Favorite Patterns

Three patterns come to mind as favorites; Sportsman, Lockback and Jacks. Here's two out of three...

For me it would be simpler to say which patterns I don't like....not many :D

Lot is to do with mood from one day to another in terms of size, pattern, blades, materials - carrying the same knife nearly all the time makes being on a knife forum redundant. Stockman knives are usually around, single-blades of various shapes and particularly Pen type construction with a blade at each end and preferably single-spring. But who knows what the future may bring ?

I like buck 110s and am carrying my example right now. But stockmans see the most use for me. The selection of blades offers options throughout my cutting tasks.

Not to mention, it looks like a knife ought to, especially with square bolsters.

For most of my life from age 5 or so onwards I carried a slipjoint knife habitually without thinking about it, and honestly, I don’t remember most of the early ones any more than I remember what belt or wallet or keychain I had. Certain ones do stand out, however, and some I still have.

The years 1985 to 1993 however (age 19 to 27) were fairly eventful for me, and I have a pretty good recall of the knives I carried and used during that period because they are associated with major life events. I still have my main carry of the the time, a Case Mako lockback I got in 1988.

Nostalgia for those days prompted me to reacquire an Opinel #8 carbon and an Okapi 907E ratchet knife in 2016 or so, and that sparked an interest in other large single-blade European style folding knives, and that is how my tastes run these days:

So much a matter of personal preference - I hardly ever carry a stockman with square bolsters, because round bolstered stockman knives just look so much smoother and seem so much more "pocket friendly" to me!

Glad there are enough variations for everyone! Ya know there was a time I wouldn’t even own a round bolstered stockman. But I’ve broadened my horizons. I’m certainly not like that now, though I still prefer the square over the round. I’ve even considered getting a 47 pattern to keep the 75 company.

Now I like to take a knife I don’t particularly care for, and force myself to carry it a week or two, to get a proper feel for it before I pass my judgment.

The Barlow has always been my favorite pattern; something about it speaks to me. But I have yet to find a quality example with a bolster stamp, wood or synthetic covers, no shield, and a single stainless steel blade at a price I'm willing to pay. This Rough Rider Barlow is the closest I've ever come, and it's a lovely little knife.

A very close second is single-bladed equal-end/cigar pattern knives. I don't actually know what this pattern is called, but my favorite example of it is the Schatt & Morgan #99 Scout you gifted me with, Jakeywax31 Jakeywax31 ! :) This is such a pleasing pattern in hand and pocket.

In third is the equal-end/cigar Stockman (the bottom knife in the old photo below). Delightfully pocketable just like a single-bladed cigar pattern, but with a useful secondary blade (Sheepsfoot is my preference) and a small tertiary blade I can reserve for delicate tasks -- and sunk, or very nearly sunk, joints. My quest to replace this knife with one that has wood or synthetic covers, in stainless, is also ongoing. This is the unloved stepchild of Stockman patterns at Case, and the few examples I've seen that meet my fussy preferences aren't terribly attractive. ;)

I also have a fondness for the Peanut pattern. I don't usually love small knives, but this blade combination, form factor, and size makes for a wonderful -- and useful -- little package. This dinged, scuffed, and well-loved example is also one of my favorite knives.

I like the peanut myself. How I manage to use one I don’t know. But the small stockman is just too small. I guess the fatness of the peanut is what does it. They come with rounded and square edges, I prefer the square one I think.

As mentioned above, my favorite is the Barlow.

Closely following are the single-blade Tear Drop, Pocket Hunters, Tribal Locks and medium Stockmans.

And then medium Jacks and large Pens.

Might do a favorites photo to post in the next day or three.

Well, reply to my post and you can see the image even though it ain't displaying in the thread, that I can see anyways.

That is a nice batch. I’ve been wanting to try the tribal lock, but ain’t had the chance yet.

Thanks.

I like the Tribal Locks. Good fit for my hand. Large-ish but not huge. Big fan of the blade shape. I think I got lucky on the bone on that one, seems a lot of other people had more light orange in the coloration.
