When carrying big pocketfuls of EDC gear---things like money clips, fire starting kit, other knives, a SureFire, etc.---I'll carry a Hiker to be weight-conscience. If I have less of a load, or am carrying a bag, a Farmer or Pioneer Harvester---essentially the same as the Farmer, with the addition of a small hawkbill-style blade---will be my companion.
All are excellent in the field and around the house.
Well I only have one SAK, Victorinox, Mechanic 2 blades, saw, pliers, file, scissors, can openers, bunch of things on the back side, tweezers and a plastic toothpick. I have been wanting a one hand trekker. Pat
K Williams, I think so. I've seen photos here of Trekkers where people have done that. At least the serrations are on the front half which is better, I think, for woodworking with the back half of the blade.
seen plenty of trekkers with the serrations ground off. although for me i dont really mind having them.. rather then having the serrations on the back part of the its at the front. so i can still do wood work with relative ease but also have the serrations for making quick work of rope.
If you want a saw but you can live without scissors then Farmer or OH Trekker.
if you need saw and scissors then Huntsman or Outrider.
If you need saw/scissors/file/pliers then Swisschamp.
I know the pliers are small on the Swisschamp but bearing that in mind i still like 'em.
Think of them as super-duper strong oversized precision tweezers!
lol.
(I have actually used them a tweezers to pull out splinters)
And unless you are riding a vehicle out in the woods the SAK pliers should mostly suffice.
And if you are on a vehicle then you should have at least a minimal separate tool kit carried on the vehicle for mechanical problems.
im gonna have to say my farmer because it is the only one i have. though i think id prefer the Pioneer harvester because it has an additional blade instead of the bottle? opener. dont need one of them in the wilderness.
I only have one at this time. It is an Alox Electrician Plus. It is the same as a Farmer, but it has a sheeps foot blade w/small recurved section instead of the can opener (good for cutting string and twine). Oh, and it doesn't have the key ring/attachment point either.
I wish they would make an alox model the size of the Farmer, but replace the can opener and bottle openers with spey and sheepsfoot blades. Leave the awl and saw. Kind of like a super duper stockmans knife ~ I think that it would be ideal for most woods use.
