EVOlution Survival knife...

Can we get a close up of the serrations on the regular knife? (like Gundy's) I am interested in how they would cut rope, webbing ect. I am hoping to get more traditional serrations on mine, but I guess I need all the info first;)

Alph....serrations are varied and all work differently. The ones on my knife work fine for cutting taught webbing, I must try it on rope but in my mind, the sharp edge is always better for cutting rope. They 'notch' okay but not as good as say the SAK variety. Peter does some awesome serrations similar to that on his spec ops above and if I had my turn again, I would get this type as an all rounder! I always carry a Leatherman or SAK now as a companion, so probably would not use the serrations on the EVO at all. It does work well on plastic however!

Coupla questions though.
What steel is used?
What's the hole in the blade used for?
Are these things Chisel ground?
How good are the serrations on top of the blade for rope cutting?
The cuts on the handle towards the rear (top and bottom) I assume they are for traction. Do they irritate the hand during extensive chopping?
Finally, the exposed tang at the rear of the knife, can it be used as a hammer or is it not shaped for that?
Thanks,
Lenny

Man, I am answering all these questions and I missed you Lenny! Sorry mate.

- I had mine made from ATS34, I think this or D2 would work fine.
- The hole can be used to aid with compass work, although I had it drilled for use with lashing.
- Mine is Chisel ground (Australian Chisel), not sure if Peter offers V ground versions. I wanted chisel for more of a working knife, I must admit, I can not imeediately find any difference in the outcomes of both. They all cut. I thought during chopping that it may 'deflect' to one side, but it did not.
- Again, I would go for the serration types as on the spec ops (at left in peters pic above) or maybe even a sharpened top edge...Peter, can you do the same as on the SAK saws? I guess it would really add to cost however?
- All traction grooves did not irritate at all. They allowed for a very posotive grip.
- My exposed tang is tapered into a chisel fassion. For prying, scraping etc etc. Most fighters have the same item but sharpened. Mine has about a 2mm odd flat at the end. I am sure you could get a squared off version to aid in hammering, I hammered in tent pegs last weekend with the flat side of the knife.

forgot to add! That scolloped section was ideal for easily opening freshwater muscles! :) Or any similar molusc for that matter...

Thanks for being such a help Gundy. You need a free knife or something;). I like the thought of just the sharpened top edge instead of serrations. I'll have to stew on that one a little while. I didn't know that D2 was an option. I really don't know much about D2, but I do believe that ATS-34 is a very under rated steel, and I have gotton great performance from all my knives with ATS-34. I am very excited about this knife. I plan on keeping it in my "travel bag" so that I can always have it near me. I don't believe in going too far from home without a good knife and a way to make fire. I will probably use the Gundy gecko as a necker. You do your friend a great service by answering so many question and posting pics. Thanks a bunch!:D

A free knife! Here that Peter? One of those spec ops bowies will do!:D ;)

Actually, I always felt guilty becuase all and any knives I bought were always from USA makers - especially Busse, never from local guys and Australia has some fantastic makers!

I knew Peter from my Emerson links and the EVO thing sort of grew from an enquiry. When I recieved the knife, it was exactly what I was after in that sort of thing. I agree with ATS34, if treated right, it is great! I have had some rippers that I could not sharpen no matter what I did! In my opinion, they need to be treated right.

I only answer questions as I am truly happy with the knife. But, if Peter would like to put me onto his payroll, I would be happy to hear the terms! ;) Mwahahahahahha...

Hey, I made an assumption about the availaility of D2, I could be wrong!

When are we going to start an EVO forum up! LOL!

I would love an EVO or Jensen Elite forum.;) I guess you do have a point on the heat treat issue. All I know about heat treating is that it can truly make or break a knife(no pun intended) I know you are happy with your blade, do have any info on heat treat that you can share? Like the RC hardness and who does it etc.? No big thing if you don't. You are obviously very happy with it AND have used it too (as opposed to just looking at it). That alone speaks volumes in my book. I just ask because I'm nosey:rolleyes: :D and I LOVE asking questions(bet you could have never figured that out:rolleyes: :D ) Thanks bud, and good luck on the payroll thing:eek: :D

some closeups as requested...sorry for the grubby knife, I should have bathed it first...;) :p

A very comfortable way to hold the EVO.

Well, I was about to get some zzzzzzzz (1am here) and I was just sent this little teaser. I hope I was allowed to post it! Too bad if no, too tired.

I guess this beast is ready for a Tak-Blast and sharpen, followed by kydex??? :D

Very nice Peter, I really like this variation of the EVO design.

Thanks for the great pics Gundy. What model of camera do you use? I have a sony 2.1 megapixel but I can never get my pics to look good. The pics show what appears to be VERY VERY high level of craftsmanship. I can't wait to get mine on order. I'm getting closer and closer, hopefully just a few more weeks and then I can start waiting again:D :D

Sony is the only way to go my man! I have a 3.2 MPX Sony. Going to go a 5 MPX before Christmas.....macro is the secret, macro.....;)

Well, the more megapixels would make some difference. If I am ever going to try to use the macros function, I'll have to get that dang book back out.:o  I just point, shoot, transfer. BTW if I'm not broke when you get a new camera, I might could help "offset" the cost of a new rig for ya! warning....I seem to be "saving" for something all the time:o :D

No problems Alph..;)

All you would need to do is ad a power converter and away you go! Same as our dunnies, everything is different over here...:)

Crap! I forget that things are different over(under) there. Now I just feel silly:footinmou :D

Sent Peter an e-mail to see if he can do the two sided grind on these pups. Hope so, he's already said he can make all the other adjustments I asked for so we'll see. Was waiting on some CPM S30V stainless that he was going to make it out of but ran into a snag on getting it and I'm tiered of waiting so I think I'll just get it in ATS34. What do you guys think? Should I wait for the CPM S30V or just go with the ATS34? Thanks.

The only S30V knife I have is a new sebenza I got for my b-day in Late Jan. I haven't got to use it too much, but I did some. I was upgrading our home network hub, with a hub/router for the cable modem. I had used the really heavy duty zip ties to hold my cables together.(It was the only ones I had) Well, the time came to cut it and I was leaning over my desk reaching at an odd angle and I had to use a LOT of pressure because they are some damn thick. Well, the knife slipped off several times and hit the wall full force. 5 or 6 times and I do mean HARD! I finally got in a better position and cut it like butter, but the point is, I slammed it into the wall several times, edge first and there is no dulling or deformation of any kind. I was really impressed. How long is the wait on the S30V? Also, I have heard that heat treatment is very important on s30v and that not every maker understandes the differences.(me either  ,but I don't make 'em, I just beat on 'em) All that being said, I am planning on getting mine in ATS-34 because thats all I thought was available. As stated in a previous post, I think ATS34 is under rated and I have been very very happy with my ATS34 blades. Let us know what you decide. Hopefully others will chime in as well. If you don't mind, shoot me an e-mail and tell me the price difference in the steels, but I will probably do ats34 anyway. Hope this helps, but I bet it didn't  :D
