F1 Survival vs. RC-4

Thanks for your help guys! I went with the F1. Hopefully it arrives before the Easter break so I can take it camping!

Congrats, I'm sure you will like your knife. Mick seems smitten with his falknivens.

The may cause a little stir and no offence intended to any RAT fans... but with the 3 RAT/ESEE knives I have owned I have always felt like I was using $100+ Old Hickory butcher knife with a micarta handle. I love 1095, but hey.

Not that I mind people not liking rats, but the comparison to a $15 Old Hickory is just way, way, way off. Lets try and be a little more objective there.

My $0.02.
I have both.

RC-4
Pros:
Carry system
Batoning
warranty

F1
Pros:
Handle - Less fatigue
Convex edge - A little easier to mantain in the field

I seem to like the F1 a little better. Subjective call.

I spent the extra money on a left handed hard plastic sheath. The leather one didn't take my fancy.

Good call on the F1. Mine has served me well and its a real slim package with the Zytel sheath. Its tough as nails and has a proven record.

Cant go wrong with the laminated VG10 and the convex edge. The fully covered tang is a plus for me, cos i live in the colder part of the world. Theres a load of threads on the Fallknivens pros. Look them up.

But the RC4 is a great knife too. In the end, i think you would have been fine with either. Comes down to personal preference. Dont think too much, just follow your gut.

agreed ,,good call on the f1 ,,have both ,,but i always go to my f1 first,,convex edge,a bit lighter too feels like it too me,plus i love leather sheaths,

I'm late on this one, but the F1 is an excellent choice.
Mine was laminated VG-10 and was an awesome cutter.
When my daughter became a Master Guide Instructor, I gave it to
her because she needed a good knife that wasn't going to fail her.

Would love to get another one.
The RC-4 I've never had, but I have an Izula, and it is a great knife
as well.
The RC-4 would be an excellent knife I'm sure, and hope to get one
when I get back to work.

Cheers

Nice choice.

I just picked one up myself last week. I have only given it a light workout so far, fuzzsticks, taking down some saplings, light batoning. It seems to be holding up rather well.

Whereabouts are you heading?

Not sure yet. I might have a mate tag along so we can have a guys weekend and do manly things. Or it might just be me on my own which is cool too. Mount Franklin near Daylesford is nice with the illusion of being away from civilization. But I might be a little more adventurous this time around.

Recommend any good spots? Keeping in mind it will be Easter I'd prefer not to have camp trailers and ankle biters running around.

Don't go to Little Desert

You could try up around puckapunyal

Grampians maybe

I would have to go with the F1. It has better edge geometry and is a bit more versatile.

G'day Ken

You can say that again

Although I will point out, that considering the use I have put some of their models through over the years, IMO each one has well & truly deserved that level of devotion :D

Kind regards
Mick

Handofcod sorry I missed this I have been really busy of late. Had I come in I would have suggested you look at the S1. I worked at a small camping shop that has since closed but I will be managing a new one ( hopefully if the real estate agent will extractosdigitus) within a fortnight or so.
I have a R3 ( Ontario) in D2 and both a F1 and S1. We had he Rowan R4 in the shop and it was OK but....
With both the S1 and F1 in stock and with the ability to put one in either hand we out sold F1 by three to one with S1's Much better ( in my opinion) I am also a big convert to Scandi grind for any kind of serious carving. But I made my own for that. Link to the Australian knife forum

My Rc3 is a cool good sized smaller knife. I do like it a lot.
But If I had to pick one of those four for the BOB it would be the S1.

Interesting point - I bought the F1 over the RC4 without having ever held either. Something I've just had to put up with because I've never seen any stores in Melbourne that stock such articles. I guess I didn't want to consider the S1 because I already have a large knife and didn't want to get into the mindset that bigger is better. I really only need the F1 to split smaller pieces of wood, fine carving, anything where a higher degree of control is required which would be difficult with the recon scout.

Fair call. Had you thought of a WM1 for a small knife?
Bloody ( Dear mods "Bloody" is not a swear word when used between two Australians) awesome knife for it's size. If you want a smaller knife for those odd jobs.
my normal load out for bush ( I'm a Army Cadet training officer) is either an AKC Golok in my pack, the " Beast" ( that link I gave you) on my webbing with a Victorinox Swiss Tool. and the WM1 in my pocket with my PSK. Camping with the family it is just in my pocket.
