Ever total up how much you have spent on knives?

No way. If I ever did, my wife would never hear the total.

Haha, yes! I guard that number like it's a critical state secret.

Had a mild emergency the other day where she saw a bunch of empty knife boxes. Her face got all contorted, hit me with the stink-eye beam, and started counting boxes. Luckily, I'm a grade A BS'er, and explained that these were just the empty boxes from knives I 'used' to own. Slight shrug, and she walked away.

She saw but a fraction of the total. *Gulp*

I've sold off about half of my knives and made back about 10 grand over the last 18 months . Fact of life when you live close to a very big knife dealer .

I love knives and all that but as my kid gets older the knives mean less and less and honestly I feel kinda silly spending so much on them over the years

Now what I've spent on guns is between me and God , I spent that before I was married no way is the wife every finding that out .

The fabled "Sebenza" takes a toll on ones wallet. Around 3k in the last year that I fell ill with horrible disease. Oh well.

No I really do not want to think about it, not as bad as my 1911 addiction but still

I feel your pain on this one . Thing about 1911s, at least the ones I've bought I've never lost money if I went to get rid if them . Back when I first got married the engine in my wife's car just went out and it came time to go car shopping . I'm not one to get in debt though . 2 Dan Wessons, a Wilson and a nighthawk bought my wife a very nice used car to travel to and from work in.

No way... Just since Jan. I've picked up a couple of Randalls (a model 5-6, and a model 16 SP1), a Kabar Dog's Head... Copper stockman and fixed 1213, a zt 0560bw, another Emerson... I also have a GEC 77 Barlow on order.... And some other smaller stuff... And Busse's operation 2 weeks will likely start up soon... Not to mention sheaths, sharpening stuff, Ballistol... Oh man...

Man, I was afraid to even open this thread!

Busses and Randalls are an investment though. I used to buy everything I could afford then sell off what I didn't love .

Now a days if I buy something I think about it for awhile rather than go out and buy it . If I still want the same knife after a month or so I'll buy it .

Also now when it comes to higher end knives I also buy knives that hold their value . Couple of pieces I was sure would hold their value ,didn't and the ones I thought I'd lose money on I didn't .

I'm not into knives for the money ,but it's nice to be able to at least not lose and I'll be happy . I try to let the hobby pay for itself , if I want something like I said in wait about a month to make sure I still want it and then I'll sell something to buy it ..

At the first of this year I made resolution to only spend $100 a month on this hobby/addiction. Here we are with only a little over half of the year gone and I have sold off most of my collection as well as my guitar collection. I then decided that was a stupid move and needed to rebuild and set aside $5000 from the money I made selling everything (with my wife having a lot of influence for most of the money to go into the bank). I now have $700 left and have bought no new guitars. I'm into slipjoints and as you know outside of customs (of which I have only bought one) about $200 is the most even really nice slipjoints cost but almost every thing I've bought has been under $100. I am now trying to decide between a Mnandi or a Todd Davidson to eat up the remaining funds. Then it's back to out of pocket money because I know I won't stop buying. Some people say this would make me a knife knut but I really think I've gone insane and now I'm just an old idiot.

Don't be so hard on yourself R Redden... we are all crazy here. Clearly. Outside of Bladeforums (and the like), there are very, very few people who get the obsession with sharp, pointy steel. As for knives that keep their value, and maybe even appreciate, yes Busses and Randalls are in that category, but I'm definitely and user, so resale would take a hit. Luckily, I'm one of those guys who bought fairly judiciously, and have had fun putting those bad boys to use. Now, my kids have laid claim to various knives, so if I use the whole lot less in favor or one or two favorites, I feel less bad... they are going to be passed down. Regardless, they all get used from time to time. Yes, even--and especially--the Randalls. Such great grinds on those knives!

It all feels so much better without a running tally of the grand total spent. I do try to strike a balance between buying and selling off knives that I don't use or carry in favor of those I'd enjoy putting to work.

Hey R Redden, nice boom stick in your avatar, btw.
