"G' Mawnin" as old man Charlie (Chaw-lee as he would introduce himself) who owns the hardware store down the street would say. Usually followed by indiscernable mutterings that are assumed to be about the weather, or his sciatica acting up again. Charlie is in his upper 80's now and recently he grabbed me by the arm as I walked by, "Boy(!), whatchoo dooin wit dat knive on your belt?" Nodding towards my Folts Minimalist tucked IWB on my right hip.
"Oh, this little thing?" As I place my hand over it. "My grandfather told me a long time ago that every man should have a good knife, a good pen, a good wife and a good dinner."
"Well, I guess your Grandaddy was a smart man." He replied.

Charlie let go of my arm and nodded me on my way to finish shopping, but I knew he was still keeping an eye on me. I have been going to this hardware store my whole life and always have carried a knife, I guess this is the first time he noticed. Well I needed twine to tie up some plants in the yard, so I pull out a measured length, grab my knife and in one clean effortless swipe, cut it. The scissors he had there were useless against it. Charlie saw this and commented on my back to the register, "That's a sharp knife you got."
"Yessir, that's the only requirement to be a good knife."

He smiled and suddenly I felt as if he had respect for me now. I was always nice to him, he is many years my senior, but I knew he only saw my tattoos and punk rock band t-shirts. It was a good day to show an old timer that young people still appreciate having a knife as a tool, and I hope he looks at every young guy a little dfferent now.

Do your part to be a knife ambassador, talented young knife makers with families to feed depend on us! I just hope Charlie doesn't freak out the first time I walk in there with a soon to be mine DFK rigging knife!

Awesome story! That is cool. I bet his eyes will get big when he sees the rigging knife, it isn't exactly small! :D

I am making a liner lock when I have the time, it will be cool to have a knife I made to show off.

My grandfather bought me one of my first knives, a SAK I still use today. It has a cool glass magnifying glass that you can start a fire with on a clear day.

We could carry knives when I was in Elementary school but by the time I was older they would confiscate them. I think now they press charges! I remember our Principal asking me for a knife to open a soda with. Recess was for stropping on our blue jeans if we weren't playing football, lol! No one was hurt...

Daniel, your only a handfull of years ahead of me in age and my sophomore year of high school I was expelled because a teacher saw my linerlock knife's pocket clip! He ran over, damned near tackled me and yanked it outta my pocket. I didn't even think twice about it, I just grab a knife along with my watch, wallet, keys, etc. Here I am, a good kid, spotless record being expelled because of zero tolerance for a legal tool! If I had illegal (pot was still illegal then) drugs I would of been suspended for 3 days. I was arrested and treated like I said "bomb on an airplane!"

Damned scared politicians keep taking away freedoms. What's next, no steak knives at restaurants?

Morning y'all. The wife is sick, and its my day off, so that means I have a day of being her servant, or just flat out leaving her alone. She is almost unbearable when she is sick! Oh well, til death do us part, right?! Is that a request? Maybe I'll just burrow in the shop.

Yeah Big, I know the feeling! Seeing pics of my rigging knife coming together isjust awesome! Especially with the teak wood scales, having not seen them in person they look great in the photos and I know they are going to look better in person! I already am considering having rigging knives and spikes made by other makers, I think it would be a cool segment of the market to collect. Of course this one will be a user!

Xander I hope you can enjoy your day off.If she is unbearable I would bury myself in the shop also.Good luck with it.Hope she is better soon!

Ohhh that sucks! I feel like a zombie as I can't get well myself. I slept about half the day yesterday, I still have an earache. I think it is my tooth...

Fix her some good meals and stay in the shop!

Nice!

I don't think I will be able to do a spike right now schedule wise but I really want to, I'll try to locate some round stock when I can and see if I can make a cool one. I think I will slip it in when I get a chance to order from flatground as they sell different types of rod.

I'm thinking a marlinspike should be heat treated for toughness and a spring temper but I still haven't found out what others do. I have been looking at lots of them.

That is cool you may collect rigging knives! They seem to be somewhat hard to find especially in the custom world, it's cool to have something unique and useful.

Yep! Have a good one... :D

Thanx guys! After rereading my post, it sounds really mean :foot:!! She is in bed with a sore throat and a chest cold. But you know the saying...If momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy! I took her car and did a full wash and detail inside and out and topped off the tank for her today, since she drives her car between campuses for work everyday she doesn't get much time to keep it clean.

Feel better Daniel- also drill rod is usually O1 and can be easy to find. I agree about the heat treat, and spring temper sounds about right. If using O1 I would temper twice at 575* to start. The classic Drew spikes were heat treated and still able to dress the point down with a file if needed, but it wasn't easy. If you do want to make a spike keep me in mind when you get around to it, we'll work something out.

I think it would be fun to collect riggers, they are great working knives and unusual to boot. Matching spikes of course make the set complete.

Lol I understand!

I can get O1 drill rod as well as M2, S7, W1, A2 and maybe more, www.flatground.com has it in case you ever need anything you can't find locally.

That sounds like what I would do on the temper as well for O1, I bet 575 F would do the trick. O1 gets hard!

I'll keep you updated on the spike for sure! I have wanted to do some for a while now. Right now I have a plan to knock out my orders as soon as possible so I can get to more stuff like that.

Evening gentlemen. The wife is still sick in bed, trying to sleep it off. She is getting vegetable soup while the rest of us are having jerk style dry rub pork chops on the grill, tater tots, and steamed veggies. The wife is all bummed out because her throat is too sore for anything other than soup or icecream.

Beautiful evening here, 10 knot breeze, 64*, full glass of Sailor Jerry and Coke, and managed to get 1.5 hours in the shop today as well! Lots of other chores were done too, so no great progress in the shop.

Cheers!

Man, it sounds like you guys are living the dream!

We are all living the dream over here, but we only say that at the worst of times...

I wrote my International Relations exam today... 3 hours of nonstop writing, most definitely not my favorite way to spend a few hours. I much preferred my abnormal psych class, an hour of multiple choice, an hour of fill-in-the-blank and an hour of short essay. Besides it was a wicked awesome class.

That's cool you got some time in the shop! I had a great day as well and just got in. Cheers!

Xander sounds like you had a very busy day. Now the bar-b-q sounds great!!!

Yeah it does! Good evening BigCountry.

Morning men.Daniel I hope you are feeling better same for Xander's wife.Being sick just sucks all the way around. Xander you are correct if momma aint happy no one is happy! You guy's have a great productive Tuesday!

Morning guys. The wife is staying home again today. She has got it pretty bad! I just hope she can manage being home by herself!

Yesterday I sarted working on some osage orange wood and let me tell you, this is some tough stuff! I have never worked with it before. I tried sanding a rough block to shape and it just laughed at me, didn't even heat up and burn all that quick. Working on a set of scales or a DIY knife blank from Mark Wohlwend. Daniel, you ever thought of offering DIY knife blanks? Several makers on here do and they are lots of fun! Think about how nice it would be to just grind, ht, and sell! If you do some, let me know, I might pick one up.
