Think about what you are saying…. You are saying a fixed piece (of whatever material) is weaker than 2 pieces of said material joined together with a mechanical, movable joint. It’s not quantum physics…. It’s basic physics
Really?

Let me think here… how about a spyderco street Bowie. In a baton test, you really think the street Bowie would outlast the 4max?

I guess you do.. because “physics”.

I’m not bashing the Cold Steel. I like them. I don’t care for Mr. Thompson’s way of doing things, but okay.

I think we are all friends here. If we met on the street we would all go have a beer and talk about knives. I know you would agree.

I think the key to this is the term “hard use” and what it entails, fixed blade is better. Now if you mean using folders for tough jobs that are not beyond their limits, than of course folders are useful, but fixed blades have an advantage, the key is using the right tool for the job. I hear my dad saying the same thing from years ago.

It doesn‘t matter if they deform. The 4max will hold its own against tough fixed blades, and it’s stronger than many (rat tail tangs for example).

I don’t know why this turned into a 4max bashing session, the knife is solid and tough. I didn’t disrespect fixed blades or laugh and mock them. Think about it: You’re all here arguing with me about why a fixed blade is stronger than a 4max, and criticizing the 4max. The 4max is stepping into the space of fixed blades and it would beat many of them… and you think just because you find the toughest fixed blade imaginable and it performs better Than the 4max that you’re “winning”?

No. That’s a loss already.
No it does not beat many of them. That is incorrect. Are you referring to kitchen knives?

Rmd's are 3/16 thick. Roughly .187 thou. FAR from the thickest or most durable knives. You are talking out of a lack of information, again.

Compare it to a fat ash or a mega mandu at .350 thou? Lol

The kabar or most other stick tangs will outlast the 4max in hard use easily.

The 4max can be pressed into SOME hard use temporarily at the risk of damaging it. Even stick tangs like kabars will outlast it and likely take no damage.

If I think my knife might see some hard use, then that means that my hands are going to get the same.

So I pick the most comfortable handle. My fixed blades have the most comfortable handles, since they have nothing to accommodate but my hand.

None of my folders qualify. I like them just fine, but using them hard would get uncomfortable to me.

Agreed. Folder handles are meh against fixed blade handles.

I believe the 4maxx is .190 s35vn

The Street Bowie is a fighting knife with a pointy tip - Blade Thickness 157"

Hang on a second here.. so you’re saying that the 4max isn’t stronger than ANY fixed blade? Interesting.

The title of this thread is to compare “hard use folders vs. hard use fixed blades.” Therefore you can only, for the sake of fairness, compare two blades that are considered “hard use.”

Of course the Max-4 will beat a full tang fillet knife. You can’t just pick and choose the weakest fixed and compare it to what you believe to be the strongest hard use folder.

Throwing up the yellow card!

Well, Well...
I bloody love BFs and even these small tiffs are relatively light compared to other forums.

The title was "Extreme "Hard Use " Folders vs Fixed for same purposes . Pros , Cons , and Personal Preference"

As a sheep rancher I would like to weigh in.
During the day I usually have a fixed blade on my belt. The knife stays on the belt until the pants get laundered. I.e, its there when the pants go on.
At any time during a 24hr period I might have to run outside and deal with some kind of issue. By the door I have a stout folder at the ready and gets used everyday. Granted I have the pin cranked down pretty tight so there are NO accidental openings. No wrist or finger-flipping here. LOL.

Main point is that you don't go out naked, even if you are just taking out the trash. Because more times than not, something pops up.

In the spirit of the OP there is my 2c.
Cheers.

That is exactly what he is doing. Except in his mind the 4max is tougher than stick tang fixed blades as well. 🤣

Imagine thinking the 4max is more durable than a kabar. Or a glock knife.

Just because a knife has a stick tang does not mean it won't hold up.

I think the correct term is “rat tail” tang. 🤣

Cold Steel became what it is because of him. Love him or hate him, we know “Cold Steel” because of his drive.

Not all of us are friends.

You have proof of this?

You also can’t pick the strongest fixed blade to take on the 4max. That’s a no brainer.

When it comes to being tough, I don't think a folding knife that is the equal of this full tang 3V Bark River ever has been made. Cannot see it but the blade is .170 thick. It really is quite a knife.

You have proof of this?
For the love of god.

Proof of what? That ratmandus are NOT the thickest most durable knives?

Or that a 4max can only handle "some" hard use temporarily?

Do you believe the 4max can handle ALL hard use? If not than you, too, agree with the word "some".

As for temporarily, the harduse it can handle that IS fixed blade territory, it can NOT handle consistently or 100% duty cycle lol you think you can baton it every day for years?
