Extreme "Hard Use " Folders vs Fixed for same purposes . Pros , Cons , and Personal Preference .

Strictly my own opinion, but I believe that fixed-blades (full-tang) offer superior strength, when afield, or in combat. Heavy-duty folders are a substitute-standard, and most have overcome the weakness of the pivot-lock, inherent in the design. Folders are more concealable, and therefore city-friendly. Ergonomics can be equal in both cases, depending on the design characteristics. Personally, I have never felt under-knifed when carrying a folder. Most of the larger Cold Steels have negated this argument. Others opine, that if your opting for a large, heavy, folder; then you might-as-well sport, a full-blade. There is some merit in this argument. A heavy, folder just makes more sense, in my suburban lifestyle.
Thank you for saying this so perfectly. My thoughts exactly.

I like folders and I like fixed blades. What I use and carry depends on the area and what I want to EDC that day.

Is there a reason they have to?
None whatsoever !

But , there are knives I strongly don't prefer and don't choose to own or carry .

I don't habitually seek out subforum areas or threads that feature these knives to disrespect them and those that love them .

This thread seems about as fruitful as the listed behavior.

Agreed. And if one feels they shouldn't, can't, won't, doesn't want to, or doesn't need to compromise, it doesn't mean they're prejudiced against the new trend that is the hard use folder!
Of course not .

I'm not trying to dictate what anyone else should carry or not carry .

Or what category knife they should feel free to discuss without harassment .

We all have different needs and interests . That's a good thing , IMO . :)

It seem like you get the sense your style of knife carry is being persecuted here when in actuality this is a knife forum where opinions are shared during discourse that you don't agree with. I'm sorry, but whenever the topic of the hard use folder comes up, there are going to be plenty of people who say "I'd use a fixed blade". Even a mod, in the last thread that prompted this one. said that very thing, along with several other people.

You must admit that over the years you get in a jab or two unprovoked about the cold steel tri-ad lock, even unprovoked. You wouldn't be you without sharing what you like ;) 😁

What does this have to do with the topic of the thread?

Has a member disrespected your beloved Tri-Ad lock in a different thread and you felt the need to start this thread in response?

I added bold to emphasis the main objective for people that seek out to criticize.

Remember what you told me about “filtering out the noise”? ;)

Fixed blade knives typically have a much more comfortable handle than a folder. And they are undeniably stronger. A bigger fixed blade than a comfortably carried folder is always an option, not hard to find or carry. To name three reasons why for hard use a fixed blade knife beats a folder ten times out of ten.

What can I say that wouldn't be wrong ...somehow ?

IMO, overbuilt folders lose their convenience/carry ability in direct proportion to their ability to replace a fixed blade for "extreme hard use". I own a few overbuilt folders but I rarely carry them for this reason. Maybe I just haven't found the right one yet.

I think this topic tends to get contentious because there is a certain element who gravitate toward over-built knives that can't resist making extreme statements about how much better they are than everything else. Less extreme/all or nothing type statements would probably lead to a lot more amicable discussions.

Curious, what does the term "EDC" mean in that statement ("... to EDC that day.") ?

For last couple decades ED = Everyday + C = Carry
(for the last few years though ... :-/ ?? ).

Fixed blade use and carry, for me, usually has to do with ease of cleanup. Hunting and fishing, a fixed blade is easily wiped mostly clean on some snow or grass. In my metal fab shop, a fixed blade does not fill with grease and chips. It is rare I need the strenth a fixed blade provides over a folder. In fact, unless I am specifically doing something unnecessary like batonning, i cannot think of the last time i needed a knife to be super strong.

EDIT: Reply is to Spey.
Yes sir. To EDC that day. I should not use the word EDC in improper context and apologize for any misunderstandings caused by myself.
I just carry whatever I want for the day.
EDIT: I generally have 7 folders I rotate through one day each for a 7 day period. On some occasions I will add a fixed blade. I guess I should call it once a week carry from a choice of 7 folders along with a fixed blade roughly once or twice a week.

To be fair , no more than gravitate towards fixed blades exclusively .

I personally feel like there's plenty of room in the world for both .

Why can't we all just get along ? ;)
