For one of my workbenches I got a 2" thick solid door with formica laminated on it. It has steel legs so I mounted my vise right over one of the legs for when I use it as an anvil for my minis it is as solid as can be! I have a third workbench that need a new top so I may go for the double thick plywood.

That sounds nice! I have been looking around here for stuff like that, I am hoping to find something like that for another bench. I want formica or corian for my finishing bench. If I find some I might use it everywhere, I have metal chunks embedded in everything in my current shop, something I will try to avoid in the future. It is odd here, I scoured all the places that sell used building supplies and home depot is actually cheaper!

I hope the forging is going well!

I like 'em both, mykel m! Very nice.

The big butt on that knife ( like a couple knives I got from KFU ) means less hand fatigue on longer jobs....at least to me.

Knives are the only time I'm a fan of big butts, however.....

It's really nice isn't it!

Sorry but I had to do it! :p

Hey guys how you doing? Thanks for posting that picture here. I do like big butts on knives and my woman (in case she reads this). As Mykel said it wasn't perfect but it does feel good that it went to him. He let me know the problems and I have been addressing them on my new work. Now sense I am on someone else's sub-forum I won't talk myself up. But thank you again.

Daniel, you will love having 100 amps out there. As for wall covering, I suggest OSB. Its cheap (at least around here), sturdy, and you can easily attach stuff to it. And maybe I am weird but I think it looks good too. My work tops are 2x12 pine. I picked them up at job sites for home construction, just walk up and asked for the cut-offs and scrap and had way more than I needed. I glued between the joints and covered it in floor sealer used on hard wood floors. Easy to clean and you can polish it and it gets shiny. I am really happy for you.

By the way I will be getting in touch with you about what we emailed before. I am holding off for just a bit, I have found an extremely large heat treat kiln out of an industrial metal plant, and I am trying to get it. It is fully functional and the guy that has it got it for free (unbelievable). We will see how that turns out quickly enough.

Take care guys, talk soon. But for now My alma matter is playing right now in the championship football game (division 1-AA). I have to go watch.

Afternoon men. Too many dam snow mobiles running past my house today. Last night a group of 3 got off their sleds next to my garage.I grabbed my Glock and went out to see what they were doing. They left rather quick. Lots of them look for unlocked garages to steal stuff from.I keep mine deadbolted at all times. It is a shame to live out in a small town and have to worry about thieves. I hate a thief!

Great stuff DanCo! I built most of my old shop with scrap I collected, my big bench is double 2x6 constriction with bolts... all from a broken redwood deck the previous homeowner scrapped and plywood I got from a job site for free. It is tough to find scrap right now in the winter but luckily wood is cheap, that 3/4" plywood was only $20! It was up to $30 this summer.

I should get a big saw mill, my neighbor has one they used in my valley in the 30's. I doubt I'd run out of trees!

I hate stuff like that, sucks you have to deal with it.

You can't really see my house so I don't have too many people come by unannounced... last year I was working in the back and had some Jehovias Witnesses scare the crap out of me! I have to watch for hunters but luckily no one has dropped by yet.

I'm off to work on the shop!

If you go with wood---plywood or 2-by's, email me tonight. At work now + cannot recall the name of this stuff....

I needed a durable coating for the big bench in the Handloading Emporium.....mentioned it to some young pup @ the local Lowe's....he sold me a $28 gallon of some kinda Concrete Sealer....it only works over a painted / sealed surface, he said....thinner'n water & looks like milk....it dries almost too daym fast, and not affected by solvents! and slicker'n owl snot....2 coats & it shines like a lacquer paint job.

Glad I didn't put any on the floor.

If you wanna metal top on your bench: Call the (nearest) local recyclers. Tell 'em what you're looking for....and that you make primo knives for a living....and that your Lady does exceptional leather work & paracord stuff....and that you brew yer own beer.......

Barter like a fiend!

Betcha they find something you can use! Mebbe even stainless.

JMO!

