Favorite Tactical Folder

As I only have one folder I would classify as tactical I would have to say my favorite is my Gerber Applegate Mini-Covert. I think tatical would imply an offensive or defensive capable blade and one that is built for the purpose rather than improvised. A sheapsfoot blade will slash but I would not count it as a tactical design. I would consider the trench knife, the Fairbairn Sykes dagger, and CS Tanto as being tactical. I also have a Kershaw Blackout which although capable and coated I would say is more general purpose than tactical.

So here are the ones I have heard about:

CRKT M16 line
ZT 0300 line
Emerson CQC 7 and others from the CQC line
Spyderco

Out of these which would you choose

But do YOU own? Many of us posted knives that we OWN.

CRKT M16 (or the M21, I like them too) is cheap and good IMO. Almost 4 inch long Aus-8a steel and the blade is quite thick (more than 1/8 inch methinks but may be wrong). I use mine to pry sometimes (stupid me) and it is firm. Hate the chisel grind though, the total edge angle is a little small and it's fragile. My edge reprofiled M21 is better (20 deg a side for medium use).

I think he's asking cause he's thinking of getting one. Fair assumption that he has no knives to show right now and that may be why he's asking us. Though it's better for him to say it himself but that's my thinking. (better in future if the thread starter would elaborate more instead of "which is it?")

Cotherion is right on the money. I have no knives to speak of except for a leatherman new wave. I was just asking what you guys had to get ideas for myself. But you have to give me some credit. all I asked was "which is it" and I got a plethora of helpful responses. I got lucky and used the right bait apparently!

chooy721:
DO let us know what you choose, please!!:D Good luck with your hunt!! Oh, and let me warn you NOW, this is an expensive habit!! Do yourself a favor, open your wallet now, and say buh-bye to your money!! ;)

"Favorite Tactical Folder - So which is it?"
chooy721

Given that you don't have as yet, a favorite knife.
Allow me to tell you what you're in for.
Firstly, we're all human and not nearly all that perfect; "favorite" is an awfully ambiguous term for fickle minded wants.
So pardon me for saying that in the end a great majority will fall victim to being fashionable and trendy whist caling out that "favorite" choice.
Logically, if you have been collect knives long enough, there would be a particular reemerging blade pattern which would begin appeal to you subconciously.
And then you may even start to develop this thing call "brand loyalty", meaning you end being hooked on a particular brandname.
The term "tactical knife" means different things to different people.
So why all this confusion?
Because it is a colorful marketing term which denotes such knives as being primarily something paramilitary/military.
And whilst's it's not suppose to be made like some flimsy toy but act more like a heavy-duty tank; and never ever looking "non-tactical (like a SAK..?)" instead appearing totally weapon/tool-like in nature - but eventually ends up being treated like an ordinary EDC knife.
And there you have it.
It's about buying a reputable label and not necessarily the knife of the day.
And whist there have been many good choices posted in this thread, the basic fun in knife collecting is in actually buying; only to discover that there are many far better choices out there all the time.

Peak_Oil has reminded me on my Kershaws. I got a JYD II and a Lahar and they were both cheap and sturdy but why oh why isn't it "my favorite tactical folder"? I couldn't consider my lovely Kershaws as tactical cause they were too darn pretty :) Man the JYD II is like an expensive custom (lock is almost a frame lock!) to me even if I got it for 50 bucks. Both Kershaws have excellent ergos and they (especially my Lahar) cuts like a razor outta the box until today! Chooy721 if you wanna make your bucks last longer Kershaws are a good bet.

Anyone own or have experience with the KErshaw Tanto Groove? As a Kershaw it'll be good I expect and it's the most tactical Kershaw I seen so far.

Oh yeah SOG Pentagon II (designed with a tip made for stabbing) is interesting and the SOG Spec Elite II (designed more for cutting) is pretty tactical. Both blades are 0.16 inches thick so it'll take a beating. Plus the Arc-Lock is quite secure I've heard. Oh yeah, can't go wrong with 5 inch long blades :)

I'm waiting for my Cold Steel XL Ti-Lite Zytel. 6 inch stilleto of good steel. I don't expect it to cut well but for tactical purposes (self defense in my definition) it has an interesting potential.

PS: Once you get bitten by the blade bug you will get poorer fast! My wife recently threatened me with divorce cause I got bought like 5 knives in a month and almost bankrupted us. I pity folks living in 3rd world countries with developed-country level taste in good blades :)

If you want my advice ,get a Spyderco Endura , or a ZT 200 . Both are well made , a good value for money , and have strong utility function . Play with them for a bit , and if need be , refine your taste .

Neither are going to put you in the poor house , both will do the job . Another I would recommend would be the Spyderco military , great ergos , carrys well , great in the kitchen .

Chris

tactical is latin for " what ever you have in your hand at the time", or if you persist; $100.00 more.
