E's Feb Challenge thread

Hey Everybody.....

Remember it ain't a pitchfork........I did a friction fire set with a Patrol Machete once, just to make a point......Never again, I hope....Methinks you might all should be thinking Necker and Eskabar.....You will be using the point a lot.........

All Best.......

#62 in for a three pointer. Got the eskabar out stripped her half naked and put polish on her that will make her cut like angry beaver. I agree with Ethan a BK11 or BK14 are the way too success as it will be mostly fine carving after the fist thirty mins of hacking.

Sharpened up my Esky last night. She is ready now. This should be a good way to determine if I like the gutted paracord wrap or a full paracord wrap.

#22 in for a 3 tine with the BK 9.

Question about materials for use, Does it have to be green wood freshly harvested?

I've got a small piece of an african hardwood left over from another project I'd like to use. I'm gonna have to work the heck out of cause it's harder than woodpecker lips.

After you click onto thebecker sub forum it's usually the top thread in the sticky section.

I just finiished mine today. 4 hours of work, was going to buy an Eskabar for this but decided that might be to easy and used my BK7. Went with 3 tines, pics should be up later

Tell you what: never really used a becker before this forking challenge.
Took my BK-2 out of the box, looked at it...what?no scandi edge?...honestly I thought it won't make it. And if it will, the result won't be worthy of any competition entry....
However, I gave it a try and...surprise: this knife is AWESOME! Pretty pleased with the result too (actually can't stop carving....:D)
What I learned:
1. this knife can chop.
2.The edge on the the point was not a perfect "V"...
Took it to my stones and sandpaper....perfect V/convexed edge now.....wow this steel can take an edge.
3. this knife can carve - sharpened tip works great for fine work.
4. this knife is awesome! I finally feel you Moose.

Conclusion: while longer blades chop better, they perform poorly at fine wood work. Smaller/thinner blades perform better at fine work , but forget chopping.
BK-2 is the perfect compromise...and thanks to you beckerheads and this forum I made the wright choice... I just wasn't sure until this fork contest.

I spent a good couple hours last night working on the forking fork, and now my hand is killing me. I think the effort will be worth it. I'm really diggin' how it's coming out :D

How is everyone going to treat their fork to seal it somehow? I was thinking about vegetable oil or something like that.

I just looked at the Feb challenge and there's not a lot of pic's up yet, does everyone wait till the end for a dramatic finish or is it that not many people finished yet?

Food grade mineral oil, is the only thing you should use if your gonna eat off it. Actually vegetable oil is alright for eating's sake, it can go rancid though.

So my 1st attempt was confiscated by my better half...went right into the salad bowl this past weekend.
Good excuse for finishing my second one, which is closer to what I had in mind first time.

I was wondering the same thing....
My second attempt will be up soon. I got an Idea about the 3rd one, but I busted open two fingers so far...one pretty bad.

I will be going 3 tyne. I only have a BK 2, 9 and 13. I can't carve for sh!t to begin with so the 2 and the 9 are out. Leaving me with the little 13.

Questions:

1. is sanding/filing/smoothing of any kind allowed, other then with
the knife ?

2. does it have to be sealed (HAVE to be) or is it up to us ?

thanks

Based on what moose has said earlier 1. NO, 2. NO, probably ok if you wanted to do it though.

I'm looking forward to seeing yours with the 13. I love that knife!!! You'll do fine. I never really carved anything before this either.

Nothing other than with the knife, got it.

Saw you mentioned food grade mineral oil earlier. So that's OK ?

Slow going with the Remora, have learned to sharpen it real well though.
Sucker takes a great edge. Doesn't hold it forever but, sharp little bugger.

Extra points for blood stains ? LOL
