Favorite aspect of Strider knives

I went through a major Strider phase several years ago. I just thought they looked really cool and tough in a post apocalyptic kind of way. I owned several different versions of the SnG, SMF, AR and GB. I enjoyed playing with them, but in actual cutting I didn't find any of them very useful. The handles are not that comfortable, the blades are thick with obtuse edges, and the locks were all over the place. I had to send in 2 brand new knives to have the locks adjusted. I have heard that their recent designs have much better lockup though.

I agree, who gives a damn what he did. I'm sure if you dig deep enough all knife makers have a few skeletons in their closet.

I am an actual infantry veteran. I have a virtual crypt in my closet. I choose not to try to hide them. My "convictions" are for public display. Brutal honesty.

As with any "extreme" design there will be those who like 'em and those who hate 'em. QA problems are only meaningful as a percentage of the total production and we don't have that information. The history of the company owner, on the other hand, is well known and many of us, especially we veterans, cannot in good conscience put a penny in that company's coffers.

And the OP has yet to re-surface. Hmmmm.

Jesus Christ,

I can't reply on JC's behalf (I'm actually more like a Buddha physically :)) but as long as there are threads about Strider knives there will be those of us who make sure the uneducated are shown the truth behind the legend. Deal with it.

At least some of us who care have a military background. It might not mean a big deal to you, but it matters to some with a military background. Though you of course dont need a military background to have an opinion or be pro or con - goes without saying.
I realize, that concepts like honor, integrety and honesty might not count for much and may seem like outdated and alien concepts to some in this day and age.

I'm sure if you dig deep enough all knife makers have a few skeletons in their closet.
Im sure not all are saints, but I dont have any info about whether or not 'all knifemakers' have skeletons in their closet.
How ever, with a very high degree of certainty I can state, that I dont believe the majority of knifemakers are ex-cons who lied about about their military background and sold knives on the accomplishments of real heroes who lived and died for their country (see above re honor, integrety and honesty).

The only honour, integrity and honesty I count on is my own.

As for the knives, I've had to reprofile the edges very heavily. With that done, I've carved spoons with the SmF and made a walking stick with it, and multiple spears and sausage skewers for woods use with the SnG.

You made a walking stick out of spoon!? You know, I can actually envision that - you might be on to a new backpacking combination tool (the Sporking Stick!!??).

Im of course just kidding:D:thumbup:

As for the knifemaker: Since you are in your own words 'a wrecking ball aimed at the dark heart of criminal scum across the land' and since 'rehabilitation is not a word in your vocabulary,'you seem remarkably lenient towards an x-con.

(Still just kidding;))

Shhh... I'm just making sure he doesn't see me coming. ;)

Jesus Christ, god forbid we answer the guy's question and have a productive thread for once. Sound the alarms everyone, somebody said Strider! If you like the knives, great. If you don't, great. If you have a problem with the people behind them, then take it up with them. They have phone numbers and they go to the knife shows.

To some people, honor and integrity are virtues to live by.

There are those of us with family and friends who were killed in the line of duty, or just served with honor.
Mick (Burger) Strider is a liar and a thief because he didn't earn or deserve the honor he claims, and people should be able to make informed decisions about a company they are preparing to give $500 to.

If that is fine with you, then so be it, at least you didn't make your decision out of ignorance.

Op, since you are asking, there is nothing special about a Strider knife that makes it worth any amount of money.

I like the way they look and that's about where it stops for me. The "hard use" folder to me is just stupid, I don't think folders are suppose to be used hard they are suppose to cut if you need a hard use knife get a fixed blade.

While they do have a very good warranty which is nice imo they should seeing as they sell knives for 400 bucks that more than likely cost around 100 to make. So for every one they sell they can afford to replace 3 without any profit lost.

Business owners values mean a lot to me. I wont support a business who has a owner that is dishonorable. I can not bring myself to buy a product and put money into someones pocket that I disagree with what they have done to advance there business.

+1 to all of this.

As the guy who dragged out the usual can o' worms again in the first place in this thread, this is exactly why I mentioned it.

To some people, myself included, this matters. I have in fact made buying decisions based on this, and others who feel the same way might want to do the same if they knew. Mentioning this again isn't some silly vendetta, it's about sharing information about knife makers on a forum about all things knife-related.

I was going to buy a Strider--hey, I know they're a mall ninja's wet dream, but the styling clicks with the old lizard brain, what can I say?--but when I discovered the truth about Mick I decided not to. I discovered this information on bladeforums when someone mentioned it and I found it very useful. By doing this again myself I'm just trying to pay it forward so that someone else who wouldn't want to do business with someone as fraudulent as Mick won't make that mistake.

I don't think it makes my opinion any more or less valid, but I jumped out of perfectly good airplanes with a rifle and a ruck myself, and my DD-214 says I was honorably discharged.

Putting the info out there is fine. It's good for people to have the facts about what they buy.
For me, I just care more about the facts of the product than the producer.

In that vein, I consider the folders to be about $150 overpriced. I like them, but I'd like them more for $150 less.
The fixed blades just do nothing for me, other than one of the karambits...which also looks to be about $150 overpriced (consistency at least :)).

ZT offers beefy, "hard use" folders, made in USA with a lifetime warranty for around half what a strider costs. I just don't see the appeal of a strider. They look awkward to my eye.

 What is going on here?

Mick Burger (Strider) embellished his military record to sell more knives.
He claimed special ops status while really in prison for carjacking.
This pisses a bunch of people off, who in turn don't want to buy the knives...which is fine.

Some of them then go on to judge every person who doesn't share their annoyance...which is less fine.

That is what's going on.

That sums it up pretty well.

Thank you for serving and your honesty. In that post I was making reference to the car jacking, not his military record.

Oh, wow.

Looks like we've already started insulting each other's 'honour, integrity, and honesty'. Sweet.

I wonder which topic causes more overall butthurt: China-made knockoffs, or Genuine USA-made Striders.

On that note, I wonder how many people who buy Striders in spite of Mick Strider's lying about being a tactical spec-ops-operational-operator, then refuse to buy knockoff knives because that's dishonest... ;)

Haha, so much passion for knives in this thread isn't a bad thing I suppose. Personally I have Chinese knock offs, in fact I often use a knife that looks alot like a Spyderco Military. It's a decently made knife for the price and I don't mind getting it dirty. After all it's just a hunk of steel that sits on your pocket and cuts stuff. I'm not selling my soul to the Chinese or Strider by appreciating their knives.
