Extreme Build Off Challenge

A BF member has brought to my attention that the lanyard hole in the front guard of my knife is actually a registered trademark of Busse. I would like to appoligize in public for unknowingly drilling that hole. Should this knife survive Brian's torture tests I plan on putting a copper pin in that front hole and peening it over on both sides.

It is my understanding as long as you do not sell the knife you are not violating it, in other words if you make that model again for sale omit the hole

So...disappointing...don't know what to say. Resale value of all your "work" just plummeted. Oh well, there goes my retirement!

Maybe the ZFUX is OK since the thong hole is further away from the edge of the guard:confused:
I PM'd Jerry and waiting to hear back...

Go ahead and shoot my knife Brian:thumbup: I'm expecting some edge damage to that knife when it come time to chop cinder blocks, the edge is ground thin compared to some of the other entries. However, it did stand up well to chopping brass rod and moose antler.

Tagged. I want to see the results of these. I want the that knife that Justin made, and I would sell my soul for a knife from Rick, sorry to say its not worth much anymore.

I think you are okay on the challange knife, Bruce. Busse will probably tell you how nice your knife looks and politely ask if you could refrain from using the hole in the future.

Trademark - really? Bruce, make it slightly oval and you are likely good. I believe anything that is not design but potential functional should not be able to become a trademark anyway. That is like trademarking a hollow ground, a handle thickness, a specific heat treatment etc. At the end, people know where good knives come from!!

Bruce, just my .02 but when I look at your knife, I don't think of a Busse at all. Good on you for stepping up though! Yours has double forward holes... I'm assuming for lashing, lanyard, whatever. So does the Team Gemini of Busse and many many other knives from
countless makers/ manufacturers. If trademark infringement were the case, all
these guys would be in trouble. I'd be anxious to see what Jerry says (and I
don't know him personally) but I seriously doubt he's concerned about it in
terms of stealing his design or losing sales. Like Rick said, he'll
hopefully commend you on a great looking blade and thank you for taking the whole thing into consideration.

Bruce,
I agree with the others, that screams "chute knife" pattern. Been around quite a long time.

Bill

Bruce... as long as the hole isn't installed into the guard portion, you are okay.

This was Busse's response from another thread where a trademark infringement was in question...
Not entirely correct. If the hole can be moved up and out of the guard area and still maintain the functionality of the accessory, then the trademark stands.
Your challenge blade is fine... the other one might be on the naughty list.
