How often do you throw a knife in your pocket at the start of the day, then put it away at the end of the day, and realize you never took it out in between?

Happens to me quite a bit, especially during the week. Just not a lot of opportunities to use a knife sitting behind a desk.

Happens to me too. I’ve carried a knife, light and pistol for a long time now. Of course the knife and light see more day to day use. I’ve only had to draw down on someone once in my lifetime with a pistol. I use my knife and light almost daily.

You know the saying, better to have it and not need it…

Sadly, almost every day.
I carry a small assortment of cutting options every day. From a small sak, Victorinox evo 85s lately, to a mid size fixed blade, Esee 4 s35vn today. I like to have different tools for different tasks. But most days the sad truth is I just don't get to cut much. Most days the one sak would probably suffice for all my cutting needs. I use the scissors as much as the blade.
Then some days, we get to take a short hike or go play at the park and I usually end up with a carving and whittling project of some sort and get to use a bunch of knives and saws. 😁

My old man told me something that I will always remember when he saw me turning into an obsessed knife nut. He said a pocket knife is something that is carried a lot, but only used once in a while to cut something. Most the time it just sits in the pocket.

I maybe have use of a pocket knife a few times a day. Maybe.

Still carry my old Spyderco serrated police daily but definitely don't use it like I used to which was pretty much daily on construction sites. I also carry a small gerber single bladed pocketknife that gets used quite often on a daily basis these days. I still carry the old police as well whether its needed or not. Oh, I did use the Spyderco last week to cut my wife's hospital band off before we left the ER as she hates those things.

It happens now and then, but probably 90% of the days in a year I use whatever knife I'm carrying for something. Some days way more than others.

Fellow desk driver here, and can confirm. These days, I carry multiple knives just because I like having something to fidgit with when on a telecon or something, but chances are high that I won't use them at all that day, unless I'm at lunch somewhere and need to cut a sandwich or whatever. So yeah, I'm with you. My daily cutting needs tend to be few, however, on the weekends where I might break down that stack of Amazon boxes or use a current favorite for food prep use, something like that, I always enjoy those times.

I sometimes rotate a knife out. But always have one for my job. There is a spare cold steel in my EDC bag for loaning out or for really tough tasks when I don't want to damage the edge on a harder steel.
Typically I run a PM2 these days. The current favorite is the Rex 45 and the S45VN flavor. Some days I don't cut anything other days I use it quite often.
And I always have a flashlight. I use that daily. 20220510_082116.jpg

I carry the following tools a knife, light and pistol. I use the light every day. Knife gets used just about every day. I hope to never have to use the pistol.

You don't realize how often you need these until you start carrying them. Soon you can't live without them!

I use my knives every day for consistent purposes. If an unusual task pops up that requires something more serious: that's what the large pile of knives is for!
