This is a current manufacture, entry level kitchen knife, made in Japan. I don't think we can call it a santoku since it has a double bevel. It is probably typical of what a young student or single person might use. The steel is AUS-8, clad in something the vendor didn't specify. The spine is 0.072" thick at the heel, and it weighs 115 grams. The balance point is about 1/2" in front of the heel.

The handle is magnolia, the ferrule is plastic. The handle was not sealed, so I dyed it blue and finished it with ten coats of a poly-oil drying blend. The ferrule had a bright shine so I knocked that off with micro-mesh. I'll finish it off with Ren Wax in another few days.

It is a lot of fun getting used to the wa handle, light weight, and forward balance of this little guy. It will make cooking a little more interesting for a bit while I learn how to use the blade. Very efficient, very effective. With a little practice you can get a smooth, gliding motion going, and this thin blade will slice noticeably better than a thicker blade. A lot of folks won't care for the light weight, and this blade is not going to handle lateral pressure like a thicker blade.

It was about $85US shipped from Japan to San Diego, CA, USA. I think $26 or so was shipping. The VG-10 version for a few dollars more has a finished handle with a buffalo horn ferrule and it qualifies for free shipping. Not always in stock.

The three OTFs on the top: a Gen.III Combat Troodon, OD Green with Apocalyptic blade finish, a Combat Troodon Bounty Hunter with plain edge tanto, and a UTX-85 in blue with a black, partially-serrated tanto blade. I have a UTX-70 and an Ultratech Bounty Hunter en route! 😀

The three side-openers have been with me for several years. I love 'em all!

(The nap on the terrycloth towel makes it look like there's something on the blades of the two Troodons. It's just shadow.)

Back in March, I received my Griffin Scout F3.5. It was my first experience with a Griffin knife and it's been very good. I wasn't able to participate in the recent release of the X Series, but fortunately they are still available. I received my stonewashed/burgundy carbon fiber version of the X Series this week. What a contrast in designs, but I like them both.

My latest acquisition was a new Microtech UTX-70 with a black, partially serrated single edge blade and a blue chassis. I was hesitant to buy a UTX-70 as it is a lot of money for a tiny knife, but I finally pulled the trigger and ordered one from PVK.

It arrived today. Out of the box, it failed to fire after three or four activations. This had also happened to one of my other Microtech OTFs, but a little flushing with Hornaday One-Shot solvent/dry lube straightened it right out. I tried that on the little UTX-70 and it then worked properly for a few cycles before it failed completely. It feels like the spring broke or disconnected. 😟

I submitted a warranty repair ticket to Microtech and am waiting for their response. I did get an return e-mail almost immediately asking me to create an online account with them. And when I did, I can find my ticket and see that it now has a ticket number but also says "being processed." I don't know if I should send it back now or if I have to wait to hear from them before mailing it back... I'll call them tomorrow.

Dude. That totally sucks. Talk about disappointment

From what Ive heard microtech are great when it comes to warranty. Otf springs do fail from time to time. It does suck that it happened on a newly purchased one. What was the year on the model? It may have sat for awhile.

2022

It's in the mail on its way back to Microtech. They should have it by 8/19/24.

Case Trapper. Harvest Orange Jigged Bone. Case seems to have stepped up their game lately. This is like others I've gotten in the last couple months. Sharp. Centered. No gaps. Nice W&T. Flush bolster transitions. No proud pins.

I really like the harvest orange bone. I wish they would do a 6375 pattern stockman in it. Yours looks like it’s well done and the tip on the clip point comes to a nice point. The last couple of Case knives I’ve bought have had good fit and finish as well. Maybe the SOB killjoy that was rounding off all their tips finally retired.
