Favorite SAK for Wilderness Use?

outrider for the last several years.

The outrider is now going into the 'ultralight' gear, as I find that in my normal trips I always have a fixed blade and a saw on my to begin with, so I'm trying out the climber while I wait for a scibeer original yeoman pattern. (results, after 5 days, corkscrew used thrice, can opener once, bottle opener 4 times. Scissors daily (I don't even bother to track), flat head screwdriver 11 times, awl twice. Large blade once. Tweezers once. Stick pin (not included on the climber, but the scales can mount it) I used once. The saw I didn't miss, and the phillips screwdriver I DID MISS to the tune of 14 times. (the yeoman will have a phillips)

I may rethink the saw in the future. I simply don't need it unless I'm going out,, but I'm not sure I want to carry the corona folding saw on light daytrips. Since I'l already have the climber/yeoman/whatever in my core gear, the outrider might be silly from a weight standpoint. maybe I'll find a two layer with saw, or have a 111mm built with just the saw, can and bottle openers, and awl.

If you want a saw but you can live without scissors then Farmer or OH Trekker.
if you need saw and scissors then Huntsman or Outrider.
If you need saw/scissors/file/pliers then Swisschamp.
I know the pliers are small on the Swisschamp but bearing that in mind i still like 'em.
Think of them as super-duper strong oversized precision tweezers!
lol.
(I have actually used them a tweezers to pull out splinters)

And unless you are riding a vehicle out in the woods the SAK pliers should mostly suffice.
And if you are on a vehicle then you should have at least a minimal separate tool kit carried on the vehicle for mechanical problems.

One of the reasons I mounted my swisschamp on my Maxped 10x4 bottle carrier was for the pliers. I use them to remove my GSI nesting cup from the fire because I removed the folding handles (they drove me crazy and still got hot when the cup was placed on anything other than glowing embers).

That being said - the Farmer is my edc and always goes into the woods with me. I've become so accustomed to using it for my day to day that it is the first thing I reach for when I'm "outdoors". Of course, I ALWAYS have my SRKW HRLM with me for those larger tasks.

Sportsmans guide has (or at least had) something very similar. It is a German Mil-surp with I believe all those features. I want one, but I only want one, so that's the only reason I haven't bought this yet.

Oh, I mean JUST the saw and openers and awl. a 2 layer :)

But the one on the sportsman's guide site is something I'd give a try. Unfortunately, I don't (can't) order through them because they somehow believe that yolo county residents either cannot own knives of any sort or can sue for people mailing knives because a minor could steal the shipment, or some other weird farce.

They do have some weird shipping policies, and their rates are also a little high IMO.

Those are pretty good I used to have a few, both the Victorinox and Mauser ones. There's another version that is very similar but has a little pen blade too. They turn up in surplus shops here for about £5. Often one of the scales is cracked in half but with a bit of skill they can be turned into great presents.

I have the hardest time trying to figure out which SAK to carry on a daily basis. It must have the saw. I have 3 with a saw. I have a Farmer, Huntsman, Rucksack. I also have the Super tinker and the deluxe tinker and Adventurer. I dont EDC them because of no saw. I like my Huntsman but the large blade and awl have blade play. It came new like that. I dont carry the Farmer because It doesnt have scissors and only a large blade. I like the smaller blade for small task also I like having scissors. So I just carry the huntsman with the blade play. I dont know how or were to send it to get fixed. I would say, that for me, the Huntsman feels all of my needs. If you ever try to do the bow and drill thing then youll see how handy that little saw is.

Wow baldtaco-II, that's a great picture!

I add the little screwdriver to my Outrider. It fits into the cork screw and you never know when it's gone come handy

If I already happen to have a Farmer on me, I'll take that. For something a little bigger I'll grab my Rucksak

Same here , but I keep hearing great things about the OHT....looks like it'll be my next SAK :D

Up until yesterday I would have said my One Hand Trekker, but since I just got a farmer in the mail today I'll have to say the Farmer. It's a lot more pocket friendly and doesn't require a homemade pouch like my trekker did :D

I just ordered the OH Trekker. I have an old Trailmaster, a Rucksack, and an OD color Hunter.
