Ever heard of GSM Outdoors? They just bought Cold steel.

I don't think it's a liquidation sale or that they're trying to clear inventory. I think it is smart business and cashing in on the panic buying.
I agree it's a "strike-while-the-iron-is-hot" move, and smart business.

It worked on me. Some pretty good deals there, and I crossed a few folks off my Xmas shopping list with some Cold Steel goodies.

Looking at the other brands in their lineup, they all carry the same one year, original owner, with receipt warranty.
The receipt thing is ridiculous. I recently received a Case Canoe in the mail from BHQ and there was nothing in the box but the knife, and shipping peanuts.
I’m not comparing Case’s warranty to this new CS warranty, but if a sales receipt WAS required, what would I need to do, forward the confirmation email from BHQ?

"Original sales receipt must be produced for any warranty service..."

I would hope in this age that something digital would suffice but I don't know.

The man decided to retire and selling the company was probably the path of least resistance in his case. The way things are going right now, I really can’t say that I blame him. As far as where Cold Steel will end up, google the reputation of the company that bought the brand and that will give you a pretty good idea.

Well, Lynn Thomson's video answers the concerns that I had:

As long as he and Andrew Demko are going to be involved, that will be a good thing.

I hope that they have some good things to offer for new 2021 products.

I really can't blame LT for selling to a bigger company.

Doing business in Califonia is real expensive.

There is much more competition now.

Plus the problems they have had with bringing out new products and having to cancel them because of manufacturer contractor issues.

They aren't the only company to have done this.

SOG got sold and Spencer Fraser retired.

They were a little slow in offering new and upgraded products in my opinion though.

IMO it would make getting warranty work more complicated, and unless it was a pricey model, I’d probably just pitch the knife.

As far as the video goes, in it Lynn stated that he no longer owns the company and also that he still works for the company. Personally, I see no reason to think that allows him the room for 100% disclosure and candor. He could be fired, sued, or otherwise face some claw back of proceeds of the sale for disparaging remarks or anything anyone would interpret as such. All that video did was confirm the sale, which wasn't even necessary. Nothing else of real value was stated, just obviously biased opinion. Though the specificity of naming himself and Demko makes it clear enough that no one else was retained.

That's just it, they COUNT on you losing that receipt.

I mean, if there was an immediate, obvious, flaw in the knife, that you could see upon purchase, you would probably still be OK warranty wise, but dang. It might be years before I'm attacked by a Ford and need to stab it to death, you know. I always rested easy, knowing LT had me covered.

LOL! At some point, you have to consider the "warranty" isn't worth the paper it's printed on, and just consider your money gone.

I have a flashlight here, it's a Bell & Howell TacLight. Got 3 of them for $20. If it goes belly-up, am I going to look for the receipt?

Nope, I ain't. It simply isn't worth my time, so outfits that offer a warranty this cheap will only earn around a $20 bill from me.

If I want a real flashlight, it's going to be from an outfit that backs it up. Same with my knives. You want real money from me? Offer a real warranty.

Will I buy Cold Steel stuff in the future? I dunno. But if I do, it won't be anything that cost more than the couple of bucks I can throw away.

Well, they got bought by a company that was bought by another company...

From telecomunications providers to breweries and anything else - you never want to buy brand owned by another brand, yet alone the brand thay belongs to brand which also has an owner...

You do know what this means...
More people on head positions that want their piece of the cake.

Example:
Sold Steel makes 1000 000$ of profit after paying the sallaries to people.
But, part of that profit now goes to GSM.
And part of profit made by GSM also goes to their owner Sentinel.

Who is paying for that?
- YOU!

So, they aren't really able to give you a good deal anymore.

Example:
You used to pay $30 for Mini Tac Tanto in AUS 8A.
Now you'll pay $30 for Mini Tac Tanto in 4034...

Lynn did do a lot for us, but he also claimed 4034 is a good steel, ignored sheath issues, left us without a word, and basically just dumped his entire team that has been carrying him for 40 years.

I don't mind him selling the company, but I do mind the way how he did it...

Sold Steel has been going bad for a while, now we at least know what's up...

Ive been buying knives since 1976 and have never needed warranty work on any of them.I could care less about warranties on knives,of all things....

It’s not the warranty: it’s about the warranted product. If they feel the need to pull back after 40 years it’s because they intend to produce junk with zero support. Lose a screw or break a pocket clip and you are on your own; at best they will wish you a good day as they hang up on you. Most likely, they will never answer the phone/email.

I wander how much the COVID protocols, CA politics and the presidential change, affected this decision. Destroy an economy and this is what happens.

We can’t discussed that here. Political discussions on limited to that forum.

I try to make every knife purchase based on what would best suit a specific need I'm looking to fulfill. And the truth is I don't need suddenly today what I didn't need yesterday. That's just FOMO.

Some of us just like to buy knives that we think are neat or fun, you don't always need a practical reason. I'd been meaning to pick up an Ad15 for awhile so I wouldn't need to use my custom one but had just never gotten around to it. So in the off chance that they do discontinue it, or make changes, I decided to take advantage of a sale. Nothing wrong with that.
