A thought just hit me while reading through all of these forums, everyone has and collects tons of fixed blades. Now, I'm not too big a fan on fixed blades, mainly because I rarely use mine. I prefer knives that I can carry freely, such as folders.

I like the benchmade griptilians, Benchmade Rukus, and the SOG Vulcan. It is usually a flip between these three knives when I go in the great outdoors.

So which folders do you guys prefer when going on an outing, such as a camping trip?

My Spyderco Delica and/or Dragonfly goes with me everywhere, weather it be city or woods. So does my Victorinox Swiss Tool if you want to include multi-tools with folders. I just got an Opinel number 7 and it's taken a couple of walks in the woods with me but not seen much real action yet. I carry and use folders every day but I don't have any that I think of as being primarily a woods knife. They do tend to get neglected a bit when I'm in the woods with a fixed blade handy on my belt.

I think that Swiss Army Knives are very popular among our fellow forumites. I remember when I first joined bladeforums the One Hand Trekker was getting talked about a lot. I still need to pick one of those up.

My Spyderco Manix goes with me everywhere, even in some urban settings where it shouldn't be due to the Republic of California's ridiculous laws. We bonded over an incident with a pack of feral dogs about 8 months ago and its been my bestest budro ever since.

My EDC for work is a Spyderco Native, but the folder I love the most and carry off duty and / or to the woods is my Camillus Heat. But when I go to the woods, I generally have a fixed and a folder.

In order of most used:

Klein Lock-back 44036 (3" [2-3/8" blade] copy of the Buck 110)
Schrade 34OT
Spyderco Centofante 3
BM Mini Griptillian
Gerber LST Magnum Jr.
SAK Soldier
Camillus 886 lock-back

The Klein is an outstanding knife. Fit and finish is near perfect, takes a very sharp edge easily, and carries well in the pocket. I've spent 3X as much on other folders but this one keeps finding its way into my pocket. I've had it for probably 10 years and it has yet to disappoint.

Not to switch my own thread over, just a quick question about your spyderco knives. I have the H1 pacific salt and the Endura 4. Both have the spyder edge and are pretty much the same knife looks wise, but one is a "real" stain-free knife, and the other is made from VG-10.

Now, do you guys like spyderco knives in plain edge or with the spyder edge?

And, does it help THAT much more to have the spyder edge?

I've been carrying this Grohman for short woods outings that don't require any clearing. Great for skinning as well. Cheers

I usually go with plain edge due to ease of sharpening. I was putting some tarp down in my back yard and had to cut it. Serrations would have been a pain, but plain edge worked great. Serrations cut things like rope and seat belts great, even after they have started to dull. They tend to tear more than they do cut. I try to keep most of my carry knives sharp enough that I dont need to worry about needing serrations. I have had a plain edge paramilitary for about 2 months now, been carrying it most of the time and still have not needed to sharpen it. Hope that helps.

I always have a SAK and a fixed blade. Then I rotate folders for fun. If it's a real multi-day hike, the folder gets left behind.

Leatherman Wave, but I'm thinking of getting a SOG folder, Trident maybe.

Not trying to ruin your sight on the trident, but for the money you might want to get a griptilian, or if you are wanting to buy only a SOG, I would recommend the Vulcan. Great knife for the money, and thick for a folder.

Ritter, Manix, CS Voyager, Buck 112

How does your voyager hold out? I've seen them at the store, but I have hesitated on buying one because I don't know much about them. I would want the 4" partially serrated one or the plain edge.

Buck Strider...this is NOT my style..but after handling it for the first time over a year ago...I havn't been without it...its my EDC and it is easily the toughest pocket knife I have ever owned ...(I don't really have to much experience with folders actually) and it works everytime.

I currently carry a SAK of one model or another as a supplement to a fixed-blade. If it was stand-alone, I'd join The Chief in carrying a Manix.
