I do still enjoy many of my budget knives, but it depends on what you consider budget knives.

tl;dr

I can really enjoy my budget $40 Kubey Royal in Jade G10, or $75 Kizer Laconico Gemini in Micarta a lot. Many people consider less than $75-100 a budget knife. But, with $300-800 knives becoming more common, and custom knives going for $1000-$5000 and more, I think the $100-150 range (or even $200) is a common place these days. Some people would consider those in the budget category, when compared to the high end knives over $1000-$1500 that are getting more popular.

For me, something new or interesting in the $30-100 range can still be a lot of fun to collect and play with - things like the Civivi Bull Tusk or Kubey Royal in G10, Remette Rhino, or Migeron Talism and Moyarl, or QSP Penguin and Terzuola ACTF Lite, and many Spydercos are fun to deploy and use; and they all fit in the budget category.

I'm carrying my new Kubey Tityus today - that looks a lot like a Koenig Arius for a fraction of the price at $125; and the fit and finish and action feels like 2-3 times more knife than I paid for. I am soooo very impressed with it, despite a 14C28N blade, instead of 154CM or S35VN. I may carry my Kubey Nova or Kubey Royal in flamed Ti, in the $125 - $170 range, as my second knife for dirty or hard work; while I save my higher-end knife in the back pocket for light duty or cutting clean stuff like food (Herman, CRK, Hinderer, Spartan, Shirogorov, etc). Compared to some of my other knives, I'd almost consider these budget knives too.

I do have a propensity to gravitate towards Titanium frame or CF liner locks, and there is a plethora of those in the $100-200 range now; so it doesn't all have to be Hinderer, CRK, Shirgorov, or Spartan, etc at 2-4x the cost, or a Herman and Shirogorov at double the cost of those higher ups. Knives under $200 seem to be a sweet spot for me - such as the Kubey Tityus and Nova, or Kubey Royal in M390 and Ti (not the D2/G10), the Kizer Sparrow, Vosteed Dachshund, Artisan Cutlery Satyr and Boa, Maxace Black Mirror and Raccoon Dog, TRM Neutron 2, Spyderco Para 3 or PM2, etc. are all great knives in that mid/low-range price territory.

At this point I could be a very happy guy without ever spending more than $200-300 max on a knife again. But I find that many of the $30-80 knives that I buy (to try out and play with) end up going away as gifts to friends and family; or they sometimes get returned for a refund to apply towards something better.

SO, I NEED TO FOCUS ON ONES THAT I CAN ACTUALLY FIT INTO MY ROTATION, and with only so many days in the year, as more come in then more will have to go away. If I stopped buying those $30 to $80 knives, then for every 3-4 that I don't buy then I could get 1 much higher quality knife in its place. I think that's where I need to go, because right now it would take me over a year to carry each knife I own IF I rotated them out every single day.

Very well said, I should have clarified what I meant by budget. The prices have come up and $3-500 for a maker production or high end Chinese knive is common these days. There are some crazy options there now that 2 yeats ago didn’t exist. It’s certinally a great time to be a knife guy!

I played with it yesterday and been carrying it today and flipping it. Comes out of the front pocket easy and flips with flipper, thumb, or spydie flip first finger. Very easy to deploy all three methods. This one is very thin behind the edge and don’t need no stropping. Had to snug the pivot down and blade is solid and flips like a champ.5 starIMG_2264.jpeg

I've used my signature SDFK for quite a few tasks, including processing big game, and I haven't found anything to be lacking. I never catch myself thinking, "I wish I had xyz with me". It's definitely one of my all-time favorites. If I were only allowed to take a single knife, it would probably be that one.

DocJekl DocJekl and I have been back and forth on many knives over the past few months, he sends, I lanyard and return as something wasn't just my type, so he has made a lot of attempts to find just the right one, it's a tough call to be sure. But this one may be the one that will stick around, handle thickness, blade length and thickness all work towards things I am liking lately, that plus a hidden lanyard pin doesn't hurt ;)
