I guess I don't see what the big deal is? Ebay wants my phone number, ohhh noooos! Seller is a pawn shop, they usually require it for the transaction logs. It's not like they are ever going to call you.
Florida is such a state. Even Game stop is required to get a thumbprint when taking used games because my area of the state considers them a type of pawn shop. You mentioned "pawn shop". I assume your seller is a pawn shop and it is possible his state's regulations require him to have a phone number as well as an address even for those he sells to, not just buys from. Most states license pawn shops and gave rules for records they must keep for both buyers and sellers.
"a phone number":
1. In case there is a problem.
2. So the shipping label can be printed:
3. To verify my address.
Used to be that being a PayPal "Verified" member took care of these issues, but since the split from eBay there have been some changes. That being said I feel that you are taking a small, easily remedied issue and blowing it into this conspiratorial plan to steal your info. Calm down and don't use them if this angers you so. The most powerful way to show dissatisfaction with a business is not to use them. I have used eBay off and on for years and have learned that usually when they ask for info it's because they are trying to prevent scams that folks just like you have fallen victim to. I'd give them the benefit of the doubt if it saves me from possible fraud...
Also once again, THEN DONT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM. Maybe they lied, maybe no one actually knew what was going on. Either way we are talking about "a" phone number! Not a SS, or DL, or a passport, just a phone number. No one changed the price on you or decided to change the shipping. I have seen some really majorly bad things that have happened to eBay users that warranted this kind of reaction. Yours doesn't even warrant a thread.Once again, I am upset because I made a deal and after the deal was closed, the seller added conditions. When I asked eBay about it, eBay backed changing the deal after the fact. Collectively, eBay and the seller gave three inconsistent reasons why the telephone number was now - after the deal was made - "required." Not to mention that eBay first said it required the number before changing to the story that the seller required the number.
Now, do you like being lied to? Do like like deals changing after the contract is made?
You are, of course, entitled to your opinion although you deny that privilege to me.

I notice that when people post here sometimes expecting the others to rise up in anger with them and it doesn't work out the way they hope they claim others aren't allowing them their opinion. Actually it's called disagreeing and it's what most folks have done in this post. Its also what a forum is for. You as always are entitled to your opinion, just know that others are entitled to tell you your opinion sucks. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion although you deny that privilege to me.
And what is the advice given here all the time when a deal does not work out? Walk away. Don't do business with that person again. You are out no money.
