Do NOT check pawnshops. I am a retired pawnbroker. If a pawnbroker has it OUT FOR SALE, go ahead and check. But if it is ....just stolen.... leave it to the cops.
We were required by law to report all pawns and buys DAILY to the police. AND...it is a violation of the privacy laws for a pawnbroker to divulge ANY INFORMATION to anyone but an investigating officer.
We even had to deny info to COPS who had kids who stole stuff from them.
They got mad, but we referred them to the pawnshop detective and let him handle it.
A pawnbroker can be sued from here to breakfast for giving out info on a pledgor.
Good pawnbrokers report to the police as required by law.
Let the cops FIND it.
I can't even COUNT the number of folks we pissed off by refusing information.
If it has passed the "hold period" the pawnbroker will usually let you buy it back for his cost. But ONLY if you have filed a police report.
There was nothing more maddening than the folks who came in all irate about my pawning an item for a ....relative.... of theirs yet they did not want to file a police report and GET THEM IN TROUBLE.
I gladly surrendered all stolen property. I simply called the DA and got restitution made a condition of probation so the crook could pay me back what I loaned him or ..... stay in jail.
It is an easy procedure, but few understand it.
