F1 Survival vs. RC-4

I have an RC4. It cuts much better since I convexed the edge. And I must say it does come with a great sheath abd carry system.

I have an F1 on the way from a trade here on the forum. I had held off purchasing one due to the fact that none of the photos I had seen of the F1 showed the extended tang, nad I didn't think the thermorun handle would hold up to being pounded on. I saw in a recent review that it does have an extended tang, and then stumbled on the trade.

If I were to spend the money I too would probably go with the S1 or the A1 instead.

I like the F1, bought two F1 blades, made the handles and sheaths.

I really like that F1, TWBryan. I just can't get warmed up to the standard handles on the Fallkniven knives, even though I know they work well.

Does anyone have a good source for the F1 full tang blade blanks. I've seen some in the $100 range and wondered if anyone knows of a less-expensive source. I'm talking about the VG-10 laminated blades by the way.

I bought mine here-http://www.bladematrix.tv/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=28725

As I understand it Falkniven uses a convex grind, but they only produce sharpening stones (as opposed to strops). How does that work?

The Fallkniven DC3 and DC4 hones work fantastic with a very light touch. Then just use your belt.

that left me scratching my head too

mousepad/sandpaper and leather/compound are so easy I can't see even trying anything else

does anyone "specialize" in re-handling Fallknivens by any chance?

an F1 in orange G10 would be the cat's a$$ IMO :D

A hand held stone (ie the DC 3 & DC4) can be used to maintain a convex edge.

This is the way it has been done for a long time (way longer than mouse pads have been around :D )

Like anything, if you are not used to the technique, it will take some practice

Kind regards
Mick

I am now plus one Fallkniven F1 and minus some leg hair - this thing is SHARP right out of the box. I'm already a huge fan and I haven't even taken it out for a test run yet!

I'm in Melbourne (south coast of Australia) but generally travel inland to camp. Presuming you are comparing to North American bushland I'm not sure if that will help at all...

Well considering in North America we have everything from vast deserts, coastline, semi tropical rain forests, the Rocky Mountains, Sierras and Cascades with many peaks in excess of 14,000 Feet (you can convert to metric), I'd say we have almost everything comparable to Oz, and even more extreme.

I have both of these knives plus a couple of Bark River Bravo-1's and a few others you'd probably consider. If you're going into humid conditions, I'd go F1. If not toss a coin. They will both do the jobs very well. Ahh, I just remembered you went with the F1. No worries mate, you'll get the RC-4 at some point anyway. I did.

Now I can join the F1 club as mine just arrived. It's a full tang blade blank that differs from the standard model. When I epoxy some scales onto it the tang will show all around.

So far I'm very impressed. It's super sharp, super clean from the first pin hole to the tip of the blade and quite stout. It's of a similar size to some of my other favorite knives and even scale-less, the shape of the tang feels comfortable and should be a great platform for some nice wooden scales.

I've got three other knives with VG-10 blades and I love how they are brought to a super clean and sharp edge without too much effort. This one is bigger than the others (all three are folders) and I can't wait to get it ready for the woods.

Thanks ulgah for the link. Definitely the best price I've seen.

My F1 is definitely one of the easiest stainless knives I've ever seen to sharpen and get a screaming sharp edge on.

Just don't be an idiot and baton it into rocks like a couple bozo's on youtube and it'll easily serve you for many years.
