Excitement in a box !!

Good for you. KMG is the way to go. The minute you hold a piece of steel against it your knives will get better.

Have fun, post pics, and be careful with that lectric.

Lamontjb- I did paint my tool arms grey so they still knida look like bare metal

Shawnfu- Heck yeah man !!! Congrat to you also. No question there will be no regrets over the KMG purchase.

PJ 234- Yeah thats a tough one. I was thinking about waiting a little longer and getting the small wheel attachment and a few wheels to go with it but I couldn't take the waiting any longer but it will be comming eventually. I already feel lucky to be starting out with such fine equipment with the 10" package.

Fiddleback- There will definately be pics comming in the near future. Good Bad or Ugly, there will be pics ! I dig your knives by the way with the laminated wood handles. No worries about running the electric.

Now out to the garage to build my new baby a home :D

Josh, if I may ask, about how much was the freight for your order? If this isn't appropriate to post on the boards, please feel free to PM or email the info to me.

Thanks!

Josh, have you picked the color for it yet? :D

Patrice

You painted your grinder? That is teh ghey.

It is supposed to be brown and rusty, like mine...

I'm a big fan of a natural patina on my tools, so everything gets doused with WD-40 liberally, and slowly gets naturally 'browned' over the years =)

Finished my hunny-do list this morning and went shopping for lumber and wiring supplies so didn't really get productive till late this afternoon. Really enjoyed building this grinder bench. It's fairly stout but my baby's got to have a good home. Benchtop dimensions are 51"x24" and 33 1/2" from the floor. Plenty of room left for a variable speed disc sander in the future :D. Not included in these pics, but also built my redneck NEMA 4 enclosure today.
Gotta get a few things tomorrow to attach the air filters and a larger project box for speed pot and FWD/STOP/REV switch. Still debating as to mounting my motor on top or underneath the bench. Guess I'll decide tomorrow.
I was also thinking about adding some shelving underneath for storage of steel and belts not yet in use. Any thoughts , good idea, bad idea ???
Shouldn't have any problem getting everything bolted down and wired up tomorrow. I'll just be waiting for the pulleys to arrive Monday and she'll be singin her song ! :D

I'd gladly listen to anyones ideas for improvement on design, layout , or suggestions as to how to make best use of the space under the bench. Thanks -Josh

I mounted it underneath myself, very happy I did. As for the shelving, it is going to get dirty under there so I would say steel ok but maybe not belts.

You are well on your way to a nice setup there.

Patrice

Yes, I was wondering about contaminating new belts with grinding dust. Good point. Maybe i"ll wrap the underneath with thin plywood and make it more like a cabinet with double doors. No rush on that part just brainstorming and thanks for the input -Josh

Amen Dave,
If we don't get together again very soon I'll be pestering ya some more only this time it'll be... I've got these blades here made from O1 what do I do now !!!! Waaaaa help me help me LOL.

I keep all my attachments on a shelf under my bench. Works okay, though I would have been better off building two shelves - one closer to the surface of the bench for the attachments. That might not work if you put the motor underneath, which sounds like a good idea to me. But definitely a shelf or two under there. I hang my belts on a pegboard above the bench. You built a nice one!

I'm with Dave though - that place is way too clean. ;)

You have some nice stuff. Can't wait to see the knives coming out of there.

Do you mean all your machinery is brown and rusted.
I am so sorry. Give me a hug maybe you'll catch teh ghey. :p;)

Patrice

Oh yeah man. I do have one mill that's all big and black and manly, and it doesn't have a spot of paint on it.

It's just been rusting for 50 years...

Sadly, I'm not kidding....

Ddavelarson,
Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to go with motor under the bench for sure and have a couple of ideas for tool arm storage topside. Even with motor mounted under I'll still have plenty of room for a couple shelves. As far as the place being to clean, I swept out that corner so I could get good pics. Just don't turn around and look at the other side of the garage !

To all who have taken the time to read and be involved in this thread,

My KMG install project has come to a close with final installation taking place this afternoon :D I did end up going with an under bench motor mount which really gives a nice clean finished look to the bench and grinder plus frees up quite a bit of extra space on top. Everything went very smoothly from running the electric to building the bench and mounting the grinder. She is up and running without problems :D Just want to send out some thanks to everyone for their input and encouragement and to all those before me who posted questions and answers reguarding the install and operation of the Teco FM50 motor controller.
Now I'm just waiting on the belts I ordered to get me started. I do however have a 36grit belt I bought many months ago when considering building a home made grinder so I had to throw it on and grind 3 knife like objects from large paint stirring sticks.
Tomorrow I'll post some pics of the end result of this intallation:D
