Expensive Knives - Do you use them?

I'd like to pursue this matter with a slightly modified question: Do you use your one-of-a-kind, handmade, custom folders? In other words, a knife that cannot be duplicated by simply purchasing another of the same model. Thanks.

I do. I have a Demko custom version of the Espada that is marked 1 of 1. It gets lots of use.

When I first got into knives I would baby them and only open envelopes and cut light stuff. I didn't want to damage the factory edge. Over time I learned to sharpen knives and started using them. My most expensive folder is the CS Hatamoto. Sure the mirror polished finish and the bolsters are scratched, but it only gives it more character.

I use em all, though I don't have that many. I've spent about 450 between these two knives and I see no reason to baby them. I have a guitar that cost $5k and it has belt buckle scratches on the back now.

Get your money's worth. Take the plastic off the screen of your electronics too. That drives me nuts.

All of mine get used!

Even knives that are one off's like the top custom:

Or production like the 511. It definitely gets used (and abused :D)...

Expensive is a relative term; I've spent $750 combined this month on knives (it truly hurts to say that ), however, that was for five knives.

I could've had a suh-weet custom for that much coin in one big purchase. I may need to re-think my purchasing habits!

That's what I bought them for. It seems a waste to spend $400-600 on an knife and leave it in the safe. Right now I have a Hinderer in one pocket and a Sebenza in another.

It's interesting that a similar question comes up with regard to watches too. I know some who own Rolex watches but wear "homage" watches that look the same, for fear of ruining the expensive watch.

I don't have many expensive knives, the most expensive was around $90, but like my watches I use them all.

There is a term that comes up with regard to wear and age called wabi-sabi, or just wabi. Supposedly it is a Japanese saying that means something like perfect imperfection. As an item gets used by its owner it gets better. So patina, scuffs, scratches and wear are all wabi, and make the knife more of a reflection of its owner.

Cool.

A lot of truth in that wabi concept (no idea if you just made that up or not, but don't care. ).

I have a SAK that my parents bought for me while they were in England. I was 8 or 9 at the time. I was afraid to lose it or "ruin" it for the longest time. About two years ago I tied a lanyard on it and started throwing it in my pocket every once in a whole, and it's only now that it has scratches and scrapes that I really love it and consider it irreplaceable.

The next question I would have is "What do you call use?". Are you cutting string and opening boxes in the office, or is it hard use?

Yep use em all bought a t latch bm 42 cause balis are great for hard use and a hell of a lot of fun to flip (thanks to aflatfoot!) knives are tools and tools are meant to be used

yup! I spent well over 300$ for a spankin' new sebenza 21. I admit I did baby it for a while because I was anticipating that dreaded first scratch. But it's been in my pocket ever since and I enjoy using it. She's a lil' more scratched up now and I think it adds to the knife.

I don't buy knives just for a chance to sell them later.

I get enjoyment using knives. I don't get enjoyment knowing that they are sitting in a box somewhere at home.

I use all three in the picture.
My tasks aren't that demanding.
Your typical edc chores, cardboard, plastic, food, and the occasional odd ball situations I find my knives useful in.

I found that I too am happiest when I'm using the knives I own.
If I come across a knife in my collection that isn't being used due to price, I know it's time to pass it on.

I have three customs on the way and I intend on carrying/using all of them. Plus a Strider SMF Alum that I intend on beating the crap out of. Knives are tools, and intended to be used as such. I don't see many people buying angle grinders and putting them in display cases ;)

I have the ZT 0561 on preorder. If and or when it arrives, it'll be...by far, the most I've ever spent on a knife. I'm wondering this very question. I'm sure it'll work great, but any value that it may have later would be negated from use. It may get carried from time to time, but the Case, CRKT and Spydie get to do "work".

im am definetly not afraid to use my benchmade bone collector wich was about $120 when I purchased it.
Hell when you buy more expensive knives, there usualy more expensive because they perform better, so it would be a waist not to use them.

I'm a college student as well, and $80 is almost ridiculous at the moment. However, any knifes I have or that I am going to have will all be used, regardless of price.
