Got my new Endura today - made by Spyderco with the Emerson Wave.

Basic information is below. There is much good news:

- The edge is a true double (“V”) grind (unlike the single-side grind on the Emersons). Finally!!

- Same handle as a regular Endura. There is a Boye dent.

- The FRN handle is a dark blue. It is so dark that from a distance, or in subdued lighting, it looks black.

- The clip is silver with a black Spydie on it. Looks good.

- The blade profile is more of a spear point – not as pointy as the regular Endura.

- Unlike my Endura lightweight, the blade has a hollow grind. (My only dislike).

- Overall blade length is about 1/8 less than a standard Endura. The sharpened portion is the same length on both versions.

- The thumb ramp has generous grooving and feels good.

- Blade markings: “ Spyderco VG-10, Seki City–Japan, Emerson Pat.#5.878.500”.

- The blade is perfectly centered when closed. Wooo Hooo!

- There is no horizontal or vertical blade play. This is as tight as any Spyderco I have owned.

- The Spyderco box is marked "C10PGYW – Endura Wave”.

- This wave is deeper than even the second generation Emerson Waves. This thing has worked EVERY time I have pulled it out of my pocket. Quite unlike the first generation Wave on my SOCFK that only seemed to work when no one else was watching.

A Spyderco with a Wave. Who thought it would ever become a reality? I really like this knife.

I had no idea this even existed. This is definitely going on my must have list. Sal really kicks ass. I know some people think that Spydercos aren't that great, have QC problems, blah, blah, blah, but I've never seen a company that takes such an active interest in their customers (both existing and potential) wants and actually acts on them so enthusiastically. They really respect the knife lovers who express themselves on the internet (Benchmade does too but that's another story) and I'm growing to respect Spyderco more and more each day. Awesome of Emerson to let Spyderco use the wave too.

WOAH! I was just talking about Spyderco needing a new Endura. That's awesome! Like he said, hollow grind :( (though understandable for self defense, along with the spearpoint). But why didn't they wait and make it out of ZDP? Why no serrations like their last self-defense knife, the Civilian/Matriarch? Where is this thing available??????

EDIT: nvm, found it http://www.selfdefensegear.com/Merc...r&Product_Code=C10PGYW&Category_Code=Spyderco

$9.00 for regular shipping?? they're really milking the fact that this thing is an exclusive to them.

Somehow I will justify to myself that I will "need" this new Spyderco in some way .BTW is this "wave" feature actually that fast in a tactical situation?- more so than a conventional Spyderco thumbhole or thumbstuds(I don't like thumbdiscs)?

Yes. It is. The wave feature uses your pocket to open the knife, so it's basically like pulling a fixed blade knife from your pocket. You can see some demo videos on Emerson's website here. http://www.emersonknives.com/EK_Video_Vault.html

DAMN! does it really spring open like that? do you have to flick your wrist or something? or is it just the slow video that makes it look faster?

also, with a device like that... wouldn't a smaller "wave" be better for speed? I see a larger one not having the same leverage. It's hard to explain what I mean...

I would think a smaller wave would have less chance of catching and more of slipping... but that depends on the shape of course. Same leverage? I have no idea what that means.

I'm thinking in terms of physics. I'm sure a larger one would catch better, but if I'm imagining the mechanism correctly, the smaller the wave, the less of a space has to be acted upon by the edge of the pocket, therefore less drag, more immediate momentum, a more forceful pivot point, and a snappier deployment. Like I said, not finding the words to explain correctly, just have to think like me then feel it.

I just got mine today too. I spent about 1/2 hour drawing it from my pocket. Now I need to just reinforce the corners of my pants pockets...

It does snap open pretty effortlessly on the draw. Grasp, make sure your finger isn't blocking the blade's opening, draw back decently hard, and with just a tad bit more resistance than usual the blade snaps into place.

Or draw at a slightly different angle, or more gently, and open it like a traditional folder.

I haven't had the chance to apply Militec yet.

Sorry about the lack of pics. I have some but they are too large for me to post.

Jedi, this thing is fast. So fast that a bystander has no idea how it opens. It looks like it is open before it comes out of the pocket. There is no wrist flicking required. You just have to draw it out with a little rearward motion to ensure that it catches the side seam of your pocket.

The first Emerson Wave slots were small - they did not work 100% of the time. You had to do everything just so to make them work (and even then they didn't always work). The newer Emerson Waves are deeper (I have one on my CQC-10) and they are much more reliable. The Wave slot on this new Endura is even larger and works even easier. I see no discernable speed difference based on the size of the Wave - only an improvement in reliability with the deeper wave.

Looking at the picture of the knife closed, it almost appears as if the tip of the knife is exposed. I find it hard to believe that this could be the case with any Spyderco.

Can someone who owns one of these Enduras tell me if the tip is entirely in the handle when the knife is fully closed? Thanks.

Why are so few being made? This looks like a great seller. Why the "limited edition" crap?
Probably part of the licensing for the Wave feature.

Tip is entirely in the handle when closed. You are just seeing the swedge, the lighting's just a little off in that top photo.

Looking forward to this one - I just ordered mine. Glad to see that this project went through given the past drama on SDF!

Kudos to Spyderco, Emerson and the guy(s) at SDF for bringing us the first ever licensed use of the wave.

Now if only we could get a waved Axis lock...