Hey Thanks Gnarly! I'll have to contact you about that sealer, sounds good.

Great idea about the scrap yard, I have been there before looking for brass and used to scrap tons of metal there. Next time I am close I'll have to look, they have acres of stuff and are helpful folks.

I used to work for this crazy metal recycler guy who used to smelt his own metals, everything from Aluminum to Platimun... he also owns a gold mine. It was a lot of fun, we used to go everywhere scrapping stuff. One time he was unloading some scrap and asked the electromagnet crane operator to pull the load out of the truck for him, long story short he only has half a truck bed left!

Morning men. Got a long day today, 10+ hour shift. Not really looking forward to it, but you gotta do whatcha gotta do. Funny thing is when working construction I could do 12+ hour days no problem. Maybe its just being trapped in a store that makes it tough, or the idiot public I get to deal with. Probably both. Wish I ould get in the shop today, but not gonna happen!

Morning all, took the wife to see Elvis last night. Well....Elvis tribute artist Matt Cordell.

It's the public, lol!

I have had a lot of different jobs and owned several businesses, I think knife people are the best! Making knives is fun but the people I interact with are what really makes it a pleasure to be a knifemaker.

Cool! Time for a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich!

Morning Bigcountry! How's the weather up there this winter? Cold but not much snow here, I am glad!

It has been a weird winter.Got a foot of snow last Sunday/Monday then on Friday it was 48 degrees. Now it is back to freezing temps but not much snow.I am hoping for a mild winter for the deer population up here.

Sounds like here, nothing is melting at my place but across the valley the snow is nearly melted. I was in town yesterday evening and that is where all the deer went apparently, I saw at least 30 of them.

Great tips! I am more than happy to help if you need it and I also hope that kiln rocks! I heard the big industrial ones are great, they are known to heat up quickly, mine takes almost an hour to ramp to 1800 or so.

Football... oh I miss it. We need TV here! Netflix is fine for almost everything but I want to see the Cowboys! :D I hope your school did well.

More news at 10...

So when I get to the store this morning I find a small pet carrier at the front door...I look inside and a small lion head mix rabbit looks back at me. Its a little grubby, unbrushed hair, but friendly and healthy. Our store can't just take animals and sell them, also I can't just take a strange animal and put it in with the other rabbits. So I leave it in the carrier, give it clean water and fresh food. He's pretty calm and hand tame when I pick him up, so now he is happy and loving his new home with our other rabbit Chloe. Seperate cages for now, he's not fixed yet, don't want bunnies yet.

Meet Hobo...

That's the good part of today, I had to deal with a lazy new employee and another one who didn't do any cloing procedures the night before, I think I got caught up with about an hour left to start my closing for tonight. Damn slackers.

For those of you wondering why I put up with crap at work, here is a bit of enlightenment...

from 24/7 Wall St.full article the worst run cities in America, my hometown and current personal hell at times...

6. Stockton, Calif.
> Violent crime per 1,000 people: 13.81 (6th highest)
> Poverty rate: 23.0% (27th highest)
> Adult population graduated from high school: 75% (12th lowest)
> Credit rating: Baa1 (negative outlook)
> Population: 292,747

Stockton is part of the inland area that also contains Fresno. Stockton was one of the hardest-hit by the burst housing bubble. In 2007, median home value in the city was $364,700. By 2010, that number declined more than 50% to $171,500. This massive drop — the second-largest decline among all major cities — has led to large-scale foreclosures and an increasingly dire economic situation. Stockton has the sixth-highest violent crime rate in the country among major U.S. cities, as well as the second-highest average unemployment rate, at more than 20%. The city currently has a large debt and a weak economy.

Now you know why I try to get on the water as much as possible, the city management can't screw that up, yet...

Morning men. Well today is my wife's birthday. I bought her a blue Pomeranian for Christmas/birthday. They are extremely rare color. She puts up with my weapon fetish so I feed her pet fetish. That is what marriage is all about give and take equally.
