Fallkniven F1, ESEE RC-3, ESEE Izula, Griptilian

out of your list, Fallkniven F1 for sure. different class of knife from the izula and griptilian, that's for sure. At least the RC-3 and RC-4 are comparable in intended usage.

But seriously, why not a bark river? Or a smaller strider fixed blade. IMO buy the best you can afford to replace and only buy 2 of them (not necessarily the same knife but close enough).

btw to me best is what I like best. oh and in an emergency situation I would baton with my SnG for sure. same with a griptilian, as long as we're talking soft natural wood and we're doing a small amount, disengage the lock and have at it.

Go with the F1...Combined with the Zytel sheath its a very slim package. I dont know why youd call it large and bulky. Other forumites have stated the things that make the F1 so good, so im not going to repeat them.

The Izula is nice too, and comes with an excellent sheath, but for my needs/hands the Izula is too small. If its to be thrown in a backpack id go with a much bigger knife, as you have the room for it.

Dont carry the Griptilian as an emergency knife for hiking. Its a folder, so it wont stand up to any serious batoning. Any fixed blade will outperform it any day of the week.

Im not hell bent. Why couldn't I do that with a griptilian exactly?

Gosh freq18hz, maybe you could go through a piece of pressure treated lumber of that size in 5 minutes with your Griptilian?

It would make one hell of a video. I have 1 crisp $C-Note, that says you can't do it.

Upload the video and it's yours, promise! :)

The short answer is yes, the Griptillian will most likely do the job for you. It seems to be your preference, so roll with it.

You have said you want this knife to carry with you hiking, so I'm assuming that if something goes wrong (lost, bad weather, sprained ankle, etc.) that prevents you from returning at days end you are looking at one, maybe two overnights until you can walk out or S&R finds you.

I carry a Fallkniven PXL for EDC. This is a solid well built folder and I would stake my life on it in a short term survival situation. I wouldn't be afraid to do some light batoning with it, and it would cut/chop well enough to notch branches or whatever to fashion a shelter and get a fire going.

It may even be very suitable for longer term survival situations, however, I would much prefer a fixed blade if faced with an undetermined length of time in a survival situation. A solid built folder will take a certain amount of abuse, but over time that will take it's toll on the pivot.

The bottom line is: a solid piece of steel is stronger than a pivot. Think of it this way; which do replace more often on your car, the tie rod ends, or the frame?

A good folder isn't inherently weak, but over the long haul a fixed blade will prove the stronger of the two.

You need to decide for yourself, but if my guess is close to correct on what your potential need may be, a good solid folder should work for you. Personally, given the option, I would opt for having a fixed blade.

That falls a lot into personal skill, not the knife.

Would you extend the offer to anyone who could do it in 5 minutes 11 seconds with a Griptillian?

I'd much prefer a fixed blade too. Not picking on you Dag-nabit or your beautiful Fallkniven PXL - they are very nice, but which would you rather stake your backside on? This is pretty much the same for all folders not just the PXL.

Fallkniven PXL folder

Blade length: 3.46"

Price: $249.95

Warranty:

We offer a two-year warranty covering defects in materials and in manufacture, i.e. faults that occur during manufacture but which are not noticed until the knife is used. We repair or replace the knife. The warranty is void if the knife is used incorrectly – the knife is intended for cutting with and is not for twisting, bending, chopping or hitting.

Rat Cutlery RC-3 w/sheath and boot/pocket clip

Blade length: 3 3/8 in

Price: $81.95

Warranty:

If you screw it up, break it, or cut it in two with a cutting torch, send it back and we'll replace it. Warranty is transferable. In other words, we warranty the knife no matter how many times it's been traded, sold or given away. We don't ask for a sales receipt, date of purchase or where you bought the knife - No fine print and no hassles. If you have a problem, contact us.

In 5 minutes with your Griptilian, bring it!! :D

And shave your arm too!

No insult taken. :D

Just to clarify, I wasn't extolling the virtues of the PXL, simply stating that it is a solid well built folder, and, should I ever find myself between a rock and a hard spot, I'm confident it would see me through. Since it is my EDC it is most likely the knife I would have on hand in the event of an unforeseen circumstance.

Given a choice I would much prefer a fixed blade, and in a planned event, i.e. heading into the wilderness, I personally would carry a fixed blade.

Of all the knives I own the my RAT RC4 is my least favorite, but only for reasons of comfort, not capability, and in a survival situation I would be very thankful to have it along if it happened to be the knife available at the time.

After all, in a survival situation "any knife is better than no knife" or "the best knife is the one you have with you", etc. etc. etc.

But this isn't really about personal favorites, it's about what is needed to survive a few days in the wilderness in the event of an unfortunate circumstance. Any good quality knife, some means to start a fire, your wits, and some basic outdoor experience will greatly enhance your chances of success in a short term survival situation.

It'll show better if I use my leg to shave, I don't have very hairy arms.

5 minutes 11 seconds, just like the video?

Care to offer that c-note to me and my SAK??

I'll bet my backside on any knife. Even a knapped piece of obsidian. What is between your ears will keep you alive , not the brand of your knife.

Wow well thanks again for all the info! It wasn't my intention for the tone of this thread to go hostile. Although I am excited to see someone shave a log and a leg, even if it isn't for money! But who doesn't love a good bet?

Really though, my entire motivation for asking the original question was because I find myself wanting to buy MANY knives. But I already own more than I need, and really when I think about it: As long as everything goes according to plan, I should never need to use my emergency/survival knife. So while Im dying to buy an Izula, RC-3, and a Fallkniven, I'm trying to figure out if I really even need any of them since I already have 2 mini griptilians (one is D2), a full size combo grip with BK coating, a spyderco delica, and a CRKT m16-10kz, 3 multi tools to choose from. And I also have a ritter RSK-MK5 in my pocket survival kit.

I just want to make the right choice, because its not a preperation/choice you can take back in a real survival situation (not a campfire bushwacking playdate). This knife, whichever it turns out to be, will never be touched except if that circumstance ever arises.

I love the collection aspect of this site, but really its kind of a disease. =) This is my feeble attempt to stop while I am ahead, and just pack the right tool, all the time.

freq18hz, I hate to break this to you but I thik you may be becoming a knife addict like most of us here. You sounded like you didn't own hardly anything but low and behold, you've already got some good knives and a craving for more.

Two choices: unsubscribe from all threads and delete any bookmarks that lead here and other knife forums, or feed the need and start buying. We've had threads on this and no knife can do it all - you must have more knives and then more and more and..........:D

Waiting on those videos and my money you guys....I'll send you my PP info :D

addictions aren't a good way to stay happy =)

When I'm rich and famous, I'll have a knife collection perhaps. Until then, I just need an emergency survival knife, and an EDC blade for backup.

Wait Skimo, we've got a better offer standing. Do you have a pic of your SAK?

Yep..hows that saw look? Still think an Izula can go through wood better?

And while we are waiting why don't you post some stuff you have done with your knives. I have already posted a link in this thread what my measley SAK can do. A simple search of my posts will show what my Mora, hatchet, and a couple of my JK's can do.

A search of threads started by you shows no knife usage at all, none, zip, nada.

Start your own thread,or post them here.
