Feeler for a CA gathering

How does May 2 look for folks? I can't do April 25 but if that's best for everyone else, go with it.

A CA gathering would be great. Unfortunately, I live in the Northern part of the state. The Bay Area is Southern California to me. Time off from work and travel expenses would most likely prohibit me from attending, but who knows.

I'm good for a time before mid to late May, I will be pretty busy right then. I have not been keeping a headcount of people's locations to see where we are all located, there seems to be a fair amount in the Bay(ish) area, and couple down here in my neck of the woods. We could shoot for the central coast or valley, roughly the same distance for people coming from the North and South, you guys in the middle would luck out on travel time. I know there are great spots near the coast as Mike mentioned, and out near Yosemite there are a lot of really nice camping areas. lambertiana, I noticed from your posts that you are quite familiar with the Sierra's, have you ever been to the Soquel campground below Yosemite Park? My family used to camp there every summer, fantastic place, and they allow pretty large groups on really decent sized areas. Just putting in my two cents.

Does anyone knows of a good place closer to the beach About midway to everyone???
If not, Then maybe in the kings canyon area. I know we got some guys who live close by would anyone of you can think of a spot.
First get togher would take more planning but im sure the second would be much easier.

If you guys want to bring toys (as in firearms) it needs to be in a good NF location. I don't know what is available on the coast, but there are plenty of places in the Sierras around here that have good trees and room to shoot. I have a CCW so I can carry in the parks, but we wouldn't be able to do any shooting.

Lambertiana can you come with a good location sort of midway to everyone. I know you pack in the area often. How about snow up there. I used to camp of the N-90 about 1-2 miles past the N-50 at horse meadow creek road or the was a smaller meadow before the horse meadow on the other side of the road. Any input from someone that lives there would be great. I think we can still use Bows and Arrows..

I live in San Luis Obispo and am fairly familiar with the county. I would be happy to check things out for you.

There is Lake Lopez, San Simeon Campground. Cerro Alto. Santa Margarita Lake, etc

This sounds like an awesome idea but of course I have to ask, are newbs welcome? I live in san bernardino county. I'm up for driving wherever. I have some experience hiking, camping, firearms and I have a few toys but I'm not too familiar with bushcraft and survival.
Thanks,
Kevin

Sasha,

I'd be OK with any dates except April 24, which is a "no go" for me.

Thanks for your work on this!

River we always want the newbs to come and join us.... We need you to wash the dishes and cook for us...
Dont worry about it just come on over and join us.. Its the company and a great way to learn from one another . Which im guilty of planning on doing.
O.k so lets drop the April 24 of the list. Any other dates??
Samuel if you can come with ideas that would be great.. We need help from people that live closer to the area.

MtnfolkMike can't make it on April 18. I don't think he ruled out 5/2.

I'd like to vote for the kings canyon area. It is beautifull and I think, it's a pretty good in between spot, or anywere near Lambertiana, if he has some suggestions, he is also at a good distance it seems.

Anyways, anywhere in the Sierras is my vote. I just love it up there. I don't know that I have anything special going on, so all those dates look fine to me, as long as they are weekend dates.

i could probably do it on the 5-2.. i'll double check with the misses.. she has every other friday off, and that friday is her friday off, so depending on the location, i might be able to take off on thursday...

as far as coastal area's, i still think that the SLO/S.B. coast area is a great central location for most folks... Montana De Orro is a great spot that time of year and the crowds shouldn't be too bad at all....:)

True, and since I mentioned Montana de Oro I don't want to criticize it. However, the national forest location mentioned by Sasha would save us the nightly camping fees and fees for a lot of extra vehicles. Savings on campsite fees might help some people cover the fuel cost more easily.

Just one consideration, of course.

O.k so we drop the Month of April. That would give us some more time to plan the trip. Im also going on what the guys on east coast get togher post. They always chop things and play with sharp toys. If we do that i dont think we want lots of other people around. You just know the cops would show up.
DWK2 and Mike if you two think Montana de oro is a good site then lets consider it. I would like one or two more sites on here to compare. I never done this kind of planning before with a large group. Now you guys might laugh at it. But what people do in large groups like that for a bathroom in the wild??? Its not like we can use the bushes for 2-3 days lol. Just another thing to consider.

Sasha

Montana de Oro is pretty but it's a very thoroughly developed and well patrolled state park. Not a semi-wild place with low ranger supervision. It's a family car camping kind of place. You'd have to bring fire wood and wouldn't be able to do much shelter building with natural materials, etc.

If we went to the place you mentioned near Kings Canyon, I can bring a nice portable toilet. I bought it for an elderly relative, now deceased. It's large, has adjustable legs, padded hand grips on the sides, etc. Just set it behind a bush or a tarp and dig a hole. Move as needed. I may even have two of them for separate men's and women's locations.

This is a great idea. I don't get out even half as often as I would like.

Why limit this to one trip? Let's plan this trip but let's also plan other trips. Cali is a long state so why don't the SoCal folks plan another trip and the NorCal people do the same, with the understanding that everyone is welcome. It's just a matter of convenience and time.

I personally live in the Sacramento area and would be down for as many trips as possible.

Way to get people motivated, Sasha!

DWK & Sahsa--- first of all this is the "peoples republic of CA." and in comparison to the east coast, freedom to do what we want in the woods, is pretty hard to come by, as sad as it may be...:(

i understand completly where you folks are coming from, Montana De Orro is very will developed.. it would be very easy to go out on to some of the trails and practice our skills...

the main reason why i suggest this place, with this being our first get-together and all, is for the easy accessability/location... i am all for going out into the backcountry and chopping/shooting s#@t up.. but with the exception of private, N.F. and BLM land our options are pretty limited....

i'm open to other spots...
