Expensive Knives - Do you use them?

The most coolest and expensive knife I could afford as a college freshman was a Buck/Strider 880 folder @ $140. This was in late 2000.

I'll admit, there's 100 posts here already and I didn't read them all. The most expensive knife I own is a large sebenza with snakewood inlays. I think I paid $510 for it. The weird thing is that I feel more comfortable using it than I do a couple of customs which cost much less. I think that has to do with the fact that the customs aren't readily replaceable. Otherwise, I personally think that knives were made to be used. I don't buy bejeweled William Henry's, although I do have and use a WH E6. Price of knives is relative. The more you can afford, the more you'll buy. There was a time in my life where I wouldn't have used any knife that was over $50.

The value of a particular knife has nothing to do with the amount spent when you factor in the friendship you have built with the maker during the order.

I've used every knife I own, but some are used harder than others. The moderately expensive ones (175-250) see the most use, with an exception or two for specialty purposes (i.e. choppers).

Will you post a picture of said knife?

Wow, indeed! That sure is a knife.

When I was in college, I was still using SAKs and closing them regularly on my fingers. Ouch!

I just posted this pic in another thread, this is today's EDC, an SMF.

But it's all relative to what you have, what you can afford, and what you need. Now, those SAKs were crappy, but a nice Kershaw or Benchmade is all you really need, right?

When I was a college student I didn't have much money either. I used a Kershaw version of the Buck 110 for an EDC and a K-Bar USMC as a "camp knife". The Kershaw went on everything from day hikes to whitewater rafting trips to SERE school. My advice is get the best knife you can and use the hell out of it.

I still have the Kershaw 25 years later, and it is sharp enough to shave with...not that I've tried that stunt. :)

I carry a Yellowhorse folder ( finished myself, very inexpensive $10 blank frame/blade), as well as a random pattern damascus fixed blade ( about $75, also finished from a blank) almost every day.

I carry a raindrop damascus wsk ( about $200) when hiking/camping as a primary bushcraft knife.
It was more of a blind impulse buy on a hit-or-miss one off knife that turned out to be a damn fine blade.

The only blades I own that do not see use are my hand forged Katanas.
They are fully functional, but all the neighboring Shoguns have been pretty cool lately, so no need to actually use them.

Just bumping this thread.
The most expensive knife I have is a plain Jane large sebenza. Next is a ZT 560. I've used and carried both and I will admit, they are both incredible knives. Are they worth it? That's a relative question with a relative answer. For me, the answer is no so I'm going to sell them. Not because I don't think they are worth the money, but because I ve realized I could use that money for purposes, dare I say, other than my knife collection. I really enjoy traveling, and $400 is a substantial amount of a ticket to Europe or Asia, and to me that's a much deeper life experience than simply owning and carrying a knife. After some serious vision-quests, I've determined my max for all future knives will be about $125. I've based that on whether or not I would replace a lost blade.
