Feeler for a CA gathering

those spots look great... i would like to know, about how long it would take to get there from here...

On the first photo I see a dead standing tree off to the right that is just screaming to me: Please bring the Gransfors Bruks double-bitted felling axe!:D [Of course, I'd have to check on whether you can legally harvest standing deadwood in that area.]

If you have ever driven to Grant Grove in Kings Canyon or Giant Forest in Sequoia, it would be about the same drive, maybe 15 minutes less. You can mapquest those locations to get a general idea.

DWK2 - the forest service usually takes a dim view on cutting standing trees, dead or alive. But there is always wood on the ground....

Love both places Guys what do you say about one of those spots?? lets dicide on the finale one after John comes back from shooting and tell us which is better. I realy like that spot with lots of grass. So i guess we got the spot all set up.. Does the May 2 sound good to everyone as well. If it does then we solved the two hardest parts of the get togher.. We got only 2 names for the gathering. Do we have any other nominations?? I dont know about you guys but i get all excited. I know we cant get it perfect for everyone but i do hope most of you can make it.

lambertiana,

Yes, you normally have to be in a designated wood cutting area (and have the permit) before you can drop even dead stuff. That's one thing I like about Alaska. There are many areas where the population is thin enough that they let you cut what you want.

sasha,

I'm game for May 2 at either of those spots. Thanks for your fine effort on this. Didn't mean to cause you this much work when I initially PM'd you about the subject.

One more possibility: BushBash I.

+1 on those spots, especially the one with more tree cover and the grassy area. May 2 should be ok here, I don't think I have anything outstanding on the books.

DWK2 its not a problem and i dont think it is work. Its more just to get everyone up and do it. Besides i been thinking about and you just gave me the push to do it, So i actualy should thank you lol. BushBash I sound good. John Would post the exact location and direction. The date is set up for MAY-2.
GUYS lets get a list of who is planning to show up. Kids wifes or friends. Let set it up as a yes maybe or no. You can email me at sashaa1@hotmail.com. I would edit the first post with names. Email me your name and handle on this site. Also how many people are comming.

Sasha

Here's a bump to keep it on the first page. We really should get this stickied until we get everyone signed up.

I'll have to talk to my wife tonight to confirm, but I'm pretty sure we'd be up to it. I'll email you later.

it's looking like we're a go too.... that's if the misses and our 2 boys are welcomed as well...:o
the misses was really stoked on it, once she found out where it was going to be... she has been wanting to go out to that area for a while now... she's hardcore and she loves knives...:D

i'll drop you an email a little later on... it's been a long day...

Hi President thanks for the offer but i think for most guys down here it would be a long drive. It would be cool if we could do some BushBash up north and maybe some down south as well. For the first one do come on down to meet everyone.
O.k guys im starting to post the people who show up on the FIRST post.

What I need now is for a consensus on which location is preferred. The one with the big grassy area has more tree cover, but a more complicated drive to get there (more turns and distance on a narrow winding road).

The second location with less tree cover would be easier to find, fewer turns and less distance on narrow winding roads (the last few miles on this one are dirt roads). And if you also want to take a trip up to see the big trees, this one is far better suited for that. If the snow is gone there is direct access to the Redwood Mountain grove from the first one with the grassy area, but I wouldn't count on it.

Once a consensus is reached, that is where I will go shooting two weeks from tomorrow to get precise directions and mileage at the turns.

If any of you are good at firestarting with a bow or flintknapping, I would like to see that.

cool
maybe in fall,
if we plan ahead and get tags we could go for dear and pronghorn, and there's always rabbits.
its 25 acres.
i've got a thousand yard range, and a bunch of steel plates for handgun.
there is water, and it borders a million acres of BLM land.

Sasha-- email sent...

president-- i am totally into that man... i would love to come and check out your property one of these days...

have longbows, will travel...:D

John i think that nice green meadow would be great unless its a bog full of cow pattys. Could be hang something on a tree at each turn to make it easier?? But i would say as someone that been to both places you have the best idea which one it best. Oh yea if you dont mind im going to add your name to a yes list.

Sasha

President just the thought of hunting a deer for a BBQ on an open pit and i think you would have about half of BF showing up for the next one lol.

The only other picture I can find now is this one - my son took a picture of me by the car, from about the same spot as the other picture, looking in the opposite direction. Although the exposure isn't great, you can see a little of the grassy area and the tree cover behind it. I'll see if I can find some other pictures of both spots over the weekend when I get the chance.

so is this spot fairly accessible, for cars without 4WD?? it looks perfect for a group gathering...

Ray-- might you be able to bring some knives for sale... i currently do not own any from you, yet...
