oh man... that's not supposed to happen to 1095 steel! makes me rethink the ontario RTAK1... maybe I'll have to shell out the bones for a Livesay.
that should not have weakened the blade significantly unless there were already some micro-fissures in it - especially if you soaked it in a baking soda slurry or salt water to neutralize the acid afterwords.
You might check and see if there are any makers near you who would be willing to reprofile the blade for a reasonable price. If not, I'd be willing to give it a try for the cost of the sanding belts + shipping -- but I couldn't give any kind of guarantee on results, like loss of heat treat in the reworked area.
This happened not five minutes ago while I was chopping down a black walnut less that two inches in diameter. I didn't hit any rocks or anything either.
Oh man, let those black walnuts grow until you can get some good lumber out of them.![]()
