot water heater full of water if I get desperate. There is a lake down the street, I can always get water from it and rig up a gravity water filtration system with a Brita filter and (2) 5 gal pails if I need to.

Candles are not affected by EMP !!
Most electrical stuff is unless put inside a Faraday cage !

The electronics that control the oven are on the outside of the cage.

Besides, how is he going to fit his truck in a microwave?

LOL

Hmmm, somebody's been reading Lights Out or One Second After.

I bet a .50 cal ammo can would make a good faraday cage for small stuff. You basically need a metal box or fine mesh cage, from what I'd read.

For an older carbureted vehicle, a spare coil and ignition module stored in a cage might enable it to get running again. An FI vehicle with a comuter is screwed.

The EMP threat is way overblown. Prep as you would for a natural disaster, and stop worrying about EMP.

At least we hope the threat is overblown. There are things other than a nuclear detonation that produce the same thing. Scientists are saying that we could have solar activity strong enough to produce the same thing in the next two or three years.

I hope they're wrong, too.

there are a lot of scientist who say a lot of things but rarely do they ever have proof or fact to support their theories

Well, that's certainly true.:D

In this case though, it's NASA in conjunction with a number of astronomers and meteorologists. We experience heavy sunspot activity periodically and, about every twelve years, get super sunspot activity. This one, supposedly, will be the worst since the mid 1800's.

As you said, though, they're not always right... and I hope this will be one of those times.

Everybody needs to stick a laptop in a faraday cage so we can still get on Bladeforums.:D

We make RF generators up to 20,000 watts

Plays hell with cell phones near the test benches.

I think the easiest disaster for ME to deal with would be an EMP. As long as my house was intact, I could go for quite a while with very little effort. I'm on a well and septic, so all I need is a water source. There is a lake 1 mile away, so I am good there. I have enough food for a month or so and plenty of squirrels, rabbits and turkey to supplement. Could care less about the phone. Don't need TV either. Computer is just entertainment. I have several tube radios that might make it and I have limited power to run some ac devices.

As long as I didn't get sick or have some maggot trying to take my stuff, I would kinda just hang out till things returned to normal.

I would think a city dweller would be a bit worse off.

BTW, an old incandescent flashlight would be ok, but your surefire LED is gonna be TOAST!

December 21st 2012:eek:

I was thinking about travel after it happens, I can walk home from work but I will need to get my little boy from school and wife from work. My four wheelers should work, theres nothing electronic on them.

I don't think the emp is overblown, I think we are in uncharted waters here as of late, this technology has been around for a while. We used some bombs that are emps in Bosnia to shut down power stations. My thinking is this, its and after the crazy crap thats been going on since I've been on this earth, I'm no longer leaving things to chance. Just turn on the tv for a couple of nights are surf the web and that should illustrate perfectly well that just about anything is now not only possible but becoming ever more probable.

I honestly don't remember the date they were talking about. I researched it for another purpose and, if I remember correctly, a range of dates was given. They said that they couldn't give an exact date this far in advance, but it was a couple of years away.

Let me see if I can dig up the url.
