Are you going to collect the chunks of iron ore found on the bottom of the Batsto river and make your own knife ??

That water is so full of iron, you can reach in with a stick in your hand and come out with a fully sharpened Mora!

I should have my Maxped Pygmy Falcon just in time for this so I'll be able to do a pretty good review on it - It'll also be the maiden voyage for the Laconico Project W :)

Magicdot - You commin?

Sharpeye - hows the battle with the social director going? :)

Just a little history FYI

This hike includes Quaker Bridge which is the site where the first bridge was built in 1772 to honor the Quakers that died fording the river on the way to their annual meeting in Tuckerton. Not an overly dangerous section of this slow moving river, but they did it in winter. Why didn't they build their own bridge? I don't know, they just kept fording and dying.

Nope.

Always thought they were crazy.

A buzzillion pine trees on both sides of the river and nobody brought an axe to drop a few so they could cross without getting hypothermia?

They might be "The society of friends" but they are certainly not "The society of intellects"

Nope. I would prefer early 0900ish ? I am open to suggestions though.

Earlier than 9? I'm fine with that. I don't know the terrain and how long that 16 miles will take.

What time do you suggest?

The terrain isn't bad. It is fairly easy walking, just wanted everyone to know the full distance. If it is cold I will wear hunting boots, other than that, I may wear running shoes. The sand does tire out your calves a bit. For those that just want to hike out a few miles then turn and go back, that is fine also. We will not likely see another human being on this hike other than crossing the unpaved road at Quaker bridge at the 6 mile mark. It is in the middle of the Pine Barrens on an established, but relatively untraveled trail.

I would think meeting at 8:00 at Batsto visitor center would be a bit better, but I am fine with whatever the group decides. I know some have to travel a ways to get there.

I'm fine with 8 or even 7 for that matter - It actually works better for me. It looks like the weather, for now, will hold up. I'd like to get going early enough to where we could relax for a bit before the hike back. We'll have to catch up later in the week to figure out where we are going to meet.

It doesn't sound like the hike will be all that strenuous, which will be nice since it's been a while since I've been able to get out and stretch my legs. That being said - is there an easy way to shorten this to maybe ~ 10 miles round trip?

Sgt Art may join us as well - we'll see if anyone else joins in.

7am would be a stretch for me. Any earlier won't work. 10 miles round trip is closer to what I can do comfortably this time of year

Not to derail the thread, but what if BF had a creepy lurker who showed up to your hike and pretended to be a different forum member and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference?

Sorry, bushman5's nighttime pic thread had me thinking :p

I'd like to get a trip like this going for Texas residents. Good luck to you guys, have fun  :)

Does the creepy lurker know how creepy I am?

I think not.

Besides, as long as they don't talk incessantly, they are welcome to tag along regardless of creepiness.

You obviously don't know what a "Piney" is, do you?

LOL!

Sharp Eye
There are several different trail options at Batsto. I took the white trail last month with my family and it was about a 4 mile loop if I am not mistaken. There are longer options and the Batona trail is a 50 miler. It is a down and back scenario from Batsto so you can walk as far as you want and then hike out the same way you came in.

Guys
This is a great place to hunt for fatwood. I took home a couple of big pieces last time I was there and I wasn't even trying.
Bring your bino's the birding is awesome on Batsto lake.

I am trying to go but I have 2 basketball games to go to in the a.m. with my boys so I don't think it is going to happen. I will be there in spirit. I am envious.

The meeting place will be kept secret from the forum and given via email.

I actually think about the same thing.
