Favorite CRKT tactical knife

You can't go wrong with a full size M-16. That knife is really cool.
It's also the only one of the big CRKT line that I haven't heard of any spine whack failures, unlike the Crawford Kasper.

I have both the large Crawford/Kasper Folder with the smooth cutting edge and the Carson M16-14M with the AUS8 blade. I like both and and they have given good service in general purpose use. Of the two I have to say that I prefer the Carson M16-14M. It is just one great knife, especially for the price!.

Speaking of the CRKT Crawford/Kasper, has anyone checked out the new "professional" model?

knifecenter.com has the small versions in stock.

7012LE cute little knife. I don't think it's made any more and I have only seen one of them.

Thanks for the information and the pic.
I am in wonder that I found no information about the “professional” model on the Internet page of CRKT.

I own a number of CRK&T blades and have only a couple of problems with them. 1st is the use of poor steels like 6m and then glass beading them so they rust like crazy...thats crazy!.
Second is the overpriced new models and a drop in QC on these new lines, I have always been impressed with the QC of CRK&T but when I pay more than £110 for the WASP? Knife with Micarta scales then its too much IMHO. Thats into Benchmade and Spyderco G10 model cash.

The small KFF has to be my fave tactical CRKT design. However, my faves overall from these guys have to be the PECK and it's bigger brothers.

. .got my large KFF in my pocket as I sit in a motel room half a continent from home. Big ol' hunk of blade gives a guy real peace of mind.

I own a number of CRKTs. At one point in time, I fancied myself as sort of a collector of them. I frankly liked every one of their knives I put my hands on. (Never bought any of the Commander series.)

My first "good" knife was the M16-14. This was my primary carry for 18 months or so, with a couple months out for the large KFF. When I finally lubed the M16 enuff, it became so easy to open with the flipper that I knew I could get it into action quite a bit quicker than I could the KFF. The KFF, however, fits my hand so well, I've always been convinced that they snuck in one nite and used my hand for the model in designing the handle. Mine came very sharp from the factory.

Like one other poster -- sorry, forgot name -- and in response to extremfishin's question, my favorite tactical CRKT is the large Apache. The long handle feels great in my hand, and when closed, there is enuff at both ends to use as impact weapon should that prove appropriate. The blade is thin. IMO it was designed primarily for combat. It has a little belly to the blade, but the distal taper, and slim profile of the blade scream "STAB, STAB!" to me. This knife came extremely sharp, and has ATS34 steel.

Am not sure whether to rate it #2, 3, or 4, but I also really love the large LUS I have. I think for it's regular price, it is one of the outstanding bargains available, even amongst CRKT knives. It is extremely versatile -- tho not ambidextrous -- and would certainly serve well as a self defense weapon should that prove necessary. I also love the fact that it is gray, not black.

IME, the AUS6 is very corrosion resistant. Much more so than the AUS8 on the M16. Still, wish they'd gone to a better steel for the new aluminum KFF. Someone asked if that has the LAWKS. Yes, it does.

I carry the Apache some, rotating it with the Spyderco Wegner. The Wegner rides about 4-5 days to one for the Apache. That isn't to denigrate the Apache. It is just that I truly love my Wegner.

By the bye, SMKW still has a couple Apaches available at closeout prices. Tho I don't normally care much for combo blades, the Apache 3 is an incredibly cute little knife. For $15, even with the combo blade, you simply can't go wrong. It should make a fine little gent's knife.

I now have 5 CRKTs....

Polkowski/Kasper Companion (plain)
Crawford/Kasper Fighting Folder (plain)
M16-04Z
Urban Shark (combo)
Stiff Kiss (plain)

CRKT reminds me of the early days of Spyderco, when they were brand new and everyone was "discovering" them and the prices were really good.

Best value-for-money CRKTs in my neck of the woods are the Companions, M16 zytel models and the Stiff Kiss models. Most knife for your currency today.

I've been gravitating towards smaller knives, but I just got a fully serrated large Apache and I really like this knife! Got it cheap, but it's BM/Spyderco quality.

Although the most "tactical" needs I have for a knife usually involve weeds or straps, I really admire the M-16, and bought one for my nephew not long after they were out. I have just agreed to a deal which will gain me a small Crawford KFF that I am eager to see and use. I'm betting it's gonna be a heckuva knife.

You just can't beat 'em for the price!!!

I have to agree with the M16-14 being my favorite. I have it in three different versions.

I like the Ryan a lot. I've had the custom Mod. 7 for a couple years and had to try the production piece. Pretty impressive for the price.

To respond to an earlier question, the thumbstud unscrews. I've heard that some come off with finger pressure while others are destroyed during removal. I guess it depends upon how tightly your individual knife was assembled.

Meant to ask a question in my earlier post, but had already written too much, as usual.

Re the Ryan #7, I recall reading that the thumbstuds come apart easily. Even read a wondering/opinion that this could be intentional since Ryan uses the hole. But, have read several posts that speak of how really difficult it is to remove the Ryan from a pocket. That the cutouts all grab the edge of the pocket, tear up trousers pretty quickly. Frankly, I hated the size of the stud, but think I would love the Spydie hole.

Has anyone done anything in the way of replacing the scales with materials that might emerge more easily? Are the scales just screwed/torxed/Allened (is that a word?) on, or is removal more difficult? If it is easy to remove them, I might get one and make my first effort at putting my own scales on a knife.

I would have to say my favorite CRKT is the Carbon Fiber M16-01(Spear Point). It is just an awesome Blade!

I have both plain&serr. models.
Find them difficult to open. Thumb-studs a trifle small.
Quality pieces, though, and will keep practicing.
