This could be my last knife ever. No really. Yes, I just received a Buck Range Elite earlier this week, upon which I was almost immediately reminded why I donāt usually carry any of my other thumbstud crossbar locks - theyāre nice, but theyāre neither my favorite nor most comfortable to use. I may carry that Range on special occasions, but not regularly. It was time to end the compromises and list all the boxes I want checked for a true daily carry.
After buying and trying many other configurations and blade shapes, I came to the conclusion that I want:
- drop point blade with more than just a hint of drop, like almost a modified wharncliffe - thatās what works best for the majority of my cutting
- blade length of 3 1/8ā - 3 1/4ā is the sweet spot
- handle length of 4 1/4ā - 4 1/2ā
- handle material - anything but plastic
- weight less than 4 oz
- lock type - liner lock
- deployment - unassisted flipper
I searched long and hard (heh-heh, he said long ⦠and hard) for this combination of specs and finally stumbled on this QSP Hawk. āSettledā for the modest 14C28N steel, because thatās all I really need. Went with black micarta (yes, itās officially called black), because I donāt have any other micarta knives, and I liked the look of this one. I had also looked at the Bestech Beluga, which also checked all the boxes, but itās out if stock everywhere, possibly discontinued, so here we are with my first QSP. And now upon having it in my hands, itās a damn nice knife. Action out of the box is fluid and smooth; lock is solid and easily released. Size, weight and handle shape are all perfect for me. This could be my ideal EDC. Though I couldnāt swear that I wonāt be keeping an eye out for that blue & black handled Beluga.
