Favorite Junk Knife

I guess the only junkish knife I still have is a very used and abused Gerber Ridge ( CRKT KISS look-a-like) with it's wierd reverse tanto. At the time I bought it I was hard on my luck and cash , I remember it costing a lot more than I thought it was worth but I needed a small knife for work so ... the rest is history. I have treated this thing like hell and it still lives around the shop as a box opener, etc .. I'm not driving to work to take a pic so you'll have to use your imagination on this one. :)

I'd say my cold steel triple action

I use it as a garden hose cutter and a toy. Its a POS. I got it brand new and the grain was chipped all around. favorite junk knife. Its built like junk and materials are as such but its fun to mess with

I got the request fine. I guess my buying mentality is in the minority. I rather save my money even if it takes a long time and then buy one of something that I really want here and there. I guess that's part of growing up in an Asian house hold where we hardly ever threw anything away. Let's just say I don't need any more clutter than I already have. I think that part has fused into adult hood so I tend to be very selective when I want to purchase something. If it's something I know I will replace, I rather skip that thing and get the one I know will not get replaced or won't be replaced for a long time. Granted, certain things are needs and not subject to this sort of thing. Other stuff such as knives, I can feel free to be picky about. The thing with knives particularly is that I also like to carry them. It's a waste to me along with a waste of space for me to just put it on my shelf and have it sit there.

IF I do buy another knife, one almost always gets flipped or given away to someone that will use it. I have two. the HTM Gunny and that fixed blade. The HTM will get bumped once my custom version gets finished because I won't find a need for it.

The HTM replaced a ZT 0350 (my first knife). I've had the HTM for 2 years or so. The fixed blade replaced a custom whose maker I forget right now, but that Thrill (from these forums) now owns. EDIT: Bill Coye Ridgeback.

Sarge knives lock back

21$, nice wood handle (have to treat it your self, i used a wax), with a slightly hollow ground thin 440C blade.

Came kinda dull, but after an hour of reprofiling it cuts like a dream, edge holds really well.

I used to sell those. The company is out of Greer,SC they look knife and get the job done. Obviously not the best but they do have a nice appeal to them for their price

I have mostly only cheap knives , okapi , opinel , svord .. all under $20 but all good knives , I wouldnt call them junk

on the other hand , I bought a RAT1 .. it cost me a bit more than $20 yet the handle fairly chews up my hand when I was using it hard , and the edge holding ability of its blade when compared to my Opinel or Svord was kinda not there ... but it opens with a nice snap , and it looks sexy ... for some reason my kids think it is a waaay more serious knife than any of my work knives

sooo I guess its my favorite junk knife :)

It's worked better for me than my case mini copperlock. Id have to strop or touch up that knife every day. I can go weeks with out stropping this with regular use (bags, threads, meats and cheese, fruits, ect. light use) and it'll still pop a hair.

that being said i'd take a fullsize cv copperlock over this any day, but those are hard to come by.

walmart branded winchester small lockback knives. no blade wiggle, easy to sharpen, locks up very well.

use them around the house opening mail and packages around the house and use in the kitchen to open up stuff.

not so bad.

The cheapest knife I have is 325 dollars.

If you wouldn't mind ... and I swear I'm not trolling ... why don't you buy any less expensive knives? I'm not talking sub $50 things by any means. But aren't there some production knives in the $100-300 range that might please you?

I get the appeal of custom knives and high end knives. I'm just not certain I've encountered anybody whose cheapest knife was still more valuable than what I consider to be some very fine production knives. I hope I worded this inquiry without offense, as none is intended.

A first version Cold Steel voyager clip point with clip molded handle. $7 from a pawnshop. It's been used hard and still has a lot of life left.

No offense taken. I get where you're coming from and where many people are coming from. There are knives that hold my interest in that price range, but not enough for me to consider buying. The 275 Adamas is interesting. The 710d2 I've considered for a long time, but it would do everything my HTM does, so no real point there. I almost bought a Manix 2 sprint run (the first one with the FFG and s90v I think), but couldn't find any in stock back then. I've since lost interest in obtaining that knife though I see them pop up in the exchange from time to time. Almost bought a Microtech OTF at some point til I came to my senses and realized how not practical that would have been so I skipped on that. So in short, not really, not in the present time anyway. I'm a simple man, yet difficult at the same time if that makes sense.

Also, I wouldn't consider my knives that high end. They are midrange IMO. There are tons of people here with many knives costing way more than mine. I can say that fixed blade is a true custom though; I designed it. There's some really nice stuff Coop posts that I love looking at but would never own either because at that point, the knives are "too nice" to use.

There is one production knife I would buy in a heartbeat if it ever gets produced. The Jani-song by Michael Janich. A few were made years ago, but production never started past the 50 or so that are in people's hands. He's now with Spyderco so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. It's his take on the bali-song. What really appeals to me about bali-songs is how strong the inherent (locking) mechanism is. The Jani-song is designed in a way that no matter how you manipulate the knife, you will not get cut. Every year that I'm at Blade, I ask Sal or Michael if I catch him if that knife will see the light of day. I always get something along the lines of "They want to, but cannot promise anything." Sal REALLY wants to get it to the market but there are some ergonomic issues he wants to take care of before that happens.

Not all of us are collectors.

My post did not imply that everyone was a collector nor did it ask what was the cheapest you owned. Nice knife, but perhaps you missed the point of what a "cheapo" was. The point of the thread was for everyone to show which low end knife fits their guilty pleasure. Not a lot of us speak highly of Taylor, but yet many of us have one or two.

My cheapest knife, other than Vics (which I love and own a lot of) or multi-tools (I was gifted a couple cheapees), is a Byrd Finch and a Byrd Cara Cara Rescue. I like them both fine for what they are. I'm not afraid to use them hard. The 8Cr13Mov steel is fairly nice. Great? No. But good users.

Thanks. I'm still at the stage where I'm drooling over sub $200 production knives from ZT, Spyderco, Benchmade and others. So while I have some trouble relating, I understand your explanation. And that's a nice custom fixed blade you had posted above.

Well, it isn't junk, but it did cost me only 7,50 euros. I've got this EKA Swede 60 for years now and it is a favourite. Very easy to sharpen and easy to clean, since you can disassemble the knife with just a simple screw driver or the SAK in your pocket.

S&W Oasis. It was the beginning of the slippery slope to addiction. I bought it and another S&W from Amazon, thinking "hey, Smith & Wesson must make good knives". The other is consigned to my car. Loose stud, lousy ergonomics, etc. But I still like the look of the Oasis, it locks up tight and the blade gets nice and sharp.

Those were simpler times -- before knife catalogs, Youtube reviews and this very expensive forum.

I'm a sucker for these faux swiss/multi function knives and faux leathermen type. Folks give em away at conventions and/or golf tournaments. They tend to live in my glove box and have opened plenty of bottles and come in handy when I'm in a pinch and need a screwdriver, scissors, or blade. Heaven knows I've recovered many things that have fallen under my seat with that nifty LED torch.

I also spent $5 on ebay for one of those spring assisted things. It's fun to open and quite novel to whip out in front of the guys.

In the kitchen, I have a $7 Forschner chicken boning knife. It's not good for choping or dicing veggies, but its a great utility knife, and Forschner steel ain't bad at all. I sorta think of them as the Mora of the kitchen (inexpensive, but not cheap crap).
