Feeler for a CA gathering

Man it would be nice to leave this -20 weather behind and go west. five feet of snow in my back yard, ice everywhere. Good grief, I am sick of it.:barf:

Boomstick,

If that ends up being the destination, I'd probably also take a few extra days to visit friends and hit a few wineries in that area. Maybe even go hog hunting on some of the open land near Hunter Liggett.

Hope you're unable to ('cause you keep the job;)).

Sorry that i started the thread and then left. Had to take care of a customer. As for me im in Los Angeles my self. Center coast would be great or Kings canyon area should do well. So who is up to date on some camp grounds were we can play with toys and not get bothered. I never stay at camp sites so no idea of a good location. Lets keep the ball rolling and figure out when and where.

Does anyone know anything about the Santa Lucia Wilderness Area, inland from San Luis Obispo? There appear to be a couple camping spots there and it would probably be a lot less developed than Montana de Oro State Park.

Here's another possibility: Try Googling Machesna Mountain Wilderness (inland from SLO). There's at least one site where you can camp (Pine Spring or something like that). It also looks like it would be a bit more primitive.

If you don't have your G6 chartered out that weekend, you could send it down for us!:D

I'd be interested. I'm in Upland. I have family in the central valley (Visalia), and in the Sacramento area so I'm ok with a place anywhere in between. Though the farther north the longer a trip it becomes and then getting the time off can be difficult.

I don't really care where as long as it's not too crowded. Coastal places tend to get crowded especially when it gets hotter. We should do it early spring I think. This really sounds like fun.

The Pozo-Lapanza area in the Santa Lucia Wilderness, East of San Luis Obispo, also indicates some undeveloped, primitive camping areas. Maybe Mike or someone else in Central CA has been by there or to Machesna and can comment?

For dates, how about either the weekend of April 18 (after taxes!) or May 1 (before Mother's Day)?

Mike in LA ...

Los Padres NF near Santa Barbara is pretty nice this time of year.
Lots of trails and camp sites.
You can also get very large campsites for like 30 people. If we have that many. :-)

Im looking at maps and checking out camping sites. But you might be right Ray that the coast might be crowded. I done some camping in the kings canyon area where i would find a fire road drive to the end and camp out. Collect your own fire wood and do some fishing for some small trout. I need to find on the map what fire roads i used to take. Actualy im thinking of a spot that is easy to get to large open area. With a creek flowing within a few steps. But i havent been there for 3 years now. Some very big Sequoias and a few bears...

Just curious: Is the Kings Canyon spot outside of the National Park gates?

DancesWithKnives

I think it is outside. The rangers didnt bother me and i choped some fire wood. Which they dont like in the NP areas.

Sasha

Well that sounds promising! If it's on National Forest land, presumably all we would need would be a fire permit.

O.k i found the area i used to camp before. It is right off the M-90 About 1-2 miles past the M-50 it is a nationl forest NOT a NP. I used to drive up the horse meadow creek fire road and just find a spot that is clear. Or about 500 meters before that on the east side of the M-90 there was a fire road that would drop down about 300-400 meters. There was a nice large grassy area with a creek and plenty of room for a 7-10 cars and easy 30 guys. Now if no one minds to park closer then we can fit more cars to the side with a few sites for tents. As for me i got a camper so im easy. As i said before it was about 3 years from my last camp out there. Any one else knows about this area???

I'm in Visalia in the San Joaquin Valley (same as Ray) and I might be able to make it - my vacation time is pretty well spoken for this year. You probably know my preference, given how much I love Sequoia/Kings Canyon.

sasha- i have no idea where that spot is... sounds cool...

i am open to other possibilities... if we hit any of the cosatal spots before the end of may/early june, we should be fine as far as crowds go... both times i have ever camped there, was in april/may... also, depending on the amount of folks, we might have to get a group camp site...

i'll look into some more spots tonight...

the pinnacles national monument is always nice this time of year as well... http://www.nps.gov/pinn/ lots of cool crags and caves to check out..

I'm in Oceanside(San Diego county) and I'd love to see something anywhere from here up to about frisco area, depending of course if I can get away from Uncle Sams Misguided Children for a few days
