Favorite Mistress

The 2007 Special Edition FBM (a variant of the FBM LE) is marvellous. The weight and balance is just right ... and, if you're brave enough to use it, it's a great knife all around (solid chopper!).

The original SHBM has a unique combination of comfort, balance, and style that makes it "THE" original classic. I'll always have at least one of them.

I'm down with what OP said.

Will -- batoning the BIG stuff. I've stopped chopping large diameter logs in favor of using a saw to section them out. I still chop the medium and smaller stuff. But I love batoning. And while it is definitely possible to baton logs larger than your blade, it's simply braggard to split the larger stuff straight across. :D

Doby -- BWLE

I can't believe that more people aren't going ooh and aah over this thing. Perfect thickness IMO for effective, but effortless chopping with none of the Busse-pinky. Nice strong tip for prying and batoning. Sooo comfortable.

Combat Grade FBM. Bar none the best bang for the buck. Nice wide blade, has the fusion handles, and it's light enough to pack around with.

Best Chopper....NMFBM LE

And if I could get one for the original price....the one I would love to have the most, is a SHBM. I just have a hard time using the crap out of something that typically starts at a thousand dollars.

So yeah....all around, the CGFBM.

Count me in fellas, I LOVE my BWMLE:thumbup::thumbup:.

As nice as having an SHBM would be I wouldn't want it unless it was new made. I can't see using a $1000 knife that is only covered by the ORIGINAL sell price:thumbdn: Obviously this is not a knock to Busse, as they would be foolish to cover anything but the shop cost.

Absolutely agree. And there are some other things besides chopping and batonning I like the BM's for, above all others, including prying, bashing and general intrusion/extraction functions.

I can't think of a better knife than a BM to have in a vehicle if you're in an accident and have to extract yourself or others, or if you come upon an accident where that's the case, or if there's a downed tree across a road that has to be dismantled, or if you're in a burning building scenario where you have to get out/get in/get to someone or to property at risk. Breaking windows, chopping/prying through doors or walls or roofs--all of that stuff, to me, is what the BM is made for. Taking down trees at your leisure is fun, but after all, is typically best left to chainsaws.

That said, and in all of these scenarios, to me the biggest/thickest of the BM's are the best because they do make good choppers and are the most indestructible "sharpened prybars".

For these reasons, and because of the NMFBM's proven superiority in the chopping department, I would have to say it's my favorite. The FFBM would be a close second in this regard, for its lateral strength and rigidity.

I have only used the FFBM and CGFBM as far as mistresses go. Of the two I prefer the FFBM. I love the extra weight and how it smashes matter into a pulp. But honestly I'd be more than happy with any of them. The NMFBM is definitely on my "must try" list though.

my only one, which I'm more than satisfied with - a CG BWM. it's headed to NorCalBlacktail for some finish and edge work, and to get double-thick liners put in to beef up the grip - but those are just user preferences. I (make myself) use it for pretty much everything, from food prep to fire work, anything really. I think it works well (enough) in everything I've thrown at it. thick enough, thin enough, light enough, heavy enough, etc.

The MO in MOFBM is Military Overrun
I dont know all the differences between it and
a standard CG FBM,but the spine is polished and it
has tiger scales.
(my particular knife has really great looking scales, very close to snakeskin!)
Its just a really really nice looking knife.

all those other people with their choices for the best lookin BM
thats ok but they are all wrong. :D

I don't own this one ... not even sure if it exists ... but I would say my favourite would be an asymetrical ground SHBM with slotted bolts to enable the grip to be removed and ideally with a clip point ... were they done like that?

Anyone got a pic of an asymetrical grind SHBM??

I might go with that Desert Sand FBM in your pic. Perfect thickness, saber cut, great handle....love mine.

I've been splitting some bigger logs with an axe and then reducing them to really small pieces for our outdoor fire bowl. The NM FBM LE really excels here. It's a batoning mo-sheen.

Good comparison pic. Thanks.

I haven't gotten a BWM yet. Still on the fence. It's so close to the Rat Mastiff and the Rat Daddy in many ways, and I already have a SHBM as well. I might be pressured into action by the closing bell, but I'm already pretty well outfitted with Mistresses.

I like my BWM as it is the only mistress I own. I woud love to try the others but my weak credit card won't let me :p

I finally broke down and ordered a BWM (I have some tax return money coming to me). I can't wait for it. As far as my favorite...I sold it :(. I was hard up for cash a year back and I wound up selling my NMFBM. I really regret doing that as I loved that blade, and having originally bought one from the factory makes it really hard for me to pay the second hand prices that are out there for them right now. Oh well...someday I will again own one. I also had a FFBM which I sold, but I don't really regret it as I liked the NMFBM much better.
