I've been collecting multiple years already, and several brands have fallen out of my favor:
Top 5:
1. Opinel: Best $$$, best historical value, best slicer and beautiful handles. Carbon-steel patina is entertaining to earn. Plus the ring-lock is just so simple and elegant.
2. Spyderco: Consistent quality no matter where it's made. Spyder-Hole is best-invention ever.
3. Canal Street Cutlery: USA!!! USA!!! The Half-Moon model chestnut is amazing.
4. Queen/Schatt & Morgan: USA!!! USA!!!
5. Lionsteel: Makes the best hard-use and beautifully machined knives ever.
Buck and Boker have fallen out because of questionable lines coming out of China. Still own a classic Buck 110 in CPM-S30V and the original 112.
Case has fallen out because the last three I picked up have questionable F&F. It's not worth getting unless you like the CV novelty. I only keep a classic trapper in CV.
Zero Tolerance, Cold Steel and Strider have gotten too "tactical" and "bulky" for everything except eye candy. A knife is supposed to slice. If I wanted something bulky, I would have a hammer and crowbar. I own none of my originals. :barf:
Benchmade is too expensive for what it offers. Since Spyderco has put the Ball-Bearing lock into some Golden models, I no longer get Benchmades for the Axis. Only exception is an old Osborne 2, which I still carry.
CRK Sebenza underwhelmed me when I first handled it. My new Gayle Bradley feels just as smooth, for less than half the price. I sold it and bought two Opinel #13.
