I find myself becoming a fan of CRKT's current line of tactical folders. I have a Small CKFF that I love, it fits my hand perfectly and is real smooth. I also love the Companion fixed blade, and think it might have the best knife-to-money ratio of anything on the market. What do you think?

Even though I don't have one, I really like the medium Crawford Point Guard. My Mirage is pretty cool, too.

I have the small Point Guard, M16-02Z, stiff KISS, Kasper Fighting Folder Small and Large and the Companion. Their knives are very good, especially for that price.
One thing about the Companion they should fix is the crappy sheath, otherwise I'm very satisfied with them.

Currently my favourite CRKT knives are Crawford/ Kasper (large, plain), Polkowski/Kasper Companion (plain) and the M16-03Z, but I guess that it will be the Crawford/ Kasper Professional model in future.

the CRKT professional is the KFF w/aluminum handles w/holes drilled in them, like the crawford custom Ti kasper (i have one<the custom crawford> and LOVE it) and i plan on getting one when avalable too - also have a STIFF KISS, med and large kaspers, pointgurd, M16-00(a handy utility knife) and my favorite CRKT, a polkawski/kasper companion, w/a custom sheath from on/scene tactical - knife+custom shaeth= a winner imho - i much prefer ot to my MOD razorback (cost $120 by the way) and plan on extensive carry this fall - check out the pics of al's cutom companions at www.arizonacustomknives.com, they look DARNED close in profile, blade width, etc - of course the steel isnt as good, etc but they only run $28 + $28 for the sheath, the polkawski run about $300, and i want 1, perhaps a longer bladed version - but i think the companion is a helluva lot of knife for the $$ imho- and my wife likes the med kasper so much she took mine from me and carrys it daily - fits her hand great, she's little 5'3 115 - but i think CRKT makes some winners, and good customer servbice too........

I've accumulated quite a few CRKT knives over the last year or two. I've become a big fan of the M16 and Crawford/Kasper folders. I'm also one of the few human beings on Earth who hasn't had any problems with the sheaths that come with the Polkowski/Kasper companion.

hi guys,
not been posting for a while, just lurking and watching with interest the waxing and waning of razoredj's and brian edgington's relationship. lol! you chaps crack me up, but you are polite to each other even when you are ripping each other to pieces, so fair enough!

anyway, back to the topic - CRKT kaspers. i have a large plain edge, and i love it, it is big, and yet clips to my waistband under a tshirt and isnt too obvious, good news in the U.K, where it is a hanging offence to have sharp fingernails. i am an engineer, and a scoutleader, so have my "good reason" sorted for carrying a folder larger than the magic 3 inches, but on the train, sheeple would be a little freaked by it i think, so it is good it conceals well.

what i wanted to ask was, does anyone else dislike the AUS6 used for the blade. i know AUS6 is the work of the devil, and everyone hates it, but i have a part serrated spydercard that is AUS6 and it is the sharpest thing i own, tho edge holding is not great, but you can put an evily sharp edge on it with anything. i assume the spydercard's cutting ability with AUS6 is down to edge geometry? the kasper is a work knife, and i don't wanna lose it's thickness, but it just isn't as sharp as i would like, even after working it with stones, diamonds, steels, and strops. do i need to make it thinner to get the performance i want, and if i do, will it seriously compromise the blade strength?

maybe this is a dumb question, but i have a history of dumb questions on here, so no-one will be too surprised! what do you guys think? the kasper has been out for a while, has anyone reprofiled theirs and found a demon cutter has resulted, or am i using the wrong tool for the job?

also, the professional, will it have better steel?

any answers greatly appreciated.

Wrong forum. You're thinking of KnifeForums.com.

Unless you use a knife all day every day, I don't think the steel it's made out of is that big a deel. Most stainless alloys will be just fine (though of course everyone hates 420J2, and would beat it up every day if it were hanging around the playground after school).

i assume the spydercard's cutting ability with AUS6 is down to edge geometry?

