Fenix LD10 Pass Around

Ok, the light is going out friday or saturday. I will miss it.

Thanks again bushcraftbraintrust for the oppurtunity!

I like the looks of the belt pouch, compared to the open top pouch my L1T v.1 came in. My old pouch has loosened with time and barely holds the light.

Wonder if you can buy a replacement pouch like that one? Someday though I want a LD10 anway.

Great reviews to all involved.

The light got here today. My first impressions are that it is well made and very bright for its size. It took a few minutes to get the hang of the various modes, but it is nice to have all of the options.

INITIAL IMPRESSIONS

EDC SUITABILITY The single AA battery means that this light has a very small footprint. In fact, if the LD10 were any smaller, it would probably take away from the light's usability. In the hand, the light is about as big around as a roll of dimes, and would probably work about as well in the fist. The "stand on end" feature necessitates a couple of flanges on the tailcap that feel a bit odd. Maybe it is something I'll get used to. The anti-roll feature works well. One item sorely missing is a pocket clip. I currently EDC a Nitecore Extreme and it rides in my left front pocket opposite my EDC folder. The pocket clip keeps it right where I want it and I don't have to go fishing around in my pocket if I need my light. The light does come with a nice looking black nylon pouch.

BACKPACKING SUITABILITY One of the reasons I was looking forward to trying out this light was to see if it would fit my needs for a backpacking light. For backpacking, I primarily rely on my headlamp. I keep a pocket torch so I can throw light a little farther when something goes "bump" (or "grrrrr!") in the night. On the positive side, LD10 has the advantage of using a single AA battery, is very lightweight, and the optional cone diffuser could cheer up the inside of a tent. The light can also stand on end, which is kind of handy. I'll have to see if the LD10 throws well enough or if I might prefer a more powerful light for that purpose.

I'll edit in some pictures later and post my thoughts after I've used it for a couple of days.

This is a neat little light. It is neither bulky nor puny. It provides lots of light in a usable pattern, throws very well, and the UI is excellent. The diffuser is a really nice feature. With it on, you can walk naturally down a path (or stairway) without bothering to aim the light. Plenty of light is provided for multiple people.

I'm still bugged by the lack of a pocket clip. It baffles me that Fenix wouldn't include one, or even offer one as an option, on a light that is so ideally suited to pocket carry. Maybe I could find someone to tap a couple of holes and install a clip myself.

My only other misgiving about this light is that the "Low" setting is not as low as it could be. As a result, it can screw up your night vision and burn through your battery more quickly than necessary.

The main competition for this light seems to be the Nitcore D10. That light has garnered very positive reviews. I have read that its "Low" setting is very low, sipping the battery over a very long time and preserving night vision. (There is also a pocket clip available!) Although many have touted the D10 as far superior to the LD10, I am still unsure of this new "piston drive" that the Nitecore uses. Does anybody here have one?

TonyM, it is on the way to you today. Enjoy!

Here is the order of the pass around. I will ship to the first person on monday. I will PM or email you just the person you need to ship to next. Please email or PM if you do not have it by monday. Below is a list of rules for a pass around. Please ship with deliver confirmation and insurance for $60. I would appreciate it if you could post here what you think of this light combo after you use it (I love it) . If/when you use the light diffuser tip, can you not use it in turbo mode (I'm not sure, but that might get the LED too hot). I only use the diffuser in the lowest 2 settings and have had plenty of light to read by or camp chores. I'm looking forward to doing more pass arounds in the future as I find cool gear.

Thanks,
BushcraftBrainTrust

I have one and it's my all-time favorite flashlight (so far). They tout the piston drive contact setup as a big advancement, and I have no reason to believe it's not. It's hard to imagine a more reliable design. Time will tell....

I read that some of the first ones shipped had too heavy of a lube on the piston assembly and it caused some difficulties. This was easily remedied by cleaning off the lube. Mine worked perfectly out of the box and had no such issues.

The light's incredible range of brightness and easy operation make it a big winner for me.

I don't yet have a Fenix but one is on the way as I type... an LOD-CE Q4 AAA light. I'm very anxious to get it. Fenix seems to have a rock-solid reputation and expect I'm going to be very happy with the little light.

This is great stuff! I've not yet dipped my toe into the higher-end flashlight world, but this one looks great.

I have a 2xAA Maglight with the replacement LED kit. Does anyone have a set-up like this that they could compare to thr Fenix? I'm curious to see the difference.

Which kit do you have? I have a cheap LED kit I picked up at a Dick's Sporting Goods store in my Mini-Maglite. I'm thinking it was "Nite Ize" brand? I think it had a racoon on the packaging?

It has three old-school LED bulbs in the head. It throws a very broad flood beam that is handy and about equal in brightness (and much bluer in color) to my NiteCore PD10 (single AA cell) at half power or so. It has a WAY wider beam, which is very nice for some uses. It can't be adjusted for brightness/run time like the NiteCore or Fenix, nor is it as bright as those lights at their higher settings.

On the other hand, you're looking at spending $50-$60 for the newer, hi-tech lights. If you use a flashlight a lot, I think there is no question that they're worth it.

I recieved the light today. I'll see if I can get something up tomorrow !

I never used a higher end flashlight before, and after carrying this thing the last few days I think I need to own one. I am amazed at the light it outputs for its size and with just 1 AA battery!

I have compared it to my Mini Mag and Petzyl Tikka plus.

The below comparison was at 15 foot distance outside with no moonlight. All lights had brand new Energizer batteries in them to be fair.

There was really no competion.

Here is the mini mag with fully focused beam. With out it fully focused it didn’t show up on camera.

Here is the Petzyl on high

Here is the Fenix on low

I like the accessories the light came with as well. The diffuser works great and the lil holster holds the light secure! It also has a handy lanyard that comes with it. The light was simple to use, and all settings are easily accessed with one hand.

I wouldn't mind the light to be a lil bigger. That is about the only issue I had with the light, and that’s just a personal preference.

Thank you Bushcraftbraintrust fot the opportunity to play:thumbup:

Please send me myrights addy, and I will have it off to him ASAP.

Oh by the way, whats with the lil spycapsuls in the box?

They do make a 2 AA battery version. I bought one for my brother, for Christmas, to use at work. He told me at least one of the guys he works with has switched from a Surefire G2 LED to the Fenix LD20. My brother also said, he needs to keep an eye on his light because people are always borrowing it.

Just a little "pay it forward" fun for ya! Have fun. Thanks for the comparison.
