Due to many requests, here are some new pics and thoughts on how the JEB EVO handled this weekend. I thought it best to break the EVO discussion from the original 'Tracker' thread as it definately is getting off topic and seems to be developing a strong following of it's own.

I used the EVO for many tasks from gutting Trout (yes, large but it did the job...:)...and being in the 6.5" category, it handled the job no different to similar knives), to generalised chopping and snare work. They say a picture is worth 1000 words, I think they are right. To answer a few questions, the front hatchet edge chops with ease while the rear scolloped section completed the finer work on my snare poles with surprising precision (the shape actually seemed to aid the course of the cutting and within the cutting area).

The method or technique that I found was needed to achieve a solid and managable chopping action did take a couple of goes, but when I found that 'sweet spot', the EVO's chopping ability simply amazed me with similar performance to that of longer straight styled blades. What an awesome chopper.

The handle as I have said before, is extremely comfortable! I love it.

This is no means a review, I am just trying to elaborate on a few questions recieved via email. So, who of you lucky bastids has one on order?...cos you aint gettin mine!!!

Frankly, this is one ugly knife. However, I know from experience that some ugly knives have amazing qualities. This must be one of those.

Nice pictures. :)

Hi there. I was in contact with Mr. Jensen for awhile and inquired about getting the smaller version of this. He never got back to me about how it went with testing the prototype. Any word on what is going on with that project? Thanks.

What the!!?? Now it is showing? Oh well....Hey, I like that spec ops! You have lay away right? ;)

Whos is the other EVO original?

I'm starting to like these knives more and more.
Coupla questions though.
What steel is used?
What's the hole in the blade used for?
Are these things Chisel ground?
How good are the serrations on top of the blade for rope cutting?
The cuts on the handle towards the rear (top and bottom) I assume they are for traction. Do they irritate the hand during extensive chopping?
Finally, the exposed tang at the rear of the knife, can it be used as a hammer or is it not shaped for that?
Thanks,
Lenny

Gundy,

I have some questions for you about the EVO.

What are the advantages of this blade design over a more regular blade shape? In particular, how well does it slice compared to your similar sized Busses? How well does it chop compared to them? How dextrously does it handle, compared to them?

Also, does the pointiness of the guard at the front of the handle ever cause any problems? Would those traction grooves in the top front part of the handles be too harsh for my soft girly hands?

Thanks,

Mike

Evolute, here ya go...

This is a completely different beast than a Busse or similar designed knife. It is not really a slicer as most straight knives are, more of a chopper utilizing the front hatchet portion of the design - it works very well! The scollop works additionally well as a 'draw knife' sort of device (is that what you call it?), keeping that sort of task centralised within that area.

You would need the appropriate knife to use as a slicer, although the EVO would do it, it would not do it as well as a smaller companion or straight styled knife. The feel of this knife is totally different to say a Busse, Randall or similar knife. I guess all knives are, but once I got use to it, I could handle it the way that was needed to achieve the job.

The guard never caused any problems. I used this knife choked up a lot so it really helped lock my hand in. It looks 'pointier' than what it really is. It is actually quite wide.

The traction grooves are very large compared to some styles and they are very comfortable and rounded. We all have different types of girlie hands but I have never even thought of them as a problem, so NO, I doubt that they would cause any dramas...:)

Damn Mike! You made me work for that!

Remember though, it is my belief that with any knife, you need to learn how to best use it's characteristics in design to be efficient with it! This knife was easy to use once we understood each other! The learning experience is always fun however! ;)