It's a thin blade; that's an advantage right off the bat.

the kasper is a work knife, and i don't wanna lose it's thickness, but it just isn't as sharp as i would like, even after working it with stones, diamonds, steels, and strops.

I've never considered the Kasper as intended as a work knife, though that's how I use it; I think it's intended as a self-defense implement.

do i need to make it thinner to get the performance i want, and if i do, will it seriously compromise the blade strength?

The edge geometry will need to be reprofiled to a different angle, if you're not happy with it, but there isn't much you can do about the thickness of the stock from which the blade itself is ground or cast.

cheers razor, i figured you would be around mate, thanks for your prompt reply.

i know the kasper was intended as a selfdefence knife, but as i am in the uk, and don't want to be a guest of Her Majesty, i have to stick to blunt instruments for defence, such as, erm, myself! i have 20 yrs of learning the bare-knuckle stuff, and feel more competant with fists, feet, forehead, knees, and that famous spanish archer, "EL BOW", than i do with a knife. and since guns are not quite as prevelant over here (yeah, only the fcuking criminals have them! grrr!), i think fisticuffs will do.

i use the kasper as a work knife because my old bucklite is showing it's age and has a lot of blade play, and i can't afford a 710 yet, they are £145 at heinnies (great service and nice blokes tho!), and i like the LAWKS.
i have a stiff kiss, but don't like the chisel grind, and it is a fixed blade which looks a bit tactical, so police might look askance at it, whereas the kasper has a bigger blade, but with plenty of belly (like it's owner!), so looks a lot more utility-oriented.

anyway, i tried to change the angle, grinding a shallower edge bevel, but still it doesn't come up to scratch, the stiff kiss will shave free standing hair, as will the spydercard, both are AUS6 same as the kasper. Do CRKT plan a kasper with better steel, as i would love a custom, but Mr Crawford makes real quality, and charges accordingly.

on another note, where is the best place to get a reasonably priced 710 if i am in the U.K, as after all the press that knife is given on gthe forums, and given that this is the most knowledgable group of knifeknuts i know of, i definately want a BM710.
general was saying something about getting a U.S shipper to put "tool, under $20" on the box, but that was hypothetical, as neither he or i would defraud HM customs like that. any ideas?

I like CRKT for their quality & pricing. I rotate between the M16-12M, large KFF, Ryan seven (removed the useless thumbstud). I also have the Companion with the crappy sheath.

Leon,

My point was only that because of the Kasper's intended use, its design might make it harder for you to get the utility edge you want. A knife with a thinner blade will take a sharp edge more quickly, since you can only go so far before the edge grinds meet each other. (For instance, those inexpensive stiletto-style lockbacks can be placed nearly flat on a stone, rubbing off or scratching up a lot of the blade finish, but producing a wickedly sharp edge relatively quickly because the blade itself is so thin.)

I had the KFF and sold it to Glockman long ago. Too slippery for me. I have a lage Point Guard and I like it at the price point. I leave it in the car to cut up boxes and such. I find the milled-out grooves in the zytel make a world of difference.

Razoredj, where in NY are you? I miss NYC's 4" blade limit.

I live in Central New York, "upstate" and far, far away from the urine smell that characterizes New York City.

Razoredj:
Where in CNY? I'm a junior at SU, myself, in the Glens falls area for the summer.

I'll never tell. Otherwise, the aliens'll find me and assimilate me.

Undoubtedly, the Crawford/Kasper, followed by the Ryan #7. I really can't understand why the Ryan hasn't been met with more excitement. It is a compact with the potential for some very serious social work, and built like a truck, not to mention the LAWKS. Mine was very sharp from the box, and after a few minutes work is now even better.

I really dig the Ryan model 7. Folks like to bash on AUS-6, but I think it's a servicable steel, easy to sharpen and keeps the knife's price affordable. It's better than the 420J2 junk out there.

I would have to say my favorite CRKT is the Carbon Fiber M16-01(Spear Point). It is just an awesome Blade!
